20,000 Haryana employees to strike work today
Faridabad, September 28 Transport and banking services are also likely to be affected adversely as the Bank Employees Federation and the Haryana Roadways Workers Union have announced to participate in the strike. The Sarva Karamchari Sangh, Haryana (SKS), the leading staff organisation in the state and its affiliated bodies have been mobilising support for the strike. Prominent trade unions, including the CITU, AITUC, HMS, BSNL employees union and the local units of the Bank Employees and Officers Federation, have already taken up the cudgels. While these bodies have formed a Joint Trade Union Council for proper coordination on the issue, the council staged a procession in the town yesterday appealing to the local people, especially the private and government employees, to make the strike a complete success, said a council spokesperson. He said besides the state and the Central government staff, a large number of industrial workers in the city here had agreed to take part in the strike, which, he claimed, had been the only way to protest against the ‘lop-sided’ policies of both the Union and the state government. He said though the essential services like water, power and the emergency health services had been spared from the strike, there would be no bus of the state transport on road that day. All the bank employees would halt their work as part of the strike. It may be recalled that there are over one lakh workers in the industrial units here and their participation in the strike could affect the overall production here, which had been a prime industrial hub of the northern region. However, unions like INTUC and BMS have reportedly decided to keep off this strike. The president of the Faridabad Small Industries Association (FSIA), Mr Rajiv Chawla has described the proposed strike as unfortunate and uncalled-for. Claiming that though it may not have a direct impact on the overall production in the private sector, it could have an adverse impact on the overall economic process and it was the common man who would stand to lose from such an agitation. He said Faridabad had a daily industrial turnover worth about Rs 50 crore and any ‘bandh’ would certainly have a negative impact. The district president of the SKS, Mr Subhash Lamba, however, claimed that there had been a huge response from the employees in support of the strike. The main demands of the employees include a ban on privatisation, downsizing and retrenchment of the government staff, withdrawal of Electricity Bill, setting up of the Sixth Pay Commission, strict implementation of the labour laws, and restoration of the right to strike. |
Upgradation plan to add 500 beds to GTB Hospital
New Delhi, September 28 The hospital has 852 beds at present and with the addition of this proposed ward, the hospital will emerge as one of the biggest hospitals of the Capital. At present, the hospital is deemed to be the only
super-specialty hospital of the Trans-Yamuna area. The proposed ward will be completely tremor proof. According to the Medical Superintendent (MS) of the hospital, Dr. D. K. Srivastava, the construction work is likely to be started in November this year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2008. “A budget of Rs 38 crore has already been sanctioned for the purpose and there is no hindrance for the project,” he said. The upgradation plan was also carried out keeping in view the Commonwealth Games to be held in 2010, said another senior officer of the hospital. “As far as the availability of healthcare facilities during that period is concerned, there is no doubt that the focus area will be on East Delhi, as most of the events will be organised in this area and the participants will also reside in this area. Seeing this, the Health Department is laying emphasis on this hospital, besides Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, Kicharipur, ” he asserted. He also informed that the drive to make the hospital online was underway. “Registration of patients and the laboratory reports have already been computerised. We have complete database and anything related to these subjects can be searched within seconds. We are also toying with the idea of connecting every wards through a master computer to make our services timely and transparent,” he informed. |
Major fire averted at petrol pump in Gurgaon
Gurgaon, September 28 At around 5:45 pm, a petrol tanker was unloading petrol at M/s Karan Petrol Pump at MG Road, opposite to MRF Plaza mall. Suddenly, the tanker caught fire. The tanker driver, Mr Parmesh, who was standing nearby, rushed towards the vehicle, started it and took it 50 yards away from the petrol pump. He parked the burning tanker outside a puncture shop. As he was parking the vehicle, the compressor in the shop burst. A Maruti car and a motorcycle stationed nearby caught fire and were damaged completely. The fire-fighting team of MGF Plaza took their equipment from across the road and started extinguishing the blaze. The government fire tenders also reached the spot and controlled the fire. |
Administration hikes property rates in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad, September 28 The list issued after a meeting with the District Magistrate, the Additional DM (Finance & Revenue), the Stamp and Registration Office contains the proposed rates. Rates in areas like Indira Puram, Surya Nagar, Raj Nagar and Ram Prasth will be enhanced between Rs 4,000 and Rs 6,000 per sq metre. In other areas, a hike between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,500 had been proposed. Vivekananad Nagar was the only area where no hike in rates had been announced. In case of agricultural land of villages coming under the jurisdiction of the Nagar Nigam, the new proposed rates seem to shoot through the sky. In Mehrauli, the per acre rate of Rs 13 lakh at present was proposed to be almost doubled to Rs 25 lakh an acre. In Duhai, the Rs 15 lakh rate was being increased to Rs 20 lakh an acre. In Dasna, Shahpur, Bambhota and Duhai Heda, the rate between Rs 7 lakh to Rs 12 lakh was being hiked to Rs 35 lakh an acre. In Sadarpur village, the rate, at present between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, was proposed to be hiked to Rs 15 lakh. In Raispur and Irgal, the rate was increased from Rs 12 lakh to Rs 18 lakh per acre, in Morti from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 15 lakh and in Bhovpur village rates of farm land were being increased from Rs 3.20 lakh to Rs 15 Lakh. Sources in the Stamp Department said a fortnight’s time had been given for suggestions and objections. After considering them, the final sector rate lists, with amendments, if any, would be issued. After this, the registration of properties would be done strictly in accordance with the new rate list, the Assistant Stamp Commissioner said. |
Raped minor dies; finger of suspicion points at close relative
