Pawar seeks Dalmiya’s cooperation
Kolkata, November 30 Mr Pawar, who was elected BCCI President yesterday, went to Mr Dalmiya’s residence in South Kolkata this morning. The two were closeted for about half an hour. Later, Mr Pawar told reporters that he had sought Mr Dalmiya’s cooperation on pending cases which the BCCI was facing in and outside India. “There are domestic as well as international issues. There are some legal problems which the board faces in and outside India. If not properly handled, this may prove to be a serious liability to the board and affect cricket,” the Union Agriculture Minister said. “Nobody except Dalmiya knows each and every issue,” he said. As the new President of BCCI, he said, “It is my duty to request him for his cooperation and use his experience in the interest of the Board as well as Indian cricket.” Mr Dalmiya assured him of cooperation in the larger interest of cricket and the organisation, Mr Pawar added. Confirm itinerary, asks PCB
Lahore: The Pakistan cricket authorities have asked Mr Sharad Pawar, the newly elected President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), to finalise the itinerary for next year’s tour to Pakistan by India. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan sent a message today to his Indian counterpart, inviting him to Pakistan and asking him to confirm the tour itinerary as soon as possible. Although the Pakistan board sent a proposed tour itinerary to India last month, they have yet to receive conformation. The proposed itinerary has India arriving in Pakistan on January 1 and playing three Tests in Lahore, Faisalabad and Karachi, followed by five one-dayers in Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan and Karachi. The Indian tour will be followed by the Asia Cup from
February 16. “The Chairman congratulated Pawar and his colleagues on their election victory and asked them to settle matters quickly as we have to make preparations for the tour in advance,” PCB director Abbas Zaidi said. Zaidi said many security and logistical details needed to be resolved before the start of India’s tour. “Like last year, we are expecting a lot of visitors from across the border for the matches and we have to meet the government and finalise the visa policy for the tour,” he said. New BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah said the itinerary would be discussed when senior board officials hold meetings in Mumbai over the weekend.

Yousuf rescues Pakistan
Lahore, November 30 Yousuf, who was dropped on 16 by Andrew Flintoff at second slip, held the innings together after the early loss of three wickets
and the retirement of captain Inzamam-ul-Haq. Inzamam retired hurt on 35 in the first over after tea when he was hit on the right wrist by fast bowler Steve Harmison with the total on 148 for three. He had put on 79 with Yousuf. Shoaib Akhtar was at the crease when bad light ended play 19 overs early. Play also ended 13 overs early on the first day despite the lights being on. Yousuf, who has carried a shoulder problem during the series, survived some anxious moments to rescue Pakistan from 68 for three. He faced an awkward time against a consistent stream of short-pitched balls but survived to hit 14 fours in his innings. His runs came after Matthew Hoggard had removed Shoaib Malik (0) and Asim Kamal (five) before lunch. Debutant Liam Plunkett then took his first wicket on his 11th ball when he got Salman Butt (28) to edge behind to Geraint Jones. Hasan Raza was out for 21 just before play ended, caught by Andrew Flintoff at gully off Harmison after hitting four boundaries. Raza was only selected for the final Test because Younis Khan was unavailable and Shahid Afridi had been banned for scuffing the pitch during the match at Faisalabad. The 23-year-old had disappointed in the first Test in Multan with scores of nought and one but he played some exquisitely timed shots on both sides of the wicket during the final session. England need to win the Test to draw the series. Scoreboard

Ganguly cynosure of all eyes
Chennai, November 30 For onlookers, the much publicised spat between coach Greg Chappell and Ganguly must have looked a thing of the past as the “Prince of Kolkata” listened attentively to Chappell’s advice soon after he completed his 20 minutes of batting practice on two different pitches. Ganguly had just removed his gloves when Chappell walked up to him and appeared to be giving a few tips to the left-hander. Perhaps, the coach was advising Ganguly to open up his shoulders when he goes for a drive. Chappell spent a little over five minutes with Ganguly. Captain Rahul Dravid and his men were also busy at the nets during the strenuous three hours of physical conditioning and a volleyball match. According to present scheme of things in the Indian team, Ganguly, who was picked in the squad for the first Test by the selection committee meeting on November 23, is most likely to make it to the playing XI. He is likely to bat at number six, according to board sources, after Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and V.V.S. Laxman.

