India suffer huge defeat Kolkata, November 25 After skittling out the hosts for a paltry 188 in 45.5 overs on a green-tinged track, captain Smith unleashed his batting artistry to notch up his fifth ODI century and steer his team home for an unassailable 2-1 lead in the five-match series. The hosts were thoroughly outplayed in all departments of the game as the Proteas first produced a clinical bowling display and then overhauled the target with 14.1 overs to spare, turning the crucial floodlit encounter at the Eden Gardens into a totally lop-sided affair. Smith gave a fine exhibition of strokeplay as he seemed to be in trouble at all during his 124-ball knock to put on 189 runs with Andrew Hall (48 not out) for the opening partnership. The Indians were a pale shadow of themselves as the famed batting line-up failed to last out the 50 overs after Shaun Pollock (3-25) had caused the early jolts. Andrew Hall also chipped in with three wickets, including the prized scalps of Virender Sehwag and M.S. Dhoni. It was only the fourth time India had lost a one-dayer by 10 wickets, and the first time at home. The home team could have been in a far more embarrassing position had it not been for a defiant 81-run sixth wicket partnership between Yuvraj Singh (53) and Mohammad Kaif (46) which provided a semblance of respectability to the total. The two teams will now travel to Mumbai for the fifth and last one-dayer to be held under floodlights on November 28, a game which India have to win to level the series. It turned out to be a poor day for the Indians who failed to live up to expectations of a near-capacity crowd at the Eden Gardens which at times showed that it had still not come to terms with the sacking of local hero Sourav Ganguly from the one-day outfit. A section of the crowd chanted slogans against coach Greg Chappell and held aloft posters and banners calling for the recall of Ganguly. Put into bat on a track which favoured the pace bowlers, the Indians never really recovered from the early blows as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. Pollock wrecked the top order to reduce the hosts to a precarious 71 for five before Yuvraj and Kaif salvaged the innings to some extent with a face-saving partnership. After Yuvraj’s 78-ball knock was brought to an end by spinner Botha, the Indians suffered another dramatic collapse. Sachin becomes most capped ODI player
Kolkata, November 25 Tendulkar, who made his debut against Pakistan at Gujranwala in 1989, played his 357th ODI match today, surpassing former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram. The master batsman, the first to score over 50 hundreds in international cricket, was cheered by the 70,000-strong Eden crowd after India were put in to bat in the day-night match. Tendulkar could have achieved the milestone at Chennai, but the match was washed out.

