BJP continues to agitate against power tariff hike
New Delhi, July 19 In order to protest against the power tariff hike for the third time, a Mahila maha-panchayat was organised at Vellodrum Road by more than 40 prominent women organisations. They included Nishkam Sewa Samiti, Akhil Bharatiya Pehchan Manch, Abhilasha, Nari Kalyan Vahika, Pratibha, Bharatiya Parivartan Sansthan, Jana Sehyog Samiti, Anmol, Parivartan Sansthan, Sai Durgeshwari Dham, Himnad Sangh and Himalaya Parivar. In the maha-panchayat, it was unanimously decided that the power tariff hike by the Delhi Government was done in an unjust manner. It was also decided in the meeting that until the government reduces the power tariff, the women workers would continue to protest by showing black flags to Ms Dikshit. Addressing the maha-panchayat, Delhi BJP President Dr Harsh Vardhan alleged that Ms Dikshit has put heavy economic burden on the people of Delhi by conniving with the private power companies. He also said that after the privatisation in July 2002, the power tariff has been increased by about 30 per cent despite a huge profit made by the power companies. |
DDA proposes private participation in building projects
New Delhi, July 19 Participation of private builders in the DDA has been considered for the first time ever since the body was constituted to provide housing for the residents of the national Capital. The private developers would be asked to build 35 per cent flats in a dwelling unit for lower income groups or persons who can not be offered MIG and HIG flats. This scheme will be implemented first time in Delhi. The private builders will be asked to hand over the flats meant for lower income groups to the DDA. They would be asked to complete the units within a given time so that construction cost does not escalate. According to the Vice-Chairman, the private builders would have to take approval certificate from different agencies like DDA, MCD, NDMC, Delhi Fire Service. Before giving approval for a building, the DDA would find out whether provision of all civic services like sewers, drainage system, park, community hall, market, school, dispensary etc have been made in the plan. As far as group housing societies are concerned, the developers would be asked to have 10 per cent additional land to construct units for the downtrodden which will be at a little distance from MIG and HIG flats. They would have to pay for that also. This is being done keeping in the mind that service providers are not located too far away from residential areas. |
Gurgaon Health Officer caught taking a bribe
Gurgaon, July 19 Bureau this morning that the company had asked the Health Office for a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) in 2002. As the documents had some shortcomings, the NOC was not granted. It
was again applied for in March 2005. Dr Gulshan Arora, however, allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 for giving the NOC. He had been paid the money in March 2005, alleged the company official. However, Dr Arora had not given the certificate till yesterday. Instead, he demanded Rs 20,000 more for giving it, alleged Mr Verma. He further mentioned in his complaint that Dr Arora started harassing the company officials on one pretext or another for giving the certificate. Today Perfetti company officials gave Rs 20,000 more to Dr Arora in his official room in the Civil Hospital where he was attending to the patients in the morning. As already planned, a team led by Inspector Sittar Singh and Duty Magistrate Naib Tehsildar Balraj Singh Dangi raided the room and found Rs 20,000 in Dr Arora’s possession. He was arrested on the spot and taken to the Vigilance Bureau office. The State Vigilance Bureau has lodged an FIR under Section 7/13/49 of Corruption Act. Dr Arora would be produced in the district court tomorrow. |
Sale of plots on mere agreement prohibited
Greater Noida, July 19 In view of large-scale corruption and cheating of people who throng Tehsil offices to get NOC and sanction letters, it has been decided to issue only computerized letters. The system will be shortly introduced first in Dadri Tehsil, it is learnt. It may be mentioned that the powerful lobby of builders in the district have been selling plots to buyers and giving them possession on the basis of agreement only with a view to avoiding payment of stamp duty. Later, they would recover the full value of the plot through installments. Thus, the government was deprived of revenue running into crores of rupees annually. Now immediate registry of the plots proposed to be sold or bought has been made compulsory. Addl. District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Rajesh Kumar Yadav had told all the builders and property developers in a meeting yesterday that they would have to strictly abide by this decision. The Addl. DM also asked the builders to submit the detailed statements of all the land procured and plots sold from it on the basis of mere agreements with full particulars, viz. name, address etc of all the sellers of land and buyers of plots. Mr Yadav said complaints of service cess (bribes) are also received against the Tehsil employees for issuing character certificates, caste certificates, income and residential proof certificates. All certificates will henceforth be issued through a computerised process. Computers are being installed in all the three Tehsils – Sadar, Dadri and Javer – of the district, the Addl. DM said. The district administration has decided to introduce this system to try check corruption in Tehsil offices. |
Govt hikes compensation for crop loss
Faridabad, July 19 This was announced here today by the MLA from Ballabhgarh, Ms Sharda Rathaur. While the hike has been up to 50 per cent, the MLA said those farmers who suffer a damage from 26 to 50 per cent of their standing crops would be now entitled to a compensation of Rs 1,500 per acre. She said the compensation would be Rs 2,250 and Rs 3,000 per acre to those whose loss was from 51 to 75 per cent and Rs 3,000 to those whose loss was from 75 to 100 per cent. Claiming that Haryana was the top exporter of Basmati rice in the country, she said the decision of the state government to set up a special fund to provide loans to the landless labourers was pathbreaking. It is reported that over 12 lakh farmers in the state are likely to benefit from the reduction in the rate of interest as they would be asked to pay an interest of 10 per cent instead of 11 per cent on crop loans. All the applicants in this category would also get a rebate of one per cent on long-term loans, said an official spokesperson. It is added that the persons applying for a loan up to Rs 50,000 would now be liable to pay an interest of just 8 per cent, the lowest rate in this section. |
