Rain reigns on day one
Chennai, December 2 The abandonment meant star batsman Sachin Tendulkar would have to wait for his record-breaking 35th Test century as also former captain Sourav Ganguly, returning to the national team after being ignored for the one-day series against Sri Lanka and South Africa. Play was officially called off at 11.30 am but it was a foregone conclusion once it began to rain in the wee hours. There was a brief respite in the morning, kindling hopes of a delayed start, but the skies opened again at around 9.30 am and the rain did not relent after that. Play will begin at 9 am in the next four days with a minimum of 97 overs each day. But the forecast of a severe thunderstorm for the next four days has put a doubt on whether the match can start at all. The sporting public of Chennai had been a disappointed lot after the washout of the one-day international between India and South Africa on November 22. The venue had hosted Sri Lanka’s first Test in India in 1982 when the islanders forced Sunil Gavaskar’s men to fight for a draw even as the flair of Roy Dias and Duleep Mendis captured the imagination of the cricketing world. None from the current team, however, has played a Test in Chennai. Coach Tom Moody, though, made his ODI debut as part of the World Cup-winning Australian team in 1987 when Allan Border’s men clinched a one-run victory off the penultimate ball over Kapil Dev’s team. For Indian cricket fans, their wait to see Tendulkar create a world record will continue. Tendulkar has 34 tons to his name, the same as his compatriot and former captain Sunil Gavaskar, and the highest for a player in Tests. It is also an important game for Ganguly, who had a spat with coach Greg Chappell on the tour of Zimbabwe and was subsequently removed as captain. Selected for just one Test, this is literally a litmus test for the Bengal player who is India’s most successful captain. Also put on hold was the rivalry between Tendulkar and the record-breaking off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. It remains to be seen how lucky the venue would turn out to be for the bowler with 563 wickets in 95 Tests after an ordinary show in the one-day series.

Haryana take eight-run lead
Mohali, December 2 Joginder began by removing opener Karan Goel for nought when the total was one. The second wicket fell at the score of five when skipper Dinesh Mongia was trapped leg before by Joginder for a duck. Punjab’s reliable batsman Pankaj Dharmani, too, went cheaply (9 off 18 balls). He was caught at third slip by Rana off Joginder Sharma. However, the partnership of 74 runs between opener Ravneet Ricky (58 off 161) and Munish Sharma (33 off 85) for the fifth wicket revived Punjab. Gaurav Gupta hit 49 in 74 balls before he was run out. In the second innings, Haryana made a shaky start
again. They lost two early wickets as Chetan Sharma and Sunny Singh played loose shots. Gagandeep and Mongia shared one wicket each. Bagheshwar Bisht (18 n.o.) and S Verma (4 n.o.) were at the crease with the total at 38 for 2 when stumps were drawn. HPCA row takes another turn
Dharamsala, December 2 Addressing a press conference today, Mr Gautam Thakur, HPCA secretary, and Mr Sanjay Sharma, HPCA spokesperson, said no proceedings to disaffiliate their association had been initiated so far. “The entire episode that led to the calling off of the Ranji Trophy match between Himachal Pradesh and Tripura yesterday was politically motivated and no action was taken by the district administration against the association led by Mr Zar, even though two separate complaints were given by us,” said Mr Sharma. They alleged that the attempt to sabotage the Ranji match was made by the other association but no action had been taken against them for political reasons. “No case has been registered against Mr Vikas Thakur, son of Forests and Sports Minister Mr Ram Lal Thakur, even though he tried to barge into the stadium by breaking the lock and misbehaved with the security guards,” they added. Mr Thakur said it was unfortunate that the match had to be called off due to the controversy triggered off by Mr Zar. |

Mahesh, Sania to team up
New Delhi, December 2 Though this is a one-off pairing, Mahesh did not rule out the possibility of an enduring partnership with Sania on the Grand Slam circuit. Mahesh said he had first teamed up with Sania and won the gold in the Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad two years ago, and would be partnering her in the Asian Games at Doha next year. “There are chances of the two of us playing together”, he said. “I am so excited, it’s an honour for me to play in this event. The match will also give me a chance to test my fitness as I would be leaving for Australia in a couple of days”, Sania said. Sania has been out of tennis action for the past few weeks due to a back injury and she would use the mixed doubles match here to test her fitness before going to Australia to tune up for the Australian Open early next year. The ABN-Amro event has attracted the best talent in the country like Davis cuppers Rohan Bopanna, Harsh Mankad, Sunil Kumar Sipaeya and Vishal Uppal, besides promising juniors like Karan Rastogi, Divij Sharan, Vivek Shokeen and Jeevan Nedunchezian. Shikha Uberoi is the added attraction in the women’s section. In the draw for the event held today, Harsh Mankad will meet Jeevan Nedunchezian in the first quarterfinal. The other matches will be between Vishal Uppal and Sunil Kumar, Karan Rastogi and Vivek Shokeen, Divij Sharan and Rohan Bopanna, and Shikha Uberoi and Michaella Krajicek. Richard Krajicek will play against Mahesh Bhupathi in the much-awaited singles match. Mahesh said it would probably his last singles match, certainly in Delhi. Krajicek, who has won 17 singles titles and four doubles titles with fellow Dutch player Jan Siemerink, had won the Wimbledon title in 1996, and was ranked fourth, his highest on the ATP list, in 1999. Mahesh said the tournament, besides giving an opportunity to the Indian boys of a wild-card entry into the qualifying rounds of the 33rd World Tennis Tournament at Ahoy (Rotterdam) in February, 2006, would also offer a total prize money of $15,000. He said it was supported by the All-India Tennis Association (AITA), adding that the winner would take home over $4,000 in prize money. Bopanna, who had missed the inaugural edition of the ABN-Amro Tournament in Mumbai last year, said he was eagerly looking forward to his matches tomorrow as he would be pitted against his Davis Cup colleagues. Harsh Mankad and Sunil Kumar are on the trail of Bopanna for a slot in the Davis Cup team, and they will spare no effort to impress the AITA selectors. |
Saqlain suspended for three matches
Chennai, December 2 Saqlain was involved in an incident at the Hamburg Masters Championship with Australia’s Craig Victory and the latter suffered a broken jaw and other facial injuries. “At the hearing held at the FIH (international hockey federation) office in Lausanne last Sunday, Saqlain was found guilty of deliberately raising his stick at the Hamburg championship in August,” the game’s world governing body said in a statement. The suspension ruled Saqlain out of Pakistan’s opening three matches in the elite six-nation event scheduled here from December 10 to 18. — PTI |
