Fake police verification racket
busted, cop held

Ludhiana, June 2
A Punjab police head constable, posted at the SSP office Ludhiana, was today arrested indulging in for fake police verification racket in which he along with two others posed as CID policemen and ‘extorted’ money from people needing police verification for going abroad.

No clue in Jain murder case
Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 2
Though the local police has registered a murder case against unidentified persons for allegedly killing Mr Sham Sunder Jain, a former vice-president of the local Municipal Council whose body was found in a canal near here on May 4, the police could get no clue to the suspects as the matter had been complicated by some local leaders who had tried to take political mileage and settle scores with their rival on the basis of concocted stories.

Driver gets life term for killing cleaner
Ludhiana, June 2
A truck driver, Kuldeep Singh of Berpura village falling in Ambala district has been sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment for killing a cleaner, Jai Narain, in 1997. The accused has also been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 10,000.

Himanshu Gupta of Kundan Vidya Mandir, Civil Lines, has topped the district in the All-India Engineering Entrance ExaminatioN, held on May 8. He ranks 13th in Punjab. Calling for strict measures against sale and use of tobacco products, faculty members, students and others took a pledge against use of tobacco products at the ‘World No Tobacco Day’ celebrations at Dumra Auditorium Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, here on Tuesday.

DC orders steps to check cholera

The district administration here has invoked several provisions under the Punjab Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, thereby imposing restrictions on the sale of exposed food items, ice and ice candy, mineral water, cut fruits, over-ripe and under-ripe fruits, besides fixing accountability of supervisory officers for the quality of drinking water supply in the district.
