Theft case: fifth accused held near Nepal border

The police today arrested the fifth accused in the major theft case that had taken place at the house of an industrialist-turned property dealer, Mr Anil Jain, in Gurdev Nagar here yesterday.

More bodies join agitating teachers

Charan Singh Sarabha, general secretary, Govt. School Teachers Union, Punjab, and State-Committee Member of Anti-Privatisation Adhyapak Morcha, Punjab, and other members of the district committee of the morcha, Jagmeet Singh Pakhowal, Charan Singh Tajpura and Satinder Singh Cheema, through a joint press note, condemned the irresponsible attitude of the Punjab Government towards some ETT teachers detained in the Central Jail, Ludhiana, which included 56 female teachers.

The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Baldev Singh Sodhi, has sentenced Pawan Kumar (47) of Kirpal Singh Nagar to 10-year rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor in 2001.

Manpreet Kaur, District Mahila Congress (rural) chief, her paramour Iqbal Singh, lab assistant, Government High School, Manuka, and his accomplices Jatinder Singh and Bunty, who were arrested yesterday in the murder case of Gurwinder Kaur have been remanded in police custody till July 25, today.

Tributes to freedom fighter
Ludhiana, July 23
A condolence meeting by freedom fighters and their successors of Punjab was held today in the city to mourn the death of Mr Surya Narayan, vice-president, All-India Freedom Fighters Organisation, on July 22 at Vijaywara, Andhra Pradesh. Mr Surya Narayan was imprisoned for more than 10 years during the British rule. Rich tributes were paid for his services to the Nation.

Seva Divas organised
Ludhiana, July 23
Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, Model Town, today celebrated birthday of Guru Harkrishan as seva divas. Volunteers of the circle were divided into several groups for going to hospitals, old age homes and nursing homes of the city to serve people.

Man booked under NDPS Act
Jagraon, July 23
Mohinder Pal of Raikot has been arrested for possessing 250 gm of opium and 2.5 kg of poppy husk. A case under section 15, 18, 60, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered.

Ludhiana, July 23
Parul Sareen of MA I (Economics) of SCD Government College has stood second in Panjab University and first in Ludhiana district by scoring 72.25 per cent (289 out of 400 marks). She owes her success to her grandfather, parents and teachers. “The head of the department and other teachers have always been helpful to all the students. I am always inspired by my grandfather, who was a lecturer in English.,” said Parul.

600 cadets attend NCC camp
Sahnewal, July 23
A total of 600 cadets from various schools and colleges of Ludhiana, Sangrur, Moga, Faridkot, Ferozpore and Abohar are participating in a combined annual training camp of the NCC being organised at Doraha. The camp, which will end on July 29, is being organised under the NCC group headquarters, Ludhiana. The camp is being organised to select cadets for the Republic Day camp, Sena camp and the annual training camp.

Clean sweep by Green Land School paddlers
Ludhiana, July 23
Hosts Green Land Senior Secondary School made a clean sweep wrapping up all four titles in the Ludhiana Sahodya School Complex Table Tennis Tournament 2005-06 which concluded here today. The players of the school gave a stupendous performance, clinching u-17 and u-19 titles in the boys’ as well as girls’ sections.

Housefed chief to honour kabaddi players in Canada
Ludhiana, July 23
The president of the All-India Bairagi Mahamandal and Chairman of Punjab Housefed Krishan Kumar Bawa yesterday left for Canada where he would honour the winners of the kabaddi tournament in the World Masters Games to be held in Edmonton city. He will also participate in several other cultural functions to be organised by members of Punjabi community there.

Haibowal school enters cricket tourney final
Ludhiana, July 23
Government Senior Secondary School, Haibowal Khurd, defeated Sarswati Modern Public School by 65 runs and entered the final of the second Sanjiv Kaushik Memorial Cricket League Tournament (u-16) being played at the Sarpanch Bachan Singh Academy ground at Balloke village, near Haibowal, here today.
