INLD: high court issue raised to divert attention
Chandigarh, November 30 The secretary-general of the INLD, Mr Ajay Singh Chautala, said here yesterday that his party would accept a separate high court for Haryana only if Chandigarh was brought under its jurisdiction. He said at present Chandigarh was under the jurisdiction of the Punjab and Haryana High Court because it was the joint capital of the two states. He alleged that the Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, was planning to hand over the jurisdiction of Chandigarh to the proposed separate Punjab High Court in the name of having a separate high court for Haryana. He said the people of Haryana and his party would not withdraw their claim to Chandigarh till the SYL canal was completed and the Hindi-speaking areas of Punjab were transferred to Haryana. Alleging that the Congress had always been harming the interests of Haryana, Mr Chautala said when Mr Bansi Lal was the Chief Minister, he disaffiliated the state colleges from Panjab University, thus allowing it to be exclusively for Punjab. He claimed that the success of the INLD’s Sampla rally was an indication that the people of the state were disappointed with the Hooda government. The law and order situation in the state was worsening and all development works had come to a standstill. |

The coordination committee, which will function as a link between the party and the government, is dominated by men from the organisation with only two persons from the government in it. However, the central leadership has tried to give representation to major communities in the state in the coordination committee with presence of leaders from backward classes and the Dalits and the Punjabi
Community. Finance Minister Birender Singh, who was chairman of the manifesto committee before the elections, has been left out of both committees. |

Intensive checking of
sugarcane trucks
Ambala, November 30 Some of the sugarcane farmers from Uttar Pradesh alleged that they are being forcibly stopped at the border even though they had complete documents. Only those trucks whose documents reflected that the sugarcane had been loaded in Uttar Pradesh were allowed to proceed while those trucks where the sugarcane had been loaded in Haryana were stopped at Devi Nagar. Since late last night, an intensive drive had been launched by the district administration to stop and check documents of sugarcane loaded trucks. About two dozen sugarcane-loaded trucks were stopped at Devi Nagar and their documents were checked. A few trucks were allowed to proceed to Punjab after their documents showed their sugarcane had been loaded in Uttar Pradesh while the rest were not allowed to proceed further. Deputy Commissioner, Ambala, J.P. Kaushik, said that about two dozen trucks carrying sugarcane were checked. “We allowed those trucks to go to Punjab whose documents clearly showed that they had come from Uttar Pradesh. The sugarcane loaded trucks from Haryana were not allowed to go to Punjab since it is a violation of the Cane Control Act,” he said. He explained that if sugarcane is taken away from the area of the assigned
sugarmill, it violates the Act. He stated that the capacity of the sugarmill is adversely affected if the sugarcane from the assigned area is taken elsewhere. “The checking of sugarcane loaded trucks is a
continuous process,” he said. “I would like to stress that we are trying to ensure that middlemen do not misuse and make profit. We understand that middlemen buy sugarcane from farmers at a cheaper rate here and sell it at a profit in Punjab,” he said. Mr Kaushik said that direction have already been given to lodge an FIR against one person who was found to be violating the Act. “We are also carrying out checking of the documents of all the sugarcane loaded and appropriate action will be taken against the violators. Incidentally, the sugarcane loaded from Uttar Pradesh were fined for overloading as well as having excess height,” he said. Mr Meher Singh from Sarsawa in Uttar Pradesh claimed that his sugarcane loaded truck had been stopped
even though he had complete documents. “I not only have the receipt of the
`dharam kanta’ in UP, I also have the booking receipt of the truck in UP. We were stopped late last night near the border,” he said. He alleged that the drive has been initiated so that sugarcane farmers were forced to supply only in Haryana. To a query, he said that the situation of sugarcane payment in Uttar Pradesh is worse than Haryana. “We go to Punjab since we get timely payment in Punjab,” he said. |
