On the question of growing indiscipline in the BJP, Mr Vajpayee said: “Indiscipline is an infection and some people become its victims. But we will not tolerate it”. Hoteliers, touts fleecing tourists
Tribune News Service

Manali, June 2
The District Tourism Officer, Kulu, has received as many as four complaints against hoteliers and touts for overcharging and misbehaviour.

While the hoteliers, travel agents and tourism officials are engaged in the blame game, the touts are overcharging and even abusing tourists, who dare challenge them.

A Pondichery resident, Mr K. Panduranjan, alleged that Ankit Hotel, Manali, gave them a substandard room, instead of the one they had booked. “The tariff was Rs 600, but they charged me Rs 850 for two days, i.e. May 24-25. When I asked for the complaint book they refused,” he stated.

In the second case, Mr V.T. Sekar from Chennai alleged that Le Grand Hotel demanded Rs 3300 as room rent for the family, but when they bargained the hotel staff reduced the tariff to Rs 1100. “But when he checked out on May 27 and objected to bargaining, the staff laughed at me as I do not speak good Hindi. It was in bad taste,” he stated.

Mr Mukesh Jain, a senior executive with HDFC Bank from Mumbai, alleged that Snow Valley Hotel staff behaved rudely with the family when they checked out on May 24. “The hotel charged extra for a day and did not give them the bill worth Rs 10,655,”he alleged in the complaint.

The hoteliers blame the touts for getting the tourists into taking accommodation at expensive hotels. “They contact tourists at the entry point and start bargaining and take them to hotels, which pay them the maximum commission,” they revealed.

Earlier, the touts used to go to Mandi-Sundernagar to tap the tourist before they reached the destination.

The Manali Hoteliers’ Association (MHA) president, Mr Gautam Thakur, said the tout menace was a big problem. “We are worried over the problem as it brings bad name to the place. We are taking up the matter with the DTO,” he added.

The DTO, Kulu, Mr Kamal Chand, said they had challaned Le Grand Hotel after they received the complaint. “We have summoned them before the court next week. We will refund the amount charged extra from the tourists. The guilty hoteliers are punished under the HP Tourism Registration Act, as the hoteliers cannot overcharge the prescribed tariff,” he informed, adding that the hoteliers had adopted double standards in dealing with the tout problem. “They recommend them as guides and even issue them licences. But we have called a meeting of the MHA to solve the tout menace here next week,” he said.
