Chandigarh cops donate blood

Chandigarh, June 2
The Chandigarh police today organised a blood donation camp at Police Lines, Sector 26, here. As many as 200 police officers and jawans of the Chandigarh police, including Mr Gaurav Yadav, SSP, Chandigarh Police donated blood in this camp, which was inaugurated by the UT, IGP, Mr Satish Chandra.

DSP Police Lines, Mr B.D. Bector informed the mediapersons that it was the 31st blood donation camp organised by the police in the city. The blood donation camp was organised with the assistance of Department of Transfusion Medicines, PGI, Chandigarh. Dr R.R. Sharma, Dr Usha Rao and their team conducted the blood donation camp in the multi-purpose hall in Police Lines.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Satish Chandra, IGP, said that the basic job of the police was service of the society and blood donation was an important aspect of this service. He also congratulated the officers and jawans of the UT Police for showing motivation in serving the society.

New meningitis case

Chandigarh, June 2
A fresh suspected case of meningococcal meningitis was detected at Baldwana village in Panchkula district. Ramesh Kumar (26) has been admitted with meningitis symptoms to the PGI here. Ramesh Kumar had high fever when he was taken to the hospital two days ago and doctors suspected that he was suffering from meningitis infection.

The PGI authorities today contacted the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, about the new suspect case of meningitis . The test reports were yet to confirm meningococcal meningitis. TNS

Bone density check-up camp

Chandigarh, June 2
More than 250 PU employees were examined at a health camp organised at Panjab University Health Centre today. Out of the total patients examined at the bone density check-up camp, 50 per cent of them were found suffering from osteoporosis and ostopenia.

The camp was organised by the PU health centre in collaboration with the Nicolas Piramal India Limited. The next camp is scheduled for Saturday.

Doctors at the camp informed the patients that the cause of the disease was calcium deficiency in the body. Osteoporosis causes back pain, lethargy and weakness and frequent fractures are quite common in these patients, who need immediate calcium preparations to strengthen the bones.

The disease especially affects the elderly women and men both.

Ms K. Pathak, wife of Vice-Chancellor K.N. Pathak, inaugurated the camp the Dean University Instructions (DUI), Prof J.K. Gupta, was the chief guest.

Manipur advance in sepak takraw tourney

Manipur toppled Maharashtra in a one-sided tie (men section) by 21-7, 21-7 in the 16th Senior National Sepak Takraw Championship that commenced today at St. Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, here.

In the women’s section, Manipur again clinched the winner’s title beating Delhi at the score of 21-13, 22-18, 21-8, 21-6.

Ms Anu Chatrath, Mayor, was the guest of honour on the occasion and Mr Rupinder Singh Grewal, chairman of the school presided over.

Sepak Takraw Federation of India president Dr R.S. Dagar said 23 teams from different states and union territories were taking part.

Today’s results (Team championship) :

Men’s section: Manipur beat Maharashtra by 21-7. 21-7 Tamil Nadu beat West Bengal by 21-15, 20-22, 15-9,21-16, 21-15. Delhi beat UP by 18-21, 21-23, 20-22, 21-17, 15-11, 21-9,8-21, 16-14.

Manipur beat Chandigarh by 21-9, 21-10, 21-15, 21-3.

Women’s section: Manipur beat Delhi by 21-13, 21-18, 21-8, 21-6. Assam beat West Bengal by 14-21, 21-12, 15-8, 21-17, 25-24.

Andhra Pradesh beat Chandigarh by 21-11, 21-13, 21-2, 21-7.

Nagaland beat Orissa by 21-11, 21-15, 12-21, 7-21

Manipur beat Maharashtra by 21-9, 21-9, 21-11, 21-19.

Assam beat HP by 21-6, 21-14,21-14, 21-5.

Ashish stars in Satluj’s win

A superb knock of 70 runs by Ashish Sardana, who was ably supported by skipper Rishi Raj(50), helped Satluj Public School to edge out St. Xavier’s School in the first match of three-match friendship series played at Satluj Public School grounds, here today.

Shahdab played well for St Xavier’s and scored 72 n.o. for the losers.