Lara up to 2nd spot in Test ranking
Dubai, November 30 Lara’s innings of 226 contributed to a five-place rise in the ranking, moving him past among others Australian captain Ricky Ponting (down one place to third) and Matthew Hayden (holding steady at sixth spot). Now, only South Africa’s Jacques Kallis, the ICC’s Test Player of the Year, is ahead of him. The three Indians in the top 10 include Rahul Dravid, placed at five, followed by Virender Sehwag on seventh and Sachin Tendulkar on ninth. In the team ranking, Australia have now extended their lead at the top of the table, thanks to a 3-0 clean sweep of the three-match series against the West Indies. Among the bowlers, Glenn McGrath still sits on top of the rankings while Shane Warne lies third, the two Australians separated by Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan in a tightly packed top three. Irfan Pathan is the only Indian bowler in the top 10, placed ninth ahead of South African paceman Andre Nel.

Punjab have edge over Haryana
Mohali, November 30 Both teams have earned four points each by winning their opening matches in the group. However, the coaches cannot afford to be complacent as the tailenders of both teams emerged as saviours in crunch situations in their first matches. The performance of Punjab, who beat Services by six wickets in their first match, was not up to the mark. Some of their key batsmen were responsible for the collapse (83 for 7) in the first innings. They threw their wickets while playing loose shots. Tailenders Amit Uniyal and Ishan Malhotra came to the rescue of the team with their spectacular
performance. In their first encounter with Uttar Pradesh at Kanpur, Haryana, too, were on the verge of collapse on the third day but the team fought back to emerge winners thanks to the fine performance of tailenders Pardip Sahu and Jatinder Malik. With the return of medium pacer Gagandeep Singh, Punjab have an edge over Haryana. Gagandeep, who has been termed as a potential match-winner by coach Intikhab Alam, was away to play for Board President’s XI against Sri Lanka. Gagan would be included in the playing squad in place of Vineet Sharma. It is also likely that left-arm spinner Navdeep would get the berth as the team would like to strengthen their spin attack for tomorrow’s match. The team is also formidable with big names like Dinesh Mongia, Reetinder Singh Sodhi and Pankaj Dharmani. Intikhab rated Haryana a better team than Services. Following the dictum, “perform or perish”, he showed the door to Ankur Kakkar and brought in Karan Goyal, who scored two centuries (138 and 124) in under-22 matches. On the other hand, Haryana coach Ashwini Kumar is least bothered about the formidable rivals. “Ours is a balanced side which is pretty good in all departments of the game. We also have players capable of changing the complexion of the game”, said the coach. Sunny Singh, who scored three centuries on the trot last season, is a consistent performer. Besides him, local lad and dashing opener Bagheshwar Bisht, medium pacer Joginder Sharma, leg spinner Amit Mishra and Chetan Sharma are the key members of the Haryana team, who won the Plate trophy beating Services
last season. The match will be held on the same pitch which was used during the one-dayer between India and Sri Lanka on October 28. The pitch would help seamers early on due to the moisture, said a technical expert. The match will start at 9.30 a.m. Teams: Punjab: Dinesh Mongia (captain), Reetinder Sodhi, Pankaj Dharmani, Gagandeep Singh, Ravneet Ricky, Munish Sharma, Rajesh Sharma, Navdeep Singh, Amit Uniyal, Gaurav Gupta, Vineet Sharma, Bipul Sharma, Ishan Malhotra, Loveabhilish, Karan Goyal. Coach-cum-manager: Intikhab Alam. Haryana: Amit Mishra, (captain), Chetan Sharma, Bageshwar Bisht, Sunny Singh, Shafiq Khan, Joginder Sharma, Ramesh Rawat, Sachin Rana, Gaurav Vashisht, Jatender Malik, Saurabh Virmani, Tajinder Mann, Sandeep Singh, Pardeep Sahu. Coach-cum-manager: Ashwini Kumar. |
PCA for taking cricket to villages
Kolkata, November 30 Talking to The Tribune at Taj Bengal hotel last evening, Mr Parvinder Singh said they were happy that the Jagmohan Dalmiya group had been ousted at last. He said a change in the BCCI set-up was long overdue since it had not serving the interest of cricket in the country. He hoped Mr Pawar and the new committee would ensure a transparent administration in the BCCI and improve the standard of Indian cricket. Mr Parvinder Singh demanded that the BCCI should set up a separate TV channel which would telecast all cricket matches during the season, while during the rest of the year, they would run the TV channel commercially. This would not only resolve the telecast rights controversy and stop some corrupt practices but also bring extra revenue to the BCCI for spending on raising the level of Indian cricket, he added. The PCA official alleged that in the past 20 years, cricket at the school level had been ignored. He said the BCCI had so far paid no attention towards nurturing the talent of budding cricketers. The money collected through various sources had been spent on non-cricket activities, he alleged. Mr Parvinder Singh demanded that more professional cricketers should be brought in the forefront for training youngsters in schools and colleges all over the country. He said cricket should be made a compulsory part of sports education and the BCCI should take the lead in this regard. |

