Ten blast victims still battling for life
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 4
Twenty five out of the 41 injured in Saturday’s serial blasts are still undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital here with the condition of four of them showing deterioration.

Ten patients have been discharged, while another ten are battling for life in the ICU, a senior doctor said today.

“Ten patients are in critical stage, while condition of four of them is in deteriorating stage,” he said.

Altogether 41 blast victims were admitted in Safdarjung hospital. While ten of them have been discharged, five have succumbed to their injuries and one patient has left for another hospital.

Relatives of the victims are happy with the treatment.

“Treatment is satisfactory. Our patients are improving,” said Hiralal, whose daughter and granddaughter are undergoing treatment in this hospital.

However, relatives of a victim, Vandana claimed that no free medicine was provided to their patient.

The condition of DTC driver Kuldeep Singh, presently undergoing treatment in AIIMS, is improving, according to family sources. Surgery has been conducted on his one eye and one ear.

“I met him today and he said he was feeling better. I pray for his early recovery,” said Kuldeep’s wife Nigam.

The doctors at AIIMS said that Kuldeep Singh was now out of danger but would not be able to get back to his duty due to the eye injury.

It may be recalled that as soon as the bus reached near Govindpuri area, one of the passengers shouted from behind that there was a suspicious bag on board. Kuldeep Singh immediately stopped the bus and the passengers started rushing out of the bus.

One of his friends on board asked Kuldeep to first check whether it was a bomb or something else, and Kuldeep did it. Subsequently, Kuldeep shouted that it was really a bomb and picked up the bag and threw it outside the bus.

But the bomb suddenly went off, injuring him critically.

“If Kuldeep had not taken the risk, it could be have been a great disaster as the bus was on CNG fuel and a large number of passengers were still on board,” said a police official.

In appreciation of his heroic act, the DTC has taken Kuldeep on rolls. He was working on a contract basis so far. The bus conductor, Budh Prakash has been given an out of turn promotion. Both have also been rewarded with Rs 2 lakh by the government.

Meanwhile, in a rare gesture, a social worker in Walled City area of the Capital today contributed Rs 1 lakh for the victims of the Delhi bomb blasts and Jammu and Kashmir earthquake by curtailing expenses for Id festivities.

Residents protest gas shortage, block road
Bijendra Ahlawat
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, November 4
The alleged misuse, short supply and blackmarketing of the cooking gas (LPG) in the city and nearby areas, have forced the people to come out on the road and register their protest against the inconvenience caused to the consumers.

Over a hundred residents of the NH-I and NH-II areas of the NIT here blocked a main road for more than an hour as a mark of protest.

They demanded strict action against the gas supply agency of the area for not supplying cylinders on time and for its alleged blackmarketing.

The roadblock started around 10 in the morning and continued for about an hour.

It was lifted only after the intervention of the DSP who assured action in this regard.

It was learnt that the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) has asked the Food and Supply department to conduct an enquiry into the complaints of the consumers. The gas agency owner closed down the shop during the agitation, said one Mr Mohan, who was among the protestors.

Though this was the first time that the consumers had come out on the road, it is stated that the problem of gas supply had been there for past two months.

Several residents had spoken to the officials concerned about the alleged delay in supply and blackmarketing of the LPG in the district.

While the officials deny that there was any shortage, it is claimed that the problem could be at the distribution end. Those affected could lodge their complaint accordingly, the officials make it clear.

An official claimed that there was no short supply of the LPG in the city and the district at present. The district has around 31 LPG distribution outlets (supply agencies) of various companies. Though the authorities concerned keep issuing guidelines regarding various complaints, including the problem of supply of underweight cylinders, the grievance is still not redressed as the complaints keep pouring in. A consumer complained recently that a cylinder supplied to him lasted only a couple of days.

“There are many people expert in taking out the gas from a cylinder while it is on the way from the godown to the consumer and it is difficult to detect such a theft as they put the plastic seal back again. There are a number of consumers who do not go in for weighing the cylinder before delivery,” laments Mr K.L. Gera, a social activist here. He said the oil companies should devise some method to check this activity and put a seal which cannot be tampered with.

A few months ago, a consumer even found water in the cylinder supplied to him at Palwal town in the district, pointed out the social activist.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested a person in Ballabhgarh town in connection with the alleged blackmarketing of LPG cylinders. A stock of about 32 cylinders has been recovered from him. Two persons, including owner of a gas agency, have been booked in this regard.

With another death, dengue dread increases
Parmindar Singh

Noida, November 4
With the death of Noida authority Project Engineer V. K. Sharma, yesterday, the dread of dengue has increased in the town. Despite a senior Noida officer having been a victim of the fatal disease, fogging has not been done. Also, no public awareness efforts seem to have been made by the Noida health authorities or the CMO to combat the scourge.

Mr Sharma, 46, breathed his last in Apollo Hospital at midnight yesterday where he was shifted from Noida’s Kailash Hospital when his condition became critical about a week ago. He was admitted to Kailash Hospital on October 21 after the detection of dengue symptoms. Mr Sharma is survived by two daughters and one son. Earlier, a few dengue deaths occurred in New Ashok Nagar.

