The amount of the “war jagir” has been raised from Rs 1200 to Rs 1870 per month. “Financial assistance is being provided to ex-servicemen above the age of 65 and to widows of ex-servicemen. We are taking full care of the soldiers and their families and they have a full-fledged department— Sainik Welfare Department— at their disposal,” said the Chief Minister. Capt Amarinder Singh also inspected the Quarter Guard of the battalion and was even seen mingling with the serving and retired soldiers, with whom he also had a cup of tea. |

Punjab in for power crisis this winter
Phagwara, November 6 Though the water level in the Bhakhra Dam is at its maximum capacity, it can only provide 34 per cent of Punjab’s total electricity requirement, sources at PSEB add. But there is a low inflow of water to other hydro projects, which, as such, may not be able to generate power at their full capacity. Authorities say that under such circumstances, the Board may not be able to the meet the demand for power during the day hours, though it will be in surplus during the night. A senior PSEB engineer said that crops like potatoes and wheat require controlled irrigation, which is not possible during night hours. “So the farming sector will need sufficient power during the day.” Keeping the imminent crisis in mind, PSEB authorities are trying to sign contracts with the Power Trading Corporation and other supplying agencies, say sources. Meanwhile, the Board has started decreasing the water level in the Ranjit Sagar Dam to inspect a water tunnel (number P1), which is scheduled to start from February 1 next year. The inspection of the tunnels is necessary because of safety requirements. The dam had become operational five years ago and the inspection of tunnel number P2 was completed last year. For a floating crane to properly inspect the tunnel number P1, water level in the dam should be at 494 metres, add sources. At present, the level of water is at 515.97 metres in the dam. Earlier, the authorities had decided to fill the dam up to 525 metres to check the strength of the structure, but it could not be filled beyond 323 metres due to low inflow of water. |

Real estate, steel safe investments, says expert
Jalandhar, November 6 “This is the best time for those investors who want to play safe during the ongoing volatile period. They should invest in the real estate, steel and auto parts sectors, which are witnessing a record but stable growth, ” says Mr H.L. Chopra, a renowned financial expert. He is also the director and advisor of Edelweiss Insurance Brokers Limited and Edelweiss Securities Private Limited. Mr Chopra, a recipient of the International Association of Networking Professionals’ World Leader Award in 2004 for insurance and capital markets, rates India and China as the best destinations as far as investments are concerned. “Investment in India is fetching a return of 14 per cent,” he added. Currently Japan, not the US, was the No. 1 investor in India, said Mr Chopra. “After remaining dull for four years, steel is now recording an unparalleled average growth of 400 per cent per annum, primarily because of the great demand of Indian steel in China,” Mr Chopra said. “Real estate has also picked up during the past one year with an average growth rate of 200 per cent. The same is the case with auto-parts sector, which will witness another boom as many auto players are entering the Indian market. So in my view, if a common or a new investor is planning to invest, he should choose one of these three sectors. None of them is to crash in near future,” said Mr Chopra. Edelweiss, which is armed with a team of near 600 professionals for advising investors in real estate, insurance brokering and investments, was going to open its branch in Jalandhar from December 1. “We will provide online share brokering and other services to people through our Jalandhar office. apart from guiding them about safe investments.” |
729 vehicles challaned in one month
Phagwara, November 6 According to Mr Sucha Singh, in-charge, Phagwara Traffic Police, several check-posts have been set up in different parts of the town to nab the offenders. The main emphasis of the drive, he said, was to keep a special check on over-speeding and underage drivers and riders. Sources said a majority of the challans were issued for not wearing a headgear, not carrying proper documents, not using seat-belts, triple riding, using pressure horns and wrong parking. “Next on our radar are polluting vehicles for which traffic wing personnel will hold a free pollution check-up camp at the local bus stand soon,” said Sucha Singh. The traffic police plans to carry out such drives once a month. |
Chaos every day at Rama Mandi Chowk
Jalandhar, November 6 This crossing on the G.T. Road is the lifeline of the city traffic, but the lack of attention to the problem on this Chowk has added to the woes of the commuters. During the rush hour, the Chowk can be seen choked with traffic, say daily commuters. Many feel that if the traffic is regulated properly at this Chowk, things can improve considerably. The Chowk, situated on way to the Jalandhar-Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar-Ludhiana highway, faces jams for long durations throughout the day, says Sangeeta who uses this route everyday to reach her office in Jalandhar City. Anita, another office-goer, airs similar views. She says that amid all this traffic, it becomes hard to cross the Chowk. The lack of proper traffic lights, regulation and erratic parking of buses on the roads joining at the Chowk adds to the problem. A local Akali leader, Mr Jagbir Brar, demanded that the lack of proper lights at the Chowk aggravates the
problem. He blamed the administration for not creating a proper bus stop for long route buses at the Chowk. |
Little thieves are looking for your car
Jalandhar, November 6 If some kid throws a stone on your car window, keep moving. If you stop the car and start shouting at the culprit, his silent friend may run away with your bag or purse from behind. These thieves are mostly 8 to 10 year olds. The other modus operandi is that a child knocks on the car door and as the agitated person shouts at him, the kid knocks louder making the owner come out of the car, little realizing that a second child standing close hurriedly opens the door and runs away with valuables. Usually there is an adult waiting for the kids at some turn of the street. |
