Within a few hours after the body was found, the police registered a case against her husband, Hamail, the main suspect in the case. His associate, Noor Alam, has also been booked. A case under Sections 302 and 201, IPC, has been registered against them. They are, however, absconding. The police said the couple had migrated to Ludhiana and rented a room in Grewal Colony a month ago. According to her landlord, the three had told him that they were going back to their village and had packed their things. At around 10 pm, they left the house for the railway station and her body was found from the plot in the morning. Her neighbours said Hamail used to suspect his wife and used to ask them to keep an eye on her. He often used to go to them and ask them whether anybody visited her or if she went to meet somebody. |

Another accused Rann Bahadur is at large and the hunt is on to nab him. Yesterday, the police had arrested four accused, including a former driver of the family, Shankar, his father Ram Bahadur, Sohan Lal and Prem Bahadur when they were going to Nepal in various buses after the incident. Addressing mediapersons here today, SSP Narinderpal Singh said the Jains had estimated the loss at around Rs 14.5 lakh. He added that the interrogation of Kailash, the family’s servant, proved fruitful as he had provided important clues to the police. Kailash was the one who had identified the voice of Shankar when he had called at Mr Jain’s house on the phone. He had enquired about Mr Jain and after knowing hung the phone. Kailash gave this important clue to the police and finally the entire case was solved. Mr Narinderpal Singh said that they were still questioning Kailash and were hopeful that rest of the amount would also be recovered. More bodies join agitating teachers
Ludhiana, July 23 Mr Sarabha expressed solidarity on behalf of the morcha with the agitation of un-employed ETT teachers demanding regular appointments against vacant posts. It was a pity that not even a single elementary teacher had been employed during the past two or three years and that had made the ETTU teachers to take extreme steps. The main reason was that the Punjab Government wanted to privatise the education and that would be the violation of the Constitution. Mr Sarabha said a state-level protest rally would be held in Chandigarh on July 26 on behalf of the morcha and they would support ETT teachers. Mr Sarabha had appealed to newly appointed Congress President Shamsher Singh Dullo to pay attention to their demands. The Moulder & Steel Worker’s Union has also decided to support the cause of ETT teachers. It feel that the attitude of the government is unsympathetic towards the ETT teachers. Union members are also going to join the protest rally to be held in Patiala tomorrow. |
A gleam of hope for railway vendors
Ludhiana, July 23 Tall and hefty middle-aged man, had been running the rehri till a couple of days ago at the local railway station. But following the closure of his rehri along with 118 other rehris, the place is out of business. A dark future is staring him and others in the face. He does not know what to do next and there are concern about future. He remembers the time when his father had started working as a vendor at the same spot about 35 years ago. When his father passed away, the responsibility of feeding the family fell on him. Never had he or any other vendor had imagined that they would be rendered out of business abruptly. There are many others like Neelu whose fathers had started the vending business decades ago. Even as vendors continued their dharna for the fourth day yesterday , a ray of hope has emerged for the vendors. The contractors have reportedly filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana Court asking for a reduction in the huge arrears which is likely to come up for hearing on July 27. A spokesman of the vendors union told Ludhiana Tribune that vendors were now optimistic of an early resumption of work following the contractors’ willingness to pay the huge arrears. According to reports reaching here, contractors at Dhuri railway station have already deposited their arrears and that stalls vending tea and snacks were functioning normally at the station. However, stalls at Ferozepur, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Phagwara, are lying closed. While many blame the railways for the sorry plight of the vendors rendered jobless by government orders to realise heavy arrears at the rate of 12 per cent commission with effect from the year 1999, others blame the contractors who did not deposit the arrears on time but chose to obtain a stay from the high court. Sources told this correspondent that most of the contractors are politically connected. They had just handed over their allotted stalls to vendors for hefty sums who had been only eking out a meagre living. The poor vendors are in no position to pay up the huge arrears running into more than Rs 1 crore. |

What is the bank doing to promote credit flow to small-scale industry?
We are planning to lower interest rates on loans to SMEs. Besides, efforts are on to sensitise employees and create a lending culture. In this region, for co-financing SSI clusters in Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana, we have signed an MoU with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI). And agricultural
sector? Against our target of Rs 400 crore of credit to the agricultural sector, we reached Rs 500 crore. This year, our target is to provide them Rs 560 crore. Not only existing borrowers, a large number of new accounts have also been registered. What are the measures you are taking to reduce NPAs? The current level of NPAs is Rs 2,500 crore. Efforts are on to reduce non-performing assets. To curb them, our emphasis is on good appraisal. Would the bank’s focus on retail continue? The retail segment cannot be ignored for it is a revenue generating area. We are emphasising on housing and education loans. It is only that the bank wants to lay focus on agriculture and small-scale industry as well. — Shveta Pathak |
