1 caught with Rs 50,000 in police chase
Ludhiana, December 24
Commuters on the GT road near Vishvakarma Chowk were witness to a hot chase between cops and robbers seen usually in movies. But unlike movies, the cops proved victorious as some passersby also helped the cops to catch the accused. The alleged snatchers arrested by the Division No. 2 police in Ludhiana on Saturday.

Gang killing protected animals busted; one held
Ludhiana, December 24
Activists of the People For Animals organisation have helped the Haibowal police bust a gang which hunted protected animals with the help of hounds. The police has arrested one member of the gang.

Various worker, farmer and employee associations will participate in a rally against “increasing unemployment, closure of industrial units and anti-people policies of the government” to be held here tomorrow.

Jail term for bounced cheque
Ludhiana, December 24
Mr Jaspal Verma, Judicial Magistrate, has sentenced Amar Singh, owner of M/s Lall Fasteners (India), Industrial Area-B to one year’s imprisonment in a cheque bounce case. The accused was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 5000.

NRIs’ plea to govt on welfare society

Even while welcoming the government’s move to establish an independent directorate for NRIs, a group of Non-Resident Punjabis has accused the revenue authorities of exploiting their helplessness. MCPI (U) flays India’s stand at WTO meet

Mr Jagjit Singh Lyallpuri, general secretary, MCPI, and Mr Kuldip Singh, secretary of the state committee of MCPI (U), in a joint press statement today condemned the stand taken by Mr Kamal Nath, Commerce Minister, at the recently held WTO conference in Hong Kong.

Consumer Protection Council

The Governor of Punjab has constituted Consumer Protection Councils all over the state. The Deputy Commissioner will be the chairman of the council. Eight members have been nominated in the council here.

VAT creating problems for trade, industry
Ludhiana, December 24
The Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry yesterday said that non-refund of VAT was creating problems for industry in the state. The pending amount under VAT could be well above Rs 350 crore, said Mr P.D. Sharma, president of the chamber.

PAU looks forward to fruitful year: VC
Ludhiana, December 24
Punjab Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor K.S. Aulakh yesterday said that the university was looking ahead to an eventful year ahead with priorities focussing on modern-day needs on agricultural and economy. He said here today that PAU was continuing with the research to break technological barriers in agricultural sector which would transcend the limitations of time and space.

Sacred Heart School celebrates annual function

Sacred Heart Convent School, Samrala, celebrated its annual function to mark the auspicious occasion of Christmas here yesterday with full vigour and zeal, which though filled with glamour and entertainment it was also enriched with culture, tradition and heritage. The chief guest S.D.M. Samrala, Sardar Baldev Singh (P.C.S.) along with the guest of honour Sardar Amrik Singh Dhillon, M.L.A. Samrala, and other distinguished guests were also present at the function.

MTS college holds NSS camp
Ludhiana, December 24
A 10-day NSS camp ‘Youth for Swastha’ by the volunteers of the Master Tara Singh College for Women was inaugurated at Noormahal village here today. The villagers would be told to maintain hygiene, eat nutritious food and will be given handicraft training. Besides, the NSS volunteers will be given civil defense training, traffic training, first-aid training etc.

Tiny tots of Guru Nanak International Pub G.N.I.P. School celebrated Christmas here today. The pre-primary wing of G.N.I.P.S. was tastefully decorated for the Christmas celebrations. Kids came dressed up as ‘Santa Claus’ and ‘fairies’. A big Christmas tree was decorated with stars, buntings and balloons.

Baraichal school organises function
Amloh, December 24
Government High School, Baraichal organised a function on the school campus to honour students who had brought laurels for the school in the field of scouting and girl guide, science exhibition and sports etc. Head master Sukhdev Singh Mander congratulated the staff and students for their hard work. DIG launches health scheme for Khanna cops

Health Scheme for police personnel of the district under the slogan Binsse Rog Bhae Kalyan and health for all was launched by DIG, Ludhiana range, Mr Parag Jain, at Satkar Palace, on Thursday said S.S.P. Khanna Naunihal Singh during a press conference organised at his office here to day. SSP said the scheme was launched in-association with the doctors of the area.

Damandeep Singh of Amritsar has been named captain of the Punjab men’s team for the 56th Senior National Basketball Championship to be held from December 28 to January 4, 2006 at Pune, according to Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill, ADGP, Punjab and president, Punjab Basketball Association.

Easy win for Khalsa College eves
Ludhiana, December 24
Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, scored an emphatic 6-0 win over Government Senior Secondary School, Bharat Nagar Chowk, on the second day of the three-day Ranjodh Kaur Grewal Memorial Ludhiana District Women’s Hockey Tournament being played at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. Sapandeep struck twice while Smita, Shweta, Manpreet Kaur and Chandni contributed one goal each and completed the rout.

A.S. school meet ends

The 34th athletic meet of A.S. Modern Sr Secondary School, here, was concluded at the Principal Naresh Chandar Sports Stadium at Malerkotla Road, here on Friday. Hardip Singh and Amanpreet Kaur were adjudged the best athletes in the senior categories of boys and girls respectively. In the junior categories Harkeerat Singh and Nancy were adjudged the best athletes, while Gurinder Singh and Harmanpreet Kaur bagged the sub-junior titles.

Punjab volleyball tourney to be held from Jan 3
Ludhiana, December 24
The 49th edition of the Punjab State Volleyball Championship for men as well as women will be held at Patiala from January 3 to 5, according to Mr Raj Kumar, general secretary, Punjab Volleyball Association. Teams from all districts along with those from PAP, the BSF, the PSEB and the PRTC are expected to take part in this three-day meet. Entries may be sent to Mr Naresh Pathak, organising secretary for this tournament.
