Dilshan, Arnold steer Lanka to victory
Ahmedabad, November 6 Playing for pride in the day-night encounter after having conceded an unassailable 4-0 lead to India in the seven-match series, the Sri Lankans overhauled the daunting target of 285 with 14 balls to spare at the Sardar Patel Stadium. Dilshan and Arnold featured in an unbroken partnership of 131 runs to nullify identical knocks of 103 by opening batsman Gautam Gambhir and skipper Rahul Dravid that propelled India to the stiff target. Dilshan remained unbeaten on 81 from 67 balls with eight fours while Arnold was 49 not out from 47 balls with four fours. Earlier, Gautam Gambhir’s maiden one-day hundred, combined with a fighting unbeaten 103 by captain Rahul Dravid, helped India overcome a middle-order collapse and post a challenging 285 for eight against Sri Lanka in the fifth one-day cricket international here today. Gambhir, playing in his first ODI in two and a half years, celebrated his return to the team with a rollicking knock of 103 — it was the first time since his 71 against Bangladesh during his debut series in Dhaka in 2003 that Gambhir had gone past the 50-mark — but the team needed a stellar performance from Dravid to set the visitors a stiff target in the day-night encounter at the Sardar Patel Stadium. After combining with Gambhir for a crucial fourth-wicket stand of 128 runs, Dravid saw the team through a damaging spell of fast bowling by Super Sub Farveez Maharoof towards the closing stages. Maharoof grabbed a career best 4-20 as he drove a wedge through the lower order to restrict the Indian juggernaut to some extent. Dravid brought up his 11th hundred with a majestic pull off Dilhara Fernando off the penultimate ball of the innings, his late flourish fetching India 50 runs from the last five overs. Gambhir, getting a nod for the first time in the seven-match series, which India have already sealed in their favour 4-0, set up the foundation with an enterprising knock that came off 97 balls and contained 13 fours and a six. The Indians, put in to bat after Sri Lankan captain Marvan Atapattu won the toss, went into the match without their key players — Sachin Tendulkar, Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh all of whom were rested for the inconsequential tie. Gambhir provided the hosts a rampaging start as he went on the offensive from the outset. Sehwag struck the first boundary of the innings, a cover drive in the very first over by Chaminda Vaas but soon his younger partner took over the striker’s mantle. South Africa announce team for India tour
Centurion, November 6 The 23-year-old took up off-spin bowling just two years ago, having entered first-class cricket for Eastern Province as a medium-pacer. Slow
left-armer Robin Peterson, who has taken just nine wickets in 21 one-day internationals, and Justin
Ontong, who bowls off and leg-breaks but has taken just eight wickets in 18 matches, are the other spinners in the 15-man squad announced on Sunday. The inclusion of a third spinner has cost top-order batsman Jacques Rudolph his place in the squad, with Ontong also a talented limited-overs batsman and speedy fielder. The South Africans will play a warm-up match in Hyderabad on November 14 before playing five one-day internationals between November 16 and 28. Team: Graeme Smith (captain), AB de

Lee, Bracken bowl Aussies to huge win
Brisbane, November 6 Lee finished with career-best Test figures of 5 for 30 and Bracken, playing his fourth Test, claimed 4 for 48 as the Australians routed the Caribbeans for 129 in just 49 overs. Australian skipper Ricky Ponting was declared the man of the match for centuries in both innings. Australia declared on their overnight total of 283 for two, leaving the West Indies with a record-breaking task of scoring 509 runs for victory. But they were nowhere near up to the task and capitulated once Brian Lara fell for 14 not long after lunch. The West Indies lost their last nine wickets for 76 runs as they collapsed in a spectacular fashion. Moments after the last West Indian wicket fell, rain began falling, which might have kept the game going into the fifth day tomorrow. Lee struck in the day’s eighth over, with Shane Warne taking a brilliant catch centimetres off the ground at first slip to dismiss Devon Smith for three. Chris Gayle belted Glenn McGrath for two sixes beyond long-off during an over in which he offered the Australian paceman a sharp return catch. Gayle fell to medium-pacer Shane Watson in the 18th over as he fended a short-pitched delivery to Warne at first slip for 33. Lara’s miserable run in Australia continued when he was splendidly caught by Matthew Hayden in gully. Lara’s 69-minute stay ended when he sparred at a swinging Bracken delivery and dropped his head in resignation as Hayden latched on to a diving two-handed catch. Lara raised his bat to the Gabba crowd as he left the field in acknowledgement that it would be his farewell Test appearance in Brisbane. The West Indian star was just 272 runs away from becoming Test cricket’s all-time leading run-scorer. Hall restricts Kiwis