The Public Health Department officials do not seem inclined for a change in their style of working.

The common man wonders what is the idea of having a budget of crores if the basic cleanliness and hygienic conditions can’t be ensured.

Accountability to the public and transparency in its working still seem foreign to the set-up in Noida.

Mosquitoes of all categories are breeding in different sectors and waste is being dumped in the open. Even routine cleanliness is not being ensured.

Meanwhile, in spite of Health Department claims, dengue struck again in Ghaziabad as another youth succumbed to the disease at Noorpur Sahani village on the Meerut road.

Rakesh Kumar Singh, 28, was rushed to Narinder Mohan Hospital in Mohan Nagar with high fever.

He has died during treatment.

The Medical Superintendent of Mohan Nagar Hospital, Dr (Col) Uday Veer Singh, has confirmed that Rakesh Kumar Singh had died of dengue.

On investigation, dengue symptoms were found on his body. Suspected dengue patients are being admitted to Narinder Mohan Hospital almost daily, like many private hospitals in Noida, Ghaziabad and Delhi.

Prior to this, Mr Kalyan Singh, resident of Amar Khand in Indira Puram, and Prince Juneja of Shakti Khand-I had both died of dengue.

The Health Department has so far confirmed eight dengue deaths in the area. Dengue has, however, claimed 10 lives in Sahibabad so far.

A large number of patients admitted to private hospitals in Ghaziabad, Noida and Delhi are all suspected dengue patients, according to doctors.

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 4
Servants are often looked upon with suspicion in the capital, but one proved his loyalty by laying down his life to prevent a robbery by his master’s own relative here last evening.

Pyarelal (30) had worked in Srinivas’ house in Budh Vihar in north-west Delhi since childhood and was very close to the family.

Last evening, Srinivas and his wife had gone to a relative’s house in Palam area for a function there, police sources said.

As they planned to spend the night there, Srinivas asked his brother-in-law Sonu (22) to come and stay in his house.

According to police, Sonu invited Pyarelal for a drink in the night and the latter soon dozed off under the influence of alcohol.

Sonu then tried to break the lock of an almirah. Pyarelal woke up on hearing the noise and challenged Sonu.

At this, Sonu allegedly attacked Pyarelel and strangled him to death. He also received some injuries in the scuffle.

When Srinivas returned this morning, Sonu told him that two robbers had entered the house last night, strangulated Pyarelal, beat him up and escaped with Rs 20,000 and some jewellery.

However, inconsistencies soon emerged in his version upon which police sustained him to detailed questioning.

Sonu soon confessed that he had committed the murder and had been arrested, the sources said. Part of the looted money and ornaments had also been recovered from him, they added.

Capital to get a new Municipal Commissioner
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 4
Rakesh Mehta, probably the longest serving MCD Commissioner, has received transfer orders and is likely to be replaced by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Ashok Kumar.

“I received the letter a couple of days ago. I will be handing over charge on November 14,” Mehta said.

Denying that he had sought a transfer, the outgoing Municipal Commissioner described it as a “routine government procedure”. He said it was not proper for an official to occupy such an important and sensitive post for more than three years.

Mehta had occupied the post for about three-and-a-half years.

A 1975 batch IAS officer, Mehta is now likely to be made Principal Secretary, Urban Development, in Delhi Government.

Known for his innovative ideas for improving the civic amenities in the capital, the bureaucrat was having a tough time with the MCD House about a couple of months back passing a resolution that he should be removed from the post for alleged irregularities in the Ghazipur abattoir project.

“It was the most challenging job of my career so far. I had to deal with the woes of the 50 million odd people. It was indeed a tough job,” Mehta said.

“If Delhi is to become a global city, civic amenities have to measure up to the global standards, and that is a very, very uphill task,” he said.

Workshop directed to pay compensation for negligence
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 4
A Consumer Court here has ordered damages against an automobile workshop, which made a dent of Rs 17,000 in a customer’s pocket due to its negligence.

“The complainant had taken the car for a small purpose of charging the battery for Rs 80, but instead the workshop had created further defects for which he had to pay Rs 17,047,” Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (North) President K. K. Chopra and Members Neeru Mittal and S. C. Jain observed while ruling in favour of complainant Subhash Aggarwal.

Aggarwal had called the local workshop, M/S Gupta Service Station, on June 18, 2004, to check his car, a Hyundai Accent, as it had a starting problem, the complaint said. The mechanic checked the car and found the car battery low and took it back in order to have it charged.

The next day, the complainant called the service centre and was told that the car had developed further defects overnight and further repairs were called for. A day later, when the car was brought back, not only did Aggarwal find the car in a bad condition but was also forced to pay Rs 940 as “repair charges”.

However, on Aggarwal’s request, the service centre agreed to take the car to a different workshop for further repairs. For an entire week, the centre kept the car with them and towed it from one workshop to another in vain.

Finally, the complainant himself had to take the car to a registered service centre and get the repairs done.

Besides the repair costs, the Forum ordered the workshop to pay the complainant Rs 5,000 as compensation and Rs 1,000 towards litigation costs.