SC turns down BCCI plea on observer’s ruling
New Delhi, November 25 The BCCI also questioned the observer issuing notices to four state cricket bodies asking them to prove their eligibility to vote in the election, scheduled to be held on November 29 in the annual general meeting (AGM) of the board. A Bench of Mr Justice B.P. Singh and Mr Justice R.V. Raveendran refused to entertain the petition of the BCCI, saying the election would go on as scheduled and if any dispute arises out of it, any aggrieved party will be free to move the court, thus clearing the way for uninterrupted proceedings of AGM on November 29. BCCI counsel made a special mention of the petition before the apex court, calling for its interference alleging that the action of the observer was “arbitrary”. Former Election Commissioner T.S. Krishnamurthy, appointed as observer by the BCCI to oversee the election of its president and office bearers with the approval of the Supreme Court, had yesterday ruled that board chief Ranbir Singh Mahindra could not cast a regular vote as per rules but only has a right of his “casting vote”. Krishnamurthy, who was allowed by the Court to evolve his own procedure to conduct the elections, scheduled to be held on November 29 in the board’s AGM, had also issued notices to the cricket associations of Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and the National Cricket Club (NCC) of Kolkata to prove their eligibility to vote. While eligibility of Delhi District Cricket Association and the NCC was questioned by the observer on the ground that they had not held the AGMs of their respective bodies in recent years, cricket associations of HP and UP were questioned due to dispute over the control of the bodies between rival factions. The AGM was adjourned on September 29 after a bitter legal fight among rival factions represented by BCCI president Mahindra and Union Minister Sharad Pawar, who lost last time to him but considered to be in advantageous position this time. Observers keeping close watch on BCCI politics, feel that if the four cricket bodies were debarred from voting, Mahindra’s chances of re-election would be further weakened. The Court, while approving the appointment of Krishnamurthy as observer on October 25, had empowered him to decide any question relating to the validity of the votes of state associations, disqualification and eligibility of any candidate to contest as per the BCCI rules. While ordering audio and video recording of the entire proceedings of the AGM, the Court had directed the observer to submit his report along with the tapes before December 12. The Court had also directed the observer that if there was any dispute over the disqualification of any candidate or vote, such votes should be kept in separate envelop to be submitted to the Court, which would give its final verdict on it. |
Lara set to break Border’s record
Adelaide, November 25 Lara toyed with the Australian attack, scoring 202 not out and registering
his 31st Test hundred to take his career tally to 11,163 runs, just 11 behind
Border’s record of 11,174.
His brilliant innings helped the tourists, already 2-0 down and facing
the prospect of a series whitewash, reach stumps in the healthy position
of 352 for seven after slumping to 53-3 before lunch. All rounder Dwayne Bravo made 34, wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin 27 and West Indian captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul chipped in with 25 although there was little argument about who had led the fightback. Lara, playing possibly his final Test on Australian soil, came into the match on the back of a string of modest scores but was clearly in the mood for something special on a hot and humid day at Adelaide Oval. He joined Border as the only players to score 11,000 Test runs when he eased his way to 39 then raised his half-century off 92 balls. The left-hander raced to his century off 144 deliveries when he dispatched Australia’s fastest bowler Brett Lee to the boundary twice in one over. He got to 200 off 261 balls when he again hooked Lee to the fence then ended the day on 202 from 266 balls in six hours, featuring 20 fours and poised for another world record. The 36-year-old from Trinidad already holds the world record for the highest individual Test (400 not out) and first-class (501 not out) scores. Pune, November 25 In a stay of 384 minutes at the crease, the Bengal southpaw, who was involved in a partnership of 160 runs with Rohan Gavaskar for the sixth wicket, made 159 runs from 227 balls with 17 hits to the boundary. Ganguly was involved in another small partnership of 44 runs for the seventh wicket with all-rounder Laxmi R Shukla, who made 42 runs. His partnerships with Rohan and Shukla in the middle order helped Bengal reach a total of 378 all out. Maharashtra were 101 for three at close of play. New Delhi: Mumbai spinner Ramesh Powar (4 for 65) scythed through the Delhi top order and despite the heroics of Mithun Manhas (77 not out), the hosts were struggling to avoid the follow-on on the penultimate day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium here today. In reply to Mumbai’s first innings score of 551, Delhi were 241 for six at stumps with Manhas and Sarandeep Singh (0) at the crease. Team-mates may quit like Taibu
Harare, November 25 Several players, including some with national team experience, met last night with players representative Clive Field to discuss the void that will be left behind by Taibu when he goes to England in a few weeks’ time. “They are very concerned about the situation as it stands, and in particular the growing danger to Zimbabwe’s Test status through the loss of our best players,” Field told The Associated Press. “We are all having a meeting on Monday to review our responses to what has happened. “This has all been a great shock to them and they are worried about their own futures. For many of them cricket is all they have,” he said.
Field said there would not be any collective decision. |

Delhi fighting to avoid follow-on
New Delhi, November 25 In reply to Mumbai’s first innings score of 551, Delhi were 241 for six at stumps with Manhas and Sarandeep Singh (0) at the crease. Resuming their innings on 40 for no loss, Delhi cruised to 72 before Ramesh Powar lured Test discard Aakash Chopra (33) out of the crease and Vinayak Samant did a smart work whipping off the bails to send the opener back. The burly left-arm spinner struck two more blows in quick succession. He first removed Rajan Gupta (3) who offered a bad-pad catch at silly point in the 39th over and in his next over, Powar unleashed a vicious delivery that kissed Varun Kumar’s (19) blade before finding Wasim Jaffer’s safe hands in the first slip. Delhi still need 161 runs to avoid the follow-on with four wickets in hand. HP beat Vidarbha
Nagpur: Ashok Thakur and Vikram Malik engineered a collpase as Himachal Pradesh defeated Vidarbha by 14 runs on the third day of the Ranji Trophy Plate Group match at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground on Friday. The home team, needing 181 for a win, were dismissed for 166 just after lunch.

George Best dead
London, November 25 Best, who had been in hospital since the beginning of October, underwent a liver transplant in 2002 after years of heavy drinking. He was admitted to hospital after suffering a reaction to the treatment he was receiving for his new liver and then developed an infection and internal bleeding. “After a long and very valiant fight, Best died this afternoon in the intensive care unit at Cromwell Hospital,” a spokesman for the hospital said. Best played 37 times for Northern Ireland, who were never able to qualify for the World Cup during his international career which spanned 13 years from 1964 to 1977. Despite the lack of international success, he was the first footballer to attract a worldwide following because of his good looks, his mercurial talent and the fact he played for a glamorous Manchester United team that was an integral part of the Swinging Sixties. Regarded by many as the greatest player to come from the British Isles, he was a member of Manchester United’s European Cup winning team in 1968, the year he was named European Footballer of the Year.
