ONGC to shell out Rs 2,876 cr for LPG,
New Delhi, July 15 The ONGC will pay Rs 2,876 crore, GAIL (India) Rs 153 crore and OIL Rs 220 crore to cover one-third of the about Rs 9,800 crore revenue loss Indian Oil Corp (IOC), BPCL and Hindustan Petroleum Corp suffered on selling fuel in the first quarter of the current fiscal, a senior official said. Of the Rs 3,249 crore contribution by upstream firms, the IOC would get around Rs 1,625 crore while BPCL and HPCL would get about Rs 810 crore each. “Till last year, upstream firms shared losses only on LPG and kerosene but this year they have been asked to foot even under-realisation on petrol and diesel,” the official said. The ONGC’s share in the informal subsidy sharing arrangement has risen more than 300 per cent — from Rs 797 crore in the first quarter of 2004-05 to Rs 2,876 crore this year. In 2004-05, the ONGC, GAIL and OIL had borne around Rs 5,900 crore of LPG and kerosene subsidy. GAIL, which had forked out Rs 1,137 crore in 2004-05 towards subsidy on kerosene and Rs 428 crore towards LPG in 2003-04, is being burdened less this fiscal as it does not produce kerosene and the cost of natural gas, which it uses to make LPG, has also gone up this fiscal. The official said the IOC, BPCL and HPCL together lost some Rs 4,800 crore on sale of domestic cooking gas (LPG) and kerosene for public distribution system in April-June quarter this fiscal. The under-realisation on petrol and diesel was about Rs 4,900 crore. The oil retailers are losing heavily on fuel sales as the government has not allowed them to raise domestic retail prices in line with the rise in cost of raw material.

Jet salutes jawan, links Siachen
New Delhi, July 15 Jet Airways' first chartered flight took off this morning after being inaugurated by Director-General (Operations) Lt-Gen P.K. Singh with its 90 soldiers on board. With this, the government for the first time also opened up the highly-sensitive region of the country to a private operator. After inaugurating the flight, General Singh said all domestic airlines were invited to operate the chartered flight to Thoise and among them Jet Airways was short- listed and was asked to operate since it met all terms and conditions. Meanwhile, reports reaching here said that at
Thoise, which is an Indian Air Force airfield, there was a festive mood to welcome the inaugural flight with bursting of crackers marking the ceremony. This facility, besides being a welfare measure, will also result in huge time saving in addition to savings of effort and money. As a result, troops would now be available for a longer period for operational duties besides it being a motivational factor. Earlier, for a soldier travelling from Barmer in Rajasthan, it used to take 10 to 15 days to reach either Jammu or Srinagar and then move forward to the glacier by road after acclimatisation. The Srinagar-Leh-Siachen route is not only arduous but also takes anything from 5 to 7 days...and that too if there are no road blockades en route. |

With this reduction, the top-end model Palio 1.2 litre ELX will now be available at Rs. 4.15 lakh,” the company said. The premium hatchback segment has seen competition hot up with the introduction of the 1.3-litre Suzuki Swift at a price range of around Rs 3.9 lakh for the base model and running up to Rs 4.85 lakh for the top-end.