HP minister’s son tries to barge into stadium
Dharamsala, November 30 In a complaint to the police, Mr Sanjay Sharma, an HPCA official, said when Mr Thakur was denied entry, his supporters tried to break the lock on the main gate with an iron rod and manhandled the security guards. Talking to The Tribune, Mr Thakur said Mr Rajinder Zar was given the authority to vote as the representative of the HPCA at the annual general meeting of the BCCI held yesterday. “It is our association which stands affiliated with the BCCI but the officials of the body led by Mr Anurag Thakur are not willing to understand this. I have spoken to BCCI Joint Secretary M.P.Pandove and he would fax us the order issued in this regard to us,” he said. He alleged that non-Himachalis were being allowed to play in the HPCA team as “back-door entries”. “Since the trials for the Ranji Trophy match between HP and Tripura were scheduled for today, we wanted to ensure that no players from outside Himachal were allowed to play in the team on the basis of fake documents. We have decided to drop the previous teams which were not selected under our supervision,” he said. “We had only gone there to supervise the trials and it was the other party that tried to create a scene by not allowing us to enter,” he added. Meanwhile, Mr Sharma said the Supreme Court appointed observer, T.S.Krishnamurthy, had only given Mr Zar the right to vote in the AGM and no affiliation was granted to the association led by him. “Our association is already affiliated with the BCCI and the matter is before the High Court in Shimla and an interim relief has already been granted to us on May 18, 2005,” he said. Mr Sharma said all members of the HPCA team were selected at the district level, except two professionals from outside. There are no ‘backdoor entries’ in the team,” he claimed. |
Neelam given time to submit more documents
New Delhi, November 30 “Neelam said she wanted to provide the panel with some more documents pertaining to her case and we can only take a decision once we receive them,” Delhi Medical Association Secretary Girish Tyagi, one of the members on the four-man panel, told PTI today. Tyagi, however, could not specify what additional information the athlete wanted to
provide. The panel, headed by Tamil Nadu Athletics Association president Walter Davaram, which has former athletes G.S. Randhawa and Adille Sumariwala as the other members, met on the sidelines of the National Junior Athletics Meet held on November 25-29 in Chennai and were expected to arrive at a final decision there. “Neelam or her counsel did not appear before the panel in Chennai. They may have made the request through a letter to the Athletics Federation of India,” Tyagi said. “We have given her 20 days to furnish whatever documents she wants to give and told her in no uncertain terms that it would be the last chance for her
as there would be no further postponements,” the DMA Secretary said. The documents were expected to be received by the middle of December, he said. Admitting that the matter had been pending for a long time, Tyagi, however, claimed there was no set deadline. “The next meeting of the panel would be held in Delhi and Dawaram and Sumariwala would make a trip to the Capital for it,” he added.