Faridabad, September 28 It is suspected that a close relative or a family member of the girl could be involved in the incident. Though the postmortem report is still awaited, the police have booked a case against unknown persons. According to information, the victim identified as Tahira, daughter of one Hazi Amil, a resident of Bichore village of Punhana subdivision of Mewat district, had allegedly been kidnapped and taken to Hodal where she was raped. It is learnt that the accused had tried to kill the girl by stabbing her in the neck. The accused dumped the girl in a pit near Godota Chowk in Hodal town, thinking that she had died. The girl was lying unconscious when some morning walkers saw her. She was rushed to a nearby hospital by the police, but the doctors could not save her. |
DUTA chief for recall of HC order on ballot re-counting
New Delhi, September 28 Sharma’s application came up for hearing before Justice Vikramajit Sen, who wanted Election Officer Prof S N Singh to explain the counting procedure. As Singh was not available, the court adjourned the case to September 30. Sharma has contended that the court could not have summoned the ballots for re-examination by rival candidates. His argument was opposed by Siddiqui’s counsel Sarabjit Sharma, who said there was nothing wrong in the order. Earlier, the court had asked DUTA to place ballots cast for the post of President before a Joint Registrar of the court for examination by Siddiqui in Sharma’s presence today. The court is hearing Siddiqui’s petition seeking quashing of Sharma’s election as DUTA President in the August 31 polls. Siddiqui, who was defeated in the DUTA polls by a margin of 12 votes by Sharma, alleged that many of his votes were illegally declared invalid by the Election Officer after certain last-minute changes in the counting rules. DUTA counsel has been opposing the petition, saying it was not maintainable as disputed questions of facts could not be raised in writ jurisdiction, particularly because DUTA was not a state within the meaning of Article 12 of Constitution. In his petition filed through counsel Sarabjit Sharma, Siddiqui has demanded quashing of Sharma’s election to the post of DUTA President and recounting of ballots under the supervision of the High Court. |
Govt for putting WB loan for water project on hold
New Delhi, September 28 The decision has been taken as the WB project has been referred to the Planning Commission for its recommendations. In a letter to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday, Delhi Government requested that the application for receiving loan from the World Bank be put on hold as the projected timelines of the scheme were likely to get affected. Noting that Delhi Jal Board (DJB) had sent the project to the Planning Commission for its expert advice and the water authority was also planning consultations with stakeholders as well as experts, the letter sent by Joint Secretary (Urban Development) Manoj Kumar said, “The loan processing exercise be kept pending for such a decision”. Singh said that only after the consultation process is over and the DJB has taken a decision in the matter, the need for funds or loan, if any, would be firmed up and intimated. Delhi Jal Board (DJB) CEO Rakesh Mohan had earlier written to Delhi Government requesting that the Centre be asked to put on hold the loan application. “We have sought advice from the Planning Commission. Let them come back with it,” Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters when asked about the status of the 24x7 project, which is meant for non-stop supply of water in some areas of the capital, in the light of reports that it had been shelved. |
Concern over decline in student activism on campus
New Delhi, September 28 “Having studied the voting patterns of the last few years, we noticed that ever since the Delhi University administration discontinued having students’ representatives on the AC there has been a decline in the voter turnout,” said Kuntal Krishna, spokesperson of the National Students Union of India (NSUI). Pressing for the resumption of students’ representation in the AC, youth organisations assert that their presence at the decision-making platforms works in the favour of the students. There is a provision for having five students, two each from postgraduate and undergraduate levels and one researcher, to represent the students in the AC. “Earlier, when students, who were toppers in their respective departments, were chosen through an electoral college to represent the students in the AC, they could press for their demands and put forth their views,” said the former DUTA president, Dr S. S. Rathi. “The practice was discontinued abruptly during Prof. Deepak Nayar’s tenure as the Vice Chancellor. The electoral college was not formed, consequently the students have no say in decisions pertaining to their welfare,” he said. Citing how representation has met the concerns of the students, Krishna said, “when students had a voice at these meetings, the requirements of the students were put forth by their representatives.”. While the administration is yet to announce its decision to resume representation, the Vice Chancellor, Dr Deepak Pental, on his part has welcomed the participation of the students. “I see nothing wrong in it (representation in AC), students should be involved in an organised way so that they feel a part of the structure,” Dr Pental said. |
3 Deputy Superintendents dismissed in Tihar sting operation

A private television channel had recently broadcast the footage showing the officials, including an Assistant Superintendent, three Head Wardens and six Wardens, purportedly accepting bribes. They had been immediately suspended pending inquiry into the matter. |
HC notices to India Today, Outlook
New Delhi, September 28 A division bench of Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Rekha Sharma also issued notices to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Press Council of India (PCI) to file their replies by December 7 as the articles allegedly influenced young minds. Counsel Varun Goswami appearing for petitioner Supriya Aggrawal sought court’s direction to the Ministry and PCI to formulate a policy to curb such sexually explicit, obscene, lewd and objectionable articles in newspapers and magazines. The Petition also sought direction not to sell any more copies of the issues. Mr Goswami alleged that in the cover story “Sex and Single Women” of India Today and “Women buy men sex, first hand encounters with Indian Gigolos and nationwide survey for forbidden sex” of Outlook, the Editors and Correspondents of the respective magazines had exceeded all restraints, limits and barriers of civility, responsibility towards the citizens. The stories under the garb of statistical survey were loaded with explicit, lewd, cheap and indecent expressions and details, which were absolutely unnecessary, said the petition. “Enquiries revealed that publication of pornographic, adult and sexually-explicit articles are prohibited in India and it has been so prohibited keeping in mind, the typical and traditional values and ethos of the Indian society,” it said. |
