Patwari held: The Vigilance Bureau has arrested Mohan Singh, patwari of Tolenangal village in Ajnala tehsil, for accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000. The SSP, Vigilance, in a press note on Friday, said that acting on the complaint of Jasbir Singh of the village, a trap was laid. The accused was demanding a bribe to give number of the land of Jasbir Singh. A case has been registered.
Petrol dealers: The Punjab Petroleum Dealers Association has said its dealer-member would not accept oil and other products from private transporters. Mr J.P. Khanna, president of the association, said on Friday that dealers in the state had tanker trucks which satisfied them about the quality of the product.
Camp for deaf, dumb: A free medical check-up camp was organised for the deaf and dumb and mentally challenged by the Red Cross Society and the district hospital welfare section here on Friday. It was inaugurated by Mr Kirandeep Bhullar, Deputy Commissioner and president of the District Red Cross Society, and Ms Sukhwant Bhuller, Chairperson of the hospital welfare section.

One killed in accident: One person died near the sabzi mandi on Friday after his motorcycle collided with a truck. The victim, Manpreet Singh, was shifted to the Civil Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The body has been handed over to his family.

College annual function: The annual function of Vishwa Mitter Sekhri College was held on Friday. Mr Ramesh Dogra, Health Minister, Punjab, was the chief guest. The foundation stone of the Satluj block was also laid. The students presented a cultural programme.

Woman hangs herself: Balbir Kumari (25) allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself with a ceiling fan at her house on Thursday night. According to police sources, she was mentally upset.

Farmers’ club: Nawanshahr Central Cooperative Bank launched a Nabard-sanctioned farmers’ club at Mazara Jattan village, in the district on Friday. Mr D.K. Kapila, AGM, District Development (Nabard), advised farmers and artisans to adopt the principle of development through
credit.

Fire in cotton godown: Following a reported short-circuit in a godown near the trolley union at Sunam, about 13 km from here, hundreds of quintals of “narma” (cotton plant) were destroyed on Friday. After receiving the report, two fire engines from Sangrur rushed to Sunam and extinguished the fire in about three hours.
