Hundreds of BJP workers were arrested by the police today while they were trying to gherao the Delhi Chief Minister Ms Sheila Dikshit on the issue of power tariff hike in the Capital.

Earlier the BJP workers had announced that they would organize a march from Shahidi Park-Delhi Gate-New Secretariat to gherao Ms Dikshit.

Addressing the workers, Delhi BJP President Dr Harsh Vardhan thanked the general public for their cooperation in the march. He also suggested to the general public, voluntary organizations, Resident Welfare Associations and social organizations to protest against the tariff hike by not paying electricity bills till it is withdrawn.

The Delhi Government had announced a hike in power tariff in the Capital on July 7 with an average increase of 6.6 per cent.

Under the hike, domestic consumers will have to pay 10 per cent more for electric consumption, non-domestic consumers 4.9 per cent and industrial consumers 5.2 per cent more over existing rates. The worst hit by the new tariff are agricultural consumers who will have to shell out 19.8 per cent more money for power.

The DERC had earlier recommended the Delhi Government to increase the power tariff from July 1, but the state government did not implement the hike due to several reasons, including political compulsions.

The hike comes into effect from July 15.

DCE team works on dream car
Smriti Kak Ramachandran
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 15
Racing cars are a part of every little boy’s fantasy. While for most it remains just that, there are a few who actually get to see their dream machine turn into reality.

Take for instance the car made this year by a group of students from Delhi College of Engineering, which was recently taken to the formula Student Competition held in the United Kingdom. The car with a Royal Enfield 500cc engine won the boys accolades and is already being worked upon for next year’s competition.

“The formula Student Competition is a spin off of the Formula SAE competition held in Michigan every year. Formula Student Competition involves students in designing and fabricating single seater formula style racecars, which are then assessed by the top technical people in the automotive industry,” points out Varun Kapoor, a student of Mechanical Engineering who was also the leader of the team.

The competition, being more than a mere inter-collegiate event, is a platform for each representing team to showcase their technical expertise and engineering prowess.

“The whole exercise involves doing the best in the given time and resources. The participating universities and students become the ambassadors of the nations they belong to, so it eventually become a matter of national pride and international glory,” adds Varun.

Formula Student Competition provides real world engineering experiences and problems to students. Team work, budgets, design constraints and communication with suppliers are just a few challenges that the students experience. These skills are invaluable to industry and the students continuously challenge their limits.

“For last three years, we have been the only team from India and in fact, among the very few teams from the whole of Asia to take part in this engineering competition. We were representing not only Delhi College of Engineering, but also our country and there we were lovingly known as Delhi” says Varun.

For the 15 members of the team who worked on the machine, it was also an opportunity to interact with the who’s who of the automobile industry. “We got to meet the top boss of Ferrari, which was an experience we could not even think of. We were provided global exposure that helped us evaluate ourselves vis-à-vis the world. There is an immense scope for learning and improving every time,” he added.

Talking about the car, Kapoor said this year’s version was a major improvement over the last year since the team tried a new engine, a Royal Enfield 500cc. “This choice was made keeping in mind the technical assistance and the spare parts that are easily available locally. The suspension design was completely new and was complemented by custom made coil over oil dampers. The team also achieved overall weight reduction and the design of the cockpit was ergonomically efficient,” he pointed out.

Sponsored by Maruti, ONGC, Bharat Petroleum, AGM, VG Industries and KBX the car also taught the boys “teamwork and management”, says Varun. “This project gave us an on the job insight into the various aspects of real-life group working.”

And even as the team is thrilled to be among the very few to achieve such a feat, preparations for a better performance next year are already underway.

Tribune News Service

Faridabad, July 15
In a rare kind of operation, doctors of a leading private medical institute here have been able to save the life of a 71-year-old man suffering from heart blockade due to a tumour.

The tumour, detected at the eleventh hour, was successfully removed by team of doctors led by Dr Adarsh Kopulla of Metro Heart Institute in Sector-16A here.

Stating this here today, the Director of the Institute, Dr. S.S. Bansal claimed that it was a unique kind of operation as patients suffering from tumour in their heart were quite rare, about one in a lakh persons.

He said the kin of the patient, identified as Nathi Ram, a resident of Dadasia village in the district, brought him in a critical condition on the night of July 10. His blood pressure had dipped down dangerously to around 40 and he was hardly able to breathe.

He said according to the history of the patient, he was being treated for bronchitis for the past year and the real cause of the disease could not be diagnosed till he was admitted here.

The Electrocardiograph test done by the doctors here found that upper left ventricle of the heart had been blocked by a tumour-like object and it had nearly stopped the pumping of the blood, leading to a major drop in his blood pressure.

According to Dr Adarsh Koppula, who performed the surgery, it took about 3 hours before the BP of the patient returned to normal and his life could be saved. He said a tumour weighing about 60 grams was removed from the heart and the patient had nearly recovered since then.

He claimed it was a rare surgery and only about 8 such operations had taken place at the All Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi in the past decade.

The Director of the Institute also claimed that being a poor patient, the hospital administration had relaxed the condition of depositing any advance amount or paying the full amount of the expenses of the operation.

He said the Institute would accept what ever the patient or his kin pay for this operation.

Gt Noida land set to be costlier than Noida’s
Parmindar Singh

Noida, July 15
While the land prices in Noida have touched the skies of late, experts feel that land in Greater Noida is set to be even costlier than Noida in near future.

According to builders, right now Greater Noida provides the best option for investments in land and property in the whole of NCR. Land in Greater Noida has registered a spurt in prices during the past two years.

Realtors feel Gurgaon is falling back due to infrastructural constraints, although it has the advantage of freehold.