Centurion, November 6 Wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, playing his 200th one-day international, played a major role in South Africa’s success in the field, equalling the national record with five catches. He also ran out Daniel Vettori first ball with a brilliant throw to the bowler's end. After the second ball dismissal of captain Stephen Fleming, caught behind off Shaun Pollock for a duck, top-scorer Lou Vincent and Nathan Astle steadied the innings with a stand of 75 from 80 deliveries. The introduction of Hall brought a reward in the 26th over when he had the in-form Scott Styris caught behind the wicket for 19. Hall next ended Vincent’s 76-ball innings of 66. Hall then sliced through Craig McMillan's defences with an off-cutter to have him lbw for nine and Vettori was run out off the next delivery. Brendon McCullum (27) and James Franklin (12) added 33 for the eighth wicket before Boucher dived high to his right to catch Franklin off Nel. McCullum also edged a catch to Boucher as Hall returned for a second spell, while Kyle Mills hit a four and a six in his fighting 19 to lift New Zealand past the 200 mark. Hall took four for 23 in 10 overs while Langeveldt took two for 36 from nine. Pakistan A pacer Mohammad Asif finished with seven for 62. He exploited a responsive pitch to trigger a dismal batting performance by England. East Zone beat Zimbabwe XI by an innings
Mumbai, November 6 The Zimbabweans, needing to score 207 to make East bat again, slumped to 189 all out on the third and penultimate day after starting the day at 2 without loss. Masakadza came to the crease at the fall of opener Terrence Duffin and remained unconquered on 103 after a 233-minute stay. There was none to support him at the other end as the rest of the batsmen succumbed to the spin duo of Shahbaz Nadeem and Sourash Lahiri just before tea. While Nadeem got through the top order with his left-arm orthodox slow bowling, off-spinner Lahiri sent back the tailenders.

Shock defeat for Kapur
Rayong (Thailand), November 6 Leading by one shot at the start of the 18th hole on the final day, Kapur needed only a par on the closing hole to win the title. He bogeyed it for a one-under 72 and tied with Chinarat, who then won on the second playoff on the 18th hole. He lost out on a place in the HSBC Tournament and a two-year exemption on the
Asian Tour. This was Kapur’s best finish of his career and his fifth top-10 finish in the last six starts. Change of guard likely in POA
Chandigarh, November 6 According to sources, the Indian Olympic Asssociation (IOA) has taken strong exception to the reported inaction on its letter of advice for holding POA elections, due since January 11 last. The POA has ceased to exist, as per a directive of the IOA. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa had been elected President and K.S. Sidhu Secretary General of the POA for three years in January 2002. Nine months have passed, but there has been no notification from the POA Secretary General for fresh elections. The Punjab team for the second Indo-Pak Punjab Games, to be held in Lahore from December 21, can take part only under the POA banner. An ad hoc committee may be constituted by the IOA in case POA office-bearers do not relinquish charge. |
HP go down 0-3 to Bihar
Thiruvananthapuram, November 6 Bihar asserted its supremacy from the start and scored in the 12th minute through Upendra Kumar. The early goal unsettled Himachal's defence as the Bihar forwards continued their attack. Manoj Kumar scored in the 81st minute and Asdhes Kumar netted in the 84th to complete the tally. Barring a few lapses in defence, the Bihar domination was complete in the second half also. Upendera Kumar and Asgar Ali excelled in the midfield and strikers Manoj Kumar and Awdhes Kumar with a steady steam of defence splitting passes. With this loss, Himachal Pradesh has bowed out of contention in the three-team cluster II. In their opening match, Himachal Pradesh lost to Delhi 0-7. Railways thrash Pondicherry
Kozhikode: Star players Ashim Biswas and Kasif Jamwal netted four and three goals, respectively, as formidable Indian Railways registered an emphatic 8-0 win over lowly Pondicherry in the Cluster IV preliminary league match of the 60th Santosh Trophy national football championship here on Sunday.
