CBI probe into Chautala affairs to cover allies, says Surjewala
Chandigarh, December 18 The Tribune had reported yesterday that the Hooda Government had asked the CBI to inquire into the charge-sheet after the State Vigilance Bureau did the job for several months. Mr Surjewala said the CBI would also conduct investigations into the conduct of the close associates of the Chautalas. Widening the scope of the CBI investigation, Mr Surjewala said the agency would also probe who were the NDA leaders who were beneficiaries of the corrupt acts of the Chautalas and who helped them in their nefarious activities. He made a “personal” appeal to the Prime Minister as well as the Union Minister for Personnel to ask the CBI to take up the investigations in a time-bound manner at the earliest. He said the state government was hopeful that it would get the consent of the agency within a week. He said the CBI was already investigating a portion of the issues mentioned in the chargesheet with regard to the recruitment of JBT teachers and others under the directions of the Supreme Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Mr Surjewala said since the “principal accused” in the recruitment scandal, Dr K C Bangar, former Chairman of the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC), had “absconded from the country the Centre should accept the state’s request for a CBI probe and confiscate the passports of Chautala and his sons “so that they do not escape from the country”. He said the chargesheet had been prepared by a committee of senior state Congress leaders headed by the former HPCC President, Mr Shamsher Singh Surjewala, and its members included Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Mr Birender Singh, Mr Bhajan Lal, Mr Phool Chand Mullana, besides Mr Mohan Jain, a former Advocate-General of Haryana. He said the allegations against Mr Chautla and his sons included collection of money for change of land use, illegal mining, allocation of liquor contracts through manipulations in auctions, forcible extortion from industries, reduction or exemption from local area development tax (LADT) to selective industries for extraneous considerations, grant of CLU and No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for installation of petrol pumps and purchase of food grains and sugarcanes from other states. |
Five held for looting foodgrain from trains
Karnal, December 18 According to Railway sources, the train was carrying foodgrains from Muktsar in Punjab to Ankola in Maharashtra. It was stopped at Taroari railway station in Karnal district on Tuesday for giving pass to another train. When the train halted at Taroari Railway station, four robbers entered its wagons and hid there, the sources said. When the train re-started the robbers started pushing foodgrain sacks down near the railway track. Meanwhile driver of the train Bishamber Singh of Tuglakabad headquarter, sensed something wrong and looked behind. He noticed a person pushing sacks on the Railway track from the fourth wagon, the sources added. The driver increased speed of the train so that the robbers could not alight from the train. However three robbers alighted from the train while the fourth could not do so due to increased speed. Following this, the driver informed the Taroari Station Master (SM) through a walkie-talkie about the matter. The SM informed the Delhi control room of Northern Railway which alerted the RPF. Guard of the train, Satbir Singh of Ghaziabad headquarter, was also keeping an eye on the robber on the running train. It was decided to stop the train at Karnal Railway station to nab the robber. The RPF and the GRP men were there to catch him. Instead of stopping the train with routine brakes, driver Bishamber Singh used emergency brake at Karnal Railway station to stop the train so that the robber could not alight from the train. As the train stopped at Karnal Railway station, RPF men nabbed the robber who later was identified as Vinod of Dodwan village near Taroari Railway station. The RPF recovered 37 foodgrain sacks thrown by the robbers near the track between Karnal and Taroari Railway stations. RPF inspector NK Dubey interrogated accused Vinod during his three-day remand following which other three Rajesh, Balkar and Gaurav of the same Dodwan village were also arrested. Sources said Vinod revealed that they used to sell the looted foodgrain to Vasudev, owner of a flour mill at Taroari. The RPF also nabbed him and recovered two sacks of looted foodgrain belonging to the Food Corporation of India, Punjab from his possession. All five robbers have been remanded in judicial custody. |

Women should fight exploitation, say activists
Fatehabad, December 18 Today was the second day of the three-day convention. Participating in the discussion, Ms Ranjana Narula, a member of the central committee of the Council of Indian Trade Unions
(CITU), regretted that the government had not taken effective steps to stop sexual exploitation of women at workplace despite orders of the Supreme Court in this regard. She said the women should unitedly fight against domestic violence and sexual exploitation in offices. She added that the trade unions could play a vital role in this respect and lambasted the economic policies of the government which were projecting women as commodities. Ms Jasbir Kaur, a Sarva Karamchari Sangh leader, said women played a greater role than their male counterparts in the development of the society. But despite the fact, the successive governments and the society itself had been ignoring women. She said women were considered a liability and were being killed in the uterus and rued that the male-female ratio aptly described the plight of women in the society. Ms A. R. Sandhu, cashier of the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Federation of India, said anganwadi workers had been playing a vital role in the society. She said these workers performed duties like care of infants, pregnant and lactating mothers and providing education to children but they were being treated shabbily by the government. She said the government was not ready to consider these workers as its employees and even minimum wages were denied to them. Ms Sandhu demanded the status of government departments for the child development projects and status of class-four employees to anganwadi workers. Ms Jagmati Sangwan, general-Secretary of the Haryana unit of the All India Democratic Women’s Association
(AIDWA), said the issue of social exploitation was as important for women as the economic issues. She said female foeticide, domestic violence and sexual exploitation at workplace were some of the issues, which were of prime importance for women. She said that the diktats of the self-styled ‘khap’ panchayats had always been anti-women. Ms Sangwan said it was really laudable that women had excelled in all fields despite the odds being against them. She stressed that the Sarva Karamchari Sangh should come forward and fight for the issues of social development in the interests of women like the construction of creches and separate toilets for women at their workplaces. Sangh leaders Ms Sunita Devi, Ms Asha Sharma, Ms Nirmal
Balhara, Ms Ratnesh Kumari, Ms Kalawanti, Ms Nirmala Devi and Ms Ruchi also expressed their views. |
Lawyers to suspend work
Panipat, December 18 Talking to The Tribune, the chairman of the committee and president of the Panipat Bar Association, Mr Ved Pal Kadyan, said that the advocates’ body opposed the move. Terming the proposal to shift the family courts from the district level to the division as anti-public, he said the step would lead to delay in settling the cases. According to an estimate, added Mr Kadyan, about 35 per cent of the total cases pertained to matrimonial disputes and the proposal would hinder the work seriously. Lamenting the Hooda Government on the issue, he said when the thinkers and legal luminaries were advocating justice at the doorsteps and the speedy disposal of cases, the government was trying to take away the family courts from the commoners reach. The coordination committee would meet on December 24 to chalk out its further action, Mr Kadyan added. |
