Taxi driver gets life imprisonment
Sukhdev Singh Killing NRI, raping victim's wife
Ludhiana, January 29
A taxi driver of Nabha, accused of robbing and killing a polio-stricken NRI near Doraha in February 2001, was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday. The driver was also held guilty for raping the victim’s wife and sentenced to a 10-year imprisonment.

Drive to clear pending land mutations
from Feb 1

Ludhiana, January 29
The district administration will launch a special campaign to clear all pending mutations regarding agricultural land from February 1 to 15. During this period, all mutations, which are pending for more than one month, would be cleared.

Parents anxious as admission to
schools closes

Ludhiana, January 29
With admission process in most of the schools here coming to an end, hundreds of parents are uncertain about the future of their children. All top schools in the city have already readied merit lists and waiting lists. While there are a limited number of seats available in various schools, the applicants are in thousands.

Cinema owner booked, bailed out

The Judicial Magistrate, Mr Jaspal Verma, today granted bail to the owner of Reikhy Cinema, Mr Manik Reikhy, its manager, Mr Nand Lal, and another employee in a case of showing an English movie after allegedly adding pornographic clips to it.

A Ludhiana cop, Inspector Rajinder Singh Sohal, has been awarded President’s Medal for exemplary services. He was given the medal on Republic Day in New Delhi.

3 Estate Office officials suspended
Mohali, January 29
The Chief Administrator, Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA), at the instance of the Punjab Minister for Housing and Urban Development yesterday suspended three officials of the Estate Office here, including an Assistant Estate Officer, Chet Ram. A Superintendent, Rajinder Singh, and an Assistant, Deepak Bansal, in the estate office have also been suspended.

The Focal Point police today arrested five persons while they were planning to commit a dacoity in the city. With their arrest, the police claimed to have solved a number of cases.

A 60-year-old man, Swaran Singh, committed suicide by hanging himself in his house in street No. 9 of Shimla Puri in the morning here today. Police sources said the man had a minor fight with his neighbour Bhuchar Kaur last evening who had accused him of practicing black magic.

Camp to identify disabled children
Government to provide learning aids
Ludhiana, January 29
Deputy Commissioner Anurag Verma today inspected the assessment camp for identification of disabled among children between 3-14 years at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Bharat Nagar Chowk. The camp was organised by the Education Department in collaboration with ALIMCO. The identified disabled children will be given assistive devices free of cost.

Maths teachers attend workshop

Students donate blood for thalassaemic kids
Ludhiana, January 29
More than 50 students and members of the staff donated blood at a blood donation camp organised at Lajpat Rai DAV College, Jagraon, by a team of doctors and technicians from the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) yesterday. The collected blood would be used for the welfare of thalassaemic children, registered with the hospital under treatment of Dr Parveen Sobti.
