Chandigarh, July 23
The Chief Secretary of Haryana, Mr G. Madhavan, has written the following letter in response to a story published in this paper on Saturday under the headline, “No invitation for promotee officers: weekly tea party at Chief Secretary’s residence”:

“I have read with amusement the above news item. I would have simply ignored it but for the fact that it contains statements which are mischievous and wholly untrue and any silence on my part may be construed as acceptance of what has been stated therein.”

“I have served in the state for the last 36 years and enjoy excellent rapport with officers of all services, be it IAS, IPS, IFS, HCS or other services, irrespective of their seniority. I have never thought in terms of an officer being a direct recruit or a promotee officer and it is mischievous to suggest otherwise. The fact is well known to all officers. I am comfortable with all my guests but a good host has to choose his guest list to ensure that the guests are comfortable with each other. Probably, the fact that I could not find time to meet your reporter yesterday because of my busy schedule prompted him to write this piece.”

The Tribune correspondent replies: Mr G. Madhavan’s letter confirms my story and I stand by it.
