Delhi, Haryana CM meet to resolve issues
New Delhi, July 25 Regarding the pending dues, it was decided that a committee will be set up to look into the matter. On her part, Ms Sheila Dikshit assured Mr Hooda that all possible long-term and short-term measures would be taken to bring down the pollution level in Yamuna. She also said that Delhi was equally concerned about the pollution and has already invited experts from foreign countries to study the problem and come up with remedial measures. After the meeting both Ms Dikshit and Mr Hooda told the reporters that the meeting was held in a cordial manner and issues would be sorted out amicably. On the issue of textile made ups it was decided that all matters pertaining to VAT would be taken up in Empowered Committee of Ministers. It was also decided that the states should try and arrive at a common solution. Both the Chief Ministers also emphasised on the need to have a common transport tax structure for vehicles plying in the NCR region. In this regard, Delhi Chief Secretary Mr S Reghunathan would convene a meeting of the concerned officers of the NCR states like Delhi, UP, Rajasthan and Haryana. Also the issue of land of Haryana Irrigation department taken over by the Delhi Government, DDA and MCD for various developmental schemes was discussed. It was decided that a meeting will be convened by the Principal Secretary (Urban Development), Delhi Government, in which all issues pertaining to the land of two governments will be resolved. Regarding Metro, Mr Hooda requested Ms Dikshit for extension of Metro line to IFFCO Chowk, Gurgaon. After the discussion, Ms Dikshit agreed in principle for a Metro line to Gurgaon subject to the approval of Group of Ministers. For the Gurgaon-Trinagar stretch of Integrated Rail-cum-Bus Transit System, which is about 30.53 kms, both the governments agreed to strongly take up the matter with the Planning Commission and Railway Board to expedite the approval. |
Child’s murder: Father cries for justice
Greater Noida, July 25 It may be recalled that the eight-year-old son of Ranveer Singh of Sirsa village had been murdered brutally on July 9. The police had arrested Brij Mohan, the 13-year-old son of Mukhtar Singh, after two days. The boy had been sent to jail. However, the villagers accuse the police of making up a false case. The panchayat of six villages called for an inquiry by a magistrate into the case. It held a tantric guilty of child’s murder and fined him Rs 6 lakh. Failing to get a fair deal from the senior police officers, Ranveer Singh, the victim’s father, has now complained to the Human Rights Commission, alleging that the local police had freed the real culprit, and instead, an innocent boy had been put in jail. He said the villagers have no hope of getting justice from the local police. Therefore, the case should
be probed by a district magistrate or an SDM and the guilty cops should be punished. Mukhtar Singh, father of the jailed boy, has also appealed to the Human Rights Commission. He has alleged that “the police had beaten up his innocent child mercilessly before sending him to jail. An independent agency should probe the matter”, he has implored. Meanwhile, a meeting of panchayats of 12 villages is being called to plan a further course of action in the matter. |
BJP demands CBI probe into beef seizure case
New Delhi, July 25 Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Subhash Arya claimed that due to political pressure, the FIR did not name the main accused – the complex owner, the transporter, the owner of (meat) consignment, the exporter – in
the case. “Despite the MCD Commissioner’s orders on June 22 to seal the storage premises and cancel its licence, till date it has not been done and the real culprits behind the transport of cow meat into the Capital have not even been named in the FIR, which is a mockery of the system of law,” he said. Demanding that stern action be taken against the owners, directors, partners and managers of the cold storages and suppliers of the cow meat, Mr Arya said instead of just naming the cold storage workers, the FIR should have carried the names of the “real culprits who were being shielded by a ruling party Councillor and others of the party by taking bribes running into crores”. He claimed that “Even the partners of the cold storages are being changed in the meantime to cover-up the matter and protect the
real culprits”. “‘We will soon meet the Police Commissioner and the Lt Governor in this regard to apprise them of the reality and demand a CBI probe into the matter which would expose the nexus which bypasses laws and was trying to shield the guilty,” the BJP leader said. He said even after the six cold storages were raided on April 30, following the BJP’s expose of the incident of cow slaughter through a Compact Disc in the House, no action was taken. Even after the June 12 laboratory report that five out of the six storages had kept cow meat, banned under the Delhi Act, the FIR was made against only those present and not those behind the crime, he added. “We want all the real accused to be arrested and the nexus of those behind the perpetrators and those shielding them exposed. Failure to take action against them reflected clear connivance of officials and traders,” Mr Arya said. |
HC nod to proceed with CEE admissions
New Delhi, July 25 Today’s verdict will bring relief to hundreds of students who had cleared the CEE, but owing to the allegations of a scam, were not sure whether the admission formalities would be allowed to proceed. Earlier this month, 33 students who had managed to figure among the top 50 ranks were found to have similar marks in all subjects. Following the revelation, the case was handed over to the CBI to conduct a probe. While the university went ahead with the counseling of the students, marking the first step of admission formalities, there were apprehensions that the exam might be cancelled. The 33 students involved in the scam were not allowed to attend the counseling, which was held on July 13. Parents and students had expressed concern that those “innocent” would have to pay a price, should the exams be conducted again. But with the court having ruled out a re examination, it is the end of a nightmare for these meritorious students. |
LG asks MCD to clear Pitampura of encroachments
New Delhi, July 25 He issued the instructions following an inspection of the locality along with the area MLA, Mr. Ravinder Bansal, Municipal Councillor, Mrs Nirdosh Sarin and representatives of residents welfare associations. The Municipal Commissioner, Mr Rakesh Mehta, Vice Chairman of the DDA, Mr. Madhukar Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of the area, Mr Manpreet Singh, Engineer-in-Chief Mr R. K. Meena, Director-in-Chief of Sanitation,