Satluj Public School: 212 for 8 in 35 overs.

Ashish Sardana 70, Rishi Raj 50, Karan Khanna 35, Shahdab 3 for 35, Parveen 2 for 25.

St. Xavier’s School: 182 for 7 in 35 overs.

Tennis talent series from June 6

St Peter School, Sector 37, is hosting the All India Tennis Association Talent series tournament for boys and girls under 14 and 18 from June 6 to 9 under the aegis of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association.

The tournament director Wing Cdr. (Retd) Beant Singh said 140 enthusiasts from eight stateshave already confirmed their participation. The qualifying rounds will be played on June 4 and 5. The sign in for the qualifying rounds for boys and girls will be on June 3 between 12 noon and 2 pm at the school, here.

“The participants who have not sent their entries yet, are welcome to participate in the qualifying rounds and report on June 3,” Mr Baldev Singh, chief referee said.

ICLCL win by 139 runs

A magnificent bowling spell by left arm spinner Karan Goel, who bagged seven wickets, helped ICL Certifications Limited, Panchkula, to beat the United Cricket Academy of Delhi by 139 runs at the Sector 16 cricket stadium on the second day of the Chetan Sharma Sports Foundation Under-14 Cricket Tournament today.

ICLCL made 187 for 5 with the help of openers Vipul Chadha (60) and Manan Vohra (45). In reply the academy was United bundled out for 48 in 13.1 overs.

In another match Gaurav Bhatia slammed a strokeful and unbeaten 131 to help Surinder Khanna CA rout St Lawrence of Delhi by 126 runs. Batting first after winning the toss, the SKCA amassed 203 for 3 in allotted 25 overs. In reply, St Lawrence were bowled out 77 in 18.5 overs. Tejas Shoor (3 for 18), Shakshant (3 for 18) and Sourabh (2 for 25) were main wicket-takers for the SKCA.

In the third match, Chetan Sharma Academy beat Panchkula Cricket Academy by 35 runs.

The CCA scored 205 for 3 with Sawant missing century by just one run. Panchkula was dismissed for 170.

In another tie, DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, defeated Green Park Academy, Kanpur by 78 runs.

Earlier, offcials of both Kamal Talwar Cricket Academy, Delhi and DAV-8 had an altercation over allegations and counter allegations of fielding overage players. The Delhi officials raised doubts over five DAV-8 players and the DAV-8 officials raised finger against few players of the Kamal Talwar Academy.

Ist tie: ICLCL XI: 187 for 5 (Vipul Chadha 60, Manan Vohra 45,) beat United Cricket Academy , Delhi : 48 in 13.1 overs (Vikas 14, Harmeet 14, Karan Goel 1 for 7.

2nd tie:Surinder Khanna Cricket Academy, Delhi: 203 for 3 in 25 overs (Tarang Gupta 23, Gaurav Bhatia 131 not out, Sumant 31) beat St Lawrence, Delhi: 77 all out in 18.5 overs (Shivam 27, Mukand 14, Tejas Shoor 3 for 18, Shakshant 2 for 2, Sourabh 2 for 25).

IIIrd Tie: Chetan Cricket Academy: 205 for 3 in 25 overs (Sawant 99, Vishav 29, Sahil 27 not out) beat Panchkula Cricket Academy: 170 in 25 overs (Kapil 22, Pyanshu 46, Amanpreet 27, Tarun 2 for 35, Aditya 2 for 11).

IVth tie: DAV 171 for 2 in 25 overs (Anil Sihag 96 not out, Vishal Thind 35) bt Green Park Academy, Kanpur : 93 in 15 overs (Vishal Thind 3 for 19) by 78 runs.

U-22 cricket trials on June 4

Mohali, June 2
Trials to select under-22 cricket team for the Mohali Cricket Association will be held on June 4 at 3 p m at Punjab Cricket Association stadium here. The selected team will take part in the inter-district tournament organised by the PCA.

All players either studying or living in Mohali are eligible for the trials. The players must be less than 22 years of age as on September 1, 2005 and should bring a photocopy copy of the birth certificate.