Judicial remand for man who killed wife, kids
New Delhi, July 19 Naveen Ahuja, a resident of Jagran

New Delhi, July 19 A team led by ACP Mehar Singh was constituted who got a tip-off that the two persons would come near CNG filling station, Ishwar Nagar, Mathura Road on July 18. The police laid a trap. At around 12 noon, two persons on a motorcycle (DL-6SM-3577) came to the designated spot. They were identified by the police informer and duly arrested. The police recovered 5 kg heroin from their possession. The police said that drug trafficking was the duo’s ‘family business’. Ashok Kumar is a ‘bad character’ (BC) of police station Ashok Vihar and was allegedly involved in six criminal cases out of which five pertained to the NDPS act. The other accused, Mahender Kumar, is a BC of police station Jama Masjid. He has 10 criminal cases registered against him. During interrogation, the police also got to know that the seized consignment of the heroin was received by the two arrested men from Mandsaur, a native of MP, and they were going to ‘retail’ it here. The value of the seized narcotics is estimated to be about Rs 7 crore in the international market. |
Upgradation of road and traffic infrastructure
New Delhi, July 19 As this area is going to see enormous activity during the games, it has been decided to speed up the work by making a time-bound programme to review the projects. While reviewing the status of these projects, Delhi PWD Minister Dr A K Walia informed that flyovers will be constructed at Road No 63, Road No 56 near ISBT, Anand Vihar, NH-24 near Ghazipur, Apsara Border on G T Road, Road No 68 level crossing and G T Road near Shyam Lal College. The RUBs will come up at Road No 58 and 64 at Jhilmil, Shastri Park and ITO Chungi. In addition to this, one clover leaf will be constructed at UP Link Road. The government has already called for tenders for constructing a flyover on Road No 63, which is likely to be opened in the last week of August, 2005. For RUB at Jhilmil, which will connect Road No 58 and 64, the proposal has been cleared by the DDA Sub-Committee and DDA Technical Committee. Dr Walia expressed hope that work on all these projects will be expedited in coordination with different agencies. |
Government college seats go a-begging in Faridabad
Faridabad, July 19 The announcement by the Higher Education department of the state to extend the last date of admission in the various courses points to the fact that a number of seats are still vacant in the colleges. The last date for admission to the colleges in Haryana is now July 26. According to reports, there are a number of seats of various undergraduate courses still lying vacant, though the last date of admissions was over by June 30. Against an intake capacity of about 420 students in the B.Sc. (Non-Medical) stream of the Government Nehru College here, only 105 students have taken admission so far, while as many as 315 seats have been lying vacant. In the BA-I course only, 276 seats have been filled up so far while about 264 are still vacant. Against an intake capacity of 160 seats of B.Com., the number of students has been around 118, leaving 42 seats vacant. As many as 25 seats in the B.Sc (Medical), 25 in B.A. (Eng. Hons) and 33 seats in B.A. (History) are still to be filled up in this college. According to college sources, one of the main reasons for the vacancy here has been the reservation made for certain categories of students. It is stated that while 20 and 27 per cent seats are reserved for the SC and BC categories, about 83 seats meant for these have been lying vacant as the number of applicants has been quite low. In the Government College for Woman here, about 107 and 54 seats are lying vacant for the B.A. and B.Com. courses respectively. It is stated that the shortage of teaching staff and the lack of professional and job-oriented courses in the government colleges have been the main causes for the low number of admission seekers in such institutes. According to Mr O.P.Sharma, president of the Haryana Abhibhawak Ekta Manch, it is strange that the colleges in neighboring Delhi have been overflowed with admission seekers every year, whereas the number of applicants here has been so low. |
Child marriages bane of slums in Faridabad, administration helpless
Faridabad, July 19 The district authorities claimed about a month ago that it had stopped marriages of half a dozen minors by intervening on time. On Saturday, a person working as a watchman in Sector-21 here was about to marry off his 13-year-old daughter. Even the marriage party had also arrived, but a team of officials, including the SDM and some policemen reached the venue and asked the girl’s father to stop the wedding. It seems that someone had lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner, Mrs G. Anupama, and she asked the officials concerned to stop the wedding. However, the problem is deep-rooted. Even NGOs like Shakti Vahini, working for many years to check trafficking in girls, have expressed dissatisfaction over the manner in which such issues are handled by the district administration. |

Diarrhoea stalks Noida slums
Noida, July 19 About 20 patients have been admitted to the government hospital alone. Children and aged people quickly fall prey to diarrhoea, doctors cautioned. Villages around Noida like Nithari, Agahpur, Harola and slums in Sector 8 and 9 have a sizeable number of people who are down with diarrhoea. And most of the patients in the hospitals are also from these areas. According to Dr A.K. Dhawan of government hospital, chances of diarrhoea increase after the rains. The main culprit is polluted drinking water. Repeated loose motions and vomiting drain out water from the patients’ bodies. Dr Dhawan said that the patients should be given water with salt and sugar mixed in it. People should drink water after boiling it. They should avoid eating cut fruit and vegetables in the market. It is also better to avoid non-vegetarian stuff, the doctor advised. |
