Stolen Jain idols found
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, December 2
The arrest of a person carrying illegal arms at Bhiwani today evening, led the police to the recovery of 28 ancient Jain idols, worth crores of rupees. These idols, including 25 other idols, were stolen from Sri Digambar Jain temple, Hansi, in October this year.

The Bhiwani police had received a complaint that an accused in the attempt to murder case, Naveen, who was out on bail, was in possession of illegal arms. A police party raided his house, and was successful in nabbing him from Cont Road, Bhiwani. A 315 bore pistol and three cartridges were found in his possession.

Naveen, who is a son of a police Constable, Sukhbir Singh (also posted at Bhiwani), was arrested under various sections of the Arms Act. During his interrogation, he revealed that he had hatched and later executed the plan to steal the ancient idols and sell them to international smugglers, along with his three other friends - Rajpal, Rishi and Ram Kumar.

Once, the accused had confessed to the crime, the police got into action, and recovered 28 of these idols from Bhiwani and Dhanana village. The other accused, however, have not been arrested.

The Director-General of Police, Haryana, Mr Nirmal Singh, informed TNS that the four had hatched the conspiracy to steal the idols while they were lodged in the Bhiwani Jail. “Naveen is an accused in an attempt to murder case, while Rajpal was arrested on charges of narcotics smuggling. Rishi and Ram Kumar were arrested on charges of theft. The accused had planned to execute the theft after they were released on bail. Once out of jail, they conducted a recconaissance of the temple on October 20 and again on October 25, before they finally stole the idols on October 26,” he said.

PGIMS admits woman to verify kidney removal
Tribune News Service

Rohtak, December 2
After dithering for the second consecutive day the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) authorities today finally agreed to admit Mrs Omal Malik for conducting tests to verify whether one of her kidneys was removed during an operation for the removal of a stone in 2003 in a private nursing home of Panipat.

The woman had alleged that she was admitted to Geeta Nursing Home at Panipat two years ago for the removal of a stone in her pelvis. However, the doctors fraudulently removed her kidney during the surgery. She came to know about it a few days back when she developed pain in her abdomen and routine tests indicated that her left kidney was missing.

The Panipat police had registered a case against Dr S.N. Gupta under the Transplantation of Human Organ Act, 1994. Subsequently, the woman was sent to the PGIMS here yesterday for certain tests to confirm or negate the allegations.

The PGIMS authorities constituted a board of doctors to examine her yesterday. However, this morning the PGIMS authorities first delayed the tests and then wanted to refer her back to Panipat on some excuses. The woman’s family members refused to give in and created a furore inside the office of the Medical Superintendent. A large group of mediapersons also reached the spot.

The MS and the PGIMS Director went into a long huddle following which the woman was admitted to the Urology ward. Doctors said the tests would begin tomorrow.

However, these tests are only a legal formality. The CAT scans and other advanced radiology tests performed at a reputed local diagnostic centre have already concluded that the woman’s “left kidney is not visualised”.
