Compensate urban power consumers too: Surjewala
Kaithal, June 18 Describing the decision of the Haryana Government to waive outstanding power bills amounting to Rs 1,600 crore of farmers, a historic decision, Mr Surjewala said urban consumers should also be compensated as most of them had been paying bills regularly and a large number of them were poor and had helped in the installation of the Congress government in Haryana. Mr Surjewala said now the farmers should realise that only the Congress party was their true well wisher. He said Mr Chautala, who contested the 2000 Assembly elections in alliance with the BJP, had promised to waive the power bills of the farmers. He refused to fulfil his promise on coming to power. When the farmers reminded him about his promise and protested, they were sent to jails and many of them were shot dead by the police. He said then also the Congress organisation, Kisan–Khet Mazdoor Congress president Tejinder Mann and he himself had distributed cheques among the next kin of those farmers who had lost their lives in police firings. Mr Surjewala also complimented members of state Cabinet Committee, headed by the Finance Minister Birender Singh, which submitted its report in a very short time in spite of the death of two senior ministers Surender Singh and O.P. Jindal. Mr Surjewala said the government had also taken steps to ensure that the decision did not affect the financial health of power utilities. It had been decided that the government would pay Rs 200 crore per annum to the state power board. Mr Surjewala also demanded that more repairing workshops and transformer banks should be set up to repair and replace damaged transformers. Mr Dilbagh Mor, organising secretary, and Mr Kavi Raj Sharma, deputy state media advisor, HPCC, were also present on the occasion. |

Heat wave hits training
THE scorching heat with maximum temperature hovering around 43 °C has affected the ongoing training of as many as 80 sub-inspectors of police who were recruited by the previous state government.
The Superintendent of Police (Training), Mr Ranbir Sharma, told The Tribune that it had become almost impossible to carry outdoor training under the harsh weather conditions forcing him to send the trainees on a five-day leave, which under normal conditions is not permissible. He revealed that at least four trainees had suffered health problems. Medical officials had asked them for a complete rest for at least five days. A few other trainee SI’s had also complained of some health problems due to prevailing heat wave, he said. Therefore, after consultations with the senior officials of the police it was decided to send them on a five-day stationed leave hoping that the climate may change a little, giving them some respite from the heat, SP said.