also present. During inspection, Lt. Governor freely interacted with people’s representatives and office bearers of the RWAs and heard their grievances. He issued instructions on the spot for redressal of their long-standing grievances. The RWAs were critical of active role of builders in the area. They pointed out that residential areas are being fast converted into commercial buildings. The Lt. Governor directed the MCD and the Delhi Police to be vigilant and ensure that the illegal constructions were put to an end with iron hand. He also planted saplings at Vashisht Park in Vaishali and the MCD school at UU-Block in Pitampura. He urged residents to carry out plantation at mass scale around their houses.
He assured RWAs all possible government help in making Delhi greener and cleaner city. |
Report on DSIDC’s ‘future role’ submitted
New Delhi, July 25 The report, submitted to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit last week, calls for radical reforms in the DSIDC for fashioning policies appropriate to the demands of the current situation, while providing sufficient reasons to review the charter of duties, working format and administration arrangements for improved future prospects of the organisation. Manufacturing and polluting industries need to move out of Delhi’s limits,
emphasises the report on ‘Redefining the Role of DSIDC’, while stating that services sector, because of its high literacy rate and which was a major contributor to the city’s Gross Domestic Produce, and non-polluting IT industries, were key to rapid development prospects and needed to be encouraged with injection of fresh capital and provision of appropriate autonomy. Stressing that a clear-cut description be made of industries to be permitted within Delhi’s precincts, the report says rationalisation of the functions of various departments of the Delhi government was important for this. However, the report categorically underlines that no radical change could come or was expected unless political commitment and direction was given to the topic. For this, it recommends an industrial board could be formed under the stewardship of the Chief Minister, which could provide directions to the functioning of the Department of Industry and DSIDC. |

An apology for a railway station
Faridabad, July 25 The station doesn’t even have a proper entrance gate, though it has access both from the Mathura Road and NIT side. A visitor has to inquire from the vendors the location of the platform’s main gate. To reach the platforms, one has to cross the railway tracks or climb an overbridge. “There is hardly any space to walk up to the platforms. One may even miss the train as the passage to exit gates under the toll bridge has been occupied by the vendors, resulting in a chaos during the peak hours,” claimed Anil Kumar, a daily commuter. He said the passage to the main platform is ‘kutcha’ and is quite narrow due to encroachments. One could also slip while rushing to the station. According to Mandhir, another commuter, this station is a slum of sorts with no hygiene. The place under the bridge has a ‘subzi mandi’, fruit market and makeshift restaurants. “Though there is an overbridge to cross the tracks, the majority of the people prefer to cross the tracks on foot,” said Neeraj, a resident of the NIT area. He said the open drain along the spot has been choked, making the whole area stink. Crossing the tracks on foot results in fatal accidents each year. Mr K.L. Gera, a social activist here, claimed that the station is a classic example of mismanagement of the authorities. He demanded the removal of all the encroachments and steps to overhaul the looks of the station. |
Legal awareness camps to be held in Faridabad’s rural areas
Faridabad, July 25 Stating this, the Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary of the Tribunal, Mrs Anita Dahiya, said that the first camp of this series was held at Amipur village in the district. Charan Singh Rawat and Ramesh Chand Nagar, advocates, told the gathering in this camp about the Acts related to child marriage, Muslim Women Safety Act and the Special Marriage Act. She announced that the second camp would be held in Alipur village on July 31 at 11 am, in which advocates Pramod Goyal and Mrs Neena Sharma would be briefing people about the Act on child marriage. It may be recalled that the child marriage
is still prevalent, especially in the poor and uneducated families in the
rural areas. The third camp in this connection will be held in Alampur village on August 7, in which Mahesh Dagar and Sanjiv Tewatia would inform people about the Family Court Act. The other camps would be in Bhaskola on August 14; Badarpur Saidh on August 21; and Baroli village on August 28. According to the Tribunal, the villagers would also be informed

‘Brave’ Harry formally identifies
sister’s killer
New Delhi, July 25 Additional Sessions Judge Asha Menon recorded the evidence of Harry, recipient of the prestigious Sanjay Chopra award for bravery from the President earlier this year, his mother Rajni Choudhury and a witness Arvinder Pal Singh. Harry had earlier come face-to-face with his 15-year-old sister Ritika’s ‘obsessed lover’ and alleged killer Mangal Singh in the court on July 6 for the first time after the incident a year ago. Harry told the court that he and his sister were on their way to school from their Paschim Vihar residence in a rickshaw on July 26 last year when the accused intercepted them on a motorcycle. The boy said the accused asked Ritika to accompany him, which she refused. He then pulled her hand screaming “if you are not mine you cannot become anyone else’s” and took out a knife, the counsel said. Harry said he then pounced on the accused catching his knife and fought with him till he was badly wounded. Before he fell unconscious he had thrown away the keys of the attacker’s bike to prevent him from escaping. By then the accused had stabbed Ritika 15 times following which she died on the spot. |
‘Allow markets to operate pre-paid auto booths’
New Delhi, July 25 In a representation to the NCT of Delhi, the industry chamber noted that the Delhi government had done well by allowing commercial establishments to remain open till 11 pm and eateries till midnight, but noted that unavailability of public transport after 10 pm and harassment by auto drivers were undermining the city’s efforts to attract more people to shop late in the night. “Reducing constant harassment of general public by auto drivers and their inability to avail of affordable transportation late in the night can effectively be taken care of by letting the market associations run and operate pre-paid auto booths. The commercial viability of such a move to the market associations would guarantee their operational efficiency,” it noted in the representation. Such a measure has become imperative till such time as the state government issued broad guidelines to enable public transport including buses and the metro system to remain operational well beyond 10 pm. “It would significantly benefit the large number of general public, who due to summer months, prefer to move out and shop and dine late into the evenings,”
it added. |