The realtors and property developers attending Property and Interior Expo-2005 felt Greater Noida presented the best option for investment and sale and purchase in property these days. Overall planning in Greater Noida is considered far better. Credit is also being given to the Gautam Budh Nagar Expressway which has opened up new vistas for builders, developers as well as the general public.

The commissioning of DND flyover and now Gautam Budh Nagar Expressway has virtually made Noida and Greater Noida part of the national Capital as the distance between Greater Noida is much reduced and it is a smooth half-an-hour drive from South Delhi now.

Another factor that goes in favour of Greater Noida is its better ambience and unpolluted environment due to greenery in general and many green belts.

A majority of builders, however, still rate Noida as the number one option from the point of view of land prices. Noida is number one as far as the development of infrastructure is concerned, which is considered much better than that of Indirapuram or even Gurgaon.

Being part of Ghaziabad, Indirapuram suffers from bad planning, many realtors felt.

According to Eldeco’s Rohit Malik, one of the participants in Expo 2005, the flat prices in Noida range from Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,000 per sq. ft. while it is between Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,200 in Greater Noida and in Gurgaon, it is at Rs 2,000 per sq. ft.

Omaxe’s Mukesh Sharma said that the land rates of houses in Noida, Greater Noida and Gurgaon are at Rs 4,000, Rs 4,500, and Rs 2,200 per sq ft respectively.

A number of leading builders viz Attison, Supertack, Shiva Co-Operative Housing Society and Amarpalies and a number of banks had participated in the Expo-2005 organized by M/s Grey Cell Communication Noida. Lakhs of people visited the two-day display for a first-hand knowledge on property, designs, architecture, planning, etc.

DMRC suggests 3 routes to airport
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 15
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has suggested three routes to connect the airport of which one would be for air passengers and two for daily commuters.

The Civil Aviation Ministry wanted a straight connection between Connaught Place and the airport and the Delhi Government a connection through West and, or, South Delhi, sources said.

The straight route, connecting Connaught Place and the New Delhi railway station with the IGI airport, would be about 18 km long and trains on this line would be faster and run at 75-80 kmph, with a top speed of 130 kmph.

Air passengers using this route can check in and collect boarding pass for

the flight at the entry point to the metro train, which would also have special luggage coaches.

The underground line would have only four stations, Shanti Path, Moti Bagh, Rao Tularam Marg and Mahipalpur, and would be part of the privatisation plan of Delhi airport.

The other connections could come by extending the metro line from the Dwarka sub-city in south-west Delhi to the airport and, or, a branch from the Central Secretariat-Qutab Minar-Gurgaon line, passing through Vasant Kunj.

These connections would benefit Airport Authority of India and airline employees and security staff working at the airport.

While the daily commuter routes are likely to be taken up in Phase-III of the Delhi Metro, the straight route could be included in the Phase-II.

‘Reliance Infocomm committed fraud’
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 15
A consumer court has pulled up private telecom major Reliance Infocomm for charging customers for calls that never “materialised” and levying STD tariff on local calls, terming the actions as a “fraud” on consumers.

Awarding a compensation of Rs 2,500 to a consumer, who suffered due to the apathy of Reliance Infocomm, State Consumers Disputes Redressal Commission said: “No telephone service provider can be allowed to charge for the calls which have never materialised even after a ring of 10 to 15 seconds or charge STD rates for local calls.”

“It is shocking that the organisation or the provider of service as eminent and renowned as Reliance Infocomm has been indulged in such an unfair trade practice,” Commission President Justice J D Kapoor said, dismissing an appeal of private telecom operator.

“There may be customers who may wait for 30 seconds or so and if they are charged at STD tariff what else is it, if not a fraud or deceit practiced on the consumers,” the Commission observed.

A city consumer forum in an ex-parte order had directed Reliance Infocomm to revise the bills of its customer Yad Ram Sharma and pay the compensation on account of mental agony and harassment suffered by him.

Sharma in February, 2003 had subscribed to Reliance’s mobile phone service under the ‘Dhirubhai Ambani Pioneer Offer’ after he was allegedly lured by advertisements that promised users long distance (STD) calls at 40 paise a minute.

A protest was lodged by Sharma with the company for the defective hand-set and exorbitant bills of Rs 2,370 for the second quarter of 2003. On getting no effective response, he filed a complaint in a city consumer court, which directed revision of bill along with compensation.

MCD files FIR against beef-storing godowns
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 15
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has lodged a complaint with the police against five godowns in the Capital for allegedly storing beef.

Replying to a query made by a BJP representative in MCD’s standing committee regarding the alleged seizure of beef from cold storage godowns in the city, Municipal Commissioner Rakesh Mehta said the step was taken following a tip-off received by the civic body.

“The samples seized from six godowns in Keshav Puram were sent for testing to the Sri Ram Research Institute, and five of the six samples were beef,” Mehta said, adding the beef had been supplied from outside Delhi.

He pointed out that an FIR has been lodged at the Keshav Puram Police Station and an investigation has begun. MCD officials said the raids were conducted on April 30 and the report of the lab tests was received on June 12, while the FIR was lodged on July 11.

BJP councillors, however, accused the ruling Congress in the MCD and the police with trying to hush up the matter.

They also sought an explanation for the delay in taking action against the godowns.

Leader of the Opposition Subhash Arya demanded that the godowns be sealed and their licence withdrawn. “The MCD has dilly-dallied in the matter, and we believe that the Congress councillors and the police are colluding with the culprits,” Arya alleged.

He further said FIRs ought to have been lodged against the people who sent the beef, its transporters and also the people who did the packaging.
