Technology leads police to mobile thieves

Chandigarh, June 2
Technology available with mobile telecom operators and the grit of a woman, Richa of Sector 20, who kept following up a case of her purse snatching, today helped the Chandigarh Police nab two youths.

  Daylight inferno at filling station
Injures employee, destroys oil tanker
Zirakpur, June 2
A major fire broke out at a diesel filling station located on the busy Kalka-Ambala highway, near Silver City, a housing colony, destroying an oil tanker and the office of the outlet besides leaving an employee injured this afternoon.

Husband of sarpanch, two others held on rape charge

Chandigarh, June 2
The police last night arrested three persons, including the husband of the sarpanch of Dhanas village here, and two panches of the village on the charge of raping a 29-year-old widow for over four months.

20 gamblers held from Sec 35 hotel
Rs 2.58 lakh recovered; manager held
Chandigarh, June 2
A group of 20 persons, including the woman manager of a hotel in Sector 35, were arrested this evening for gambling. A sum of Rs 2.58 lakh, the stakes placed by gamblers in game of cards, was recovered in the raid.

Deserted husband commits suicide

Stung by the desertion of his wife, a 35-year-old resident of Mani Majra hanged himself to death at his residence late last night.

Lengthy arguments at MC meeting

Long arguments among councillors marked the municipal council meeting held here today. Some councillors wanted that the proposal cleared by the House at its meeting held last month of demoting a clerk, Pardeep Kumar, who was allegedly involved in embezzlement, should be reconsidered by the House as they claimed that the punishment was given due to “personal differences”.

Body identified

The police today identified the badly decomposed body that was found in a ditch adjacent to a hotel on Tuesday morning. The deceased has been identified a Jasmeet Singh (22), aresident of Dhanoni village, near here.

Chandigarh cops donate blood
Chandigarh, June 2
The Chandigarh police today organised a blood donation camp at Police Lines, Sector 26, here. As many as 200 police officers and jawans of the Chandigarh police, including Mr Gaurav Yadav, SSP, Chandigarh Police donated blood in this camp, which was inaugurated by the UT, IGP, Mr Satish Chandra.

New meningitis case
Chandigarh, June 2
A fresh suspected case of meningococcal meningitis was detected at Baldwana village in Panchkula district. Ramesh Kumar (26) has been admitted with meningitis symptoms to the PGI here. Ramesh Kumar had high fever when he was taken to the hospital two days ago and doctors suspected that he was suffering from meningitis infection.

Bone density check-up camp
Chandigarh, June 2
More than 250 PU employees were examined at a health camp organised at Panjab University Health Centre today. Out of the total patients examined at the bone density check-up camp, 50 per cent of them were found suffering from osteoporosis and ostopenia.
