3 jail guards suspended
Convict escapes from Patiala hospital

Ludhiana, January 30
The Ludhiana Central Jail authorities have suspended three jail guards on charges of dereliction of duty leading to the disappearance of a convict from Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, where he was undergoing treatment for an ailment for the past few weeks.

Ludhiana, January 30
The Government Pensioners Association has demanded more facilities for its members. It has appealed to the Finance Minister to incorporate some benefits for the retired persons in the ensuing Budget.

Dharna against poor drainage system
Khanna, January 30
Some residents here today staged a dharna in protest against the accumulation of sewer water outside their houses. Led by Ms Satwant Kaur, all residents of street number 6, Krishna Nagar, raised slogans against the Municipal Council, Khanna. They said everytime rain water accumulated on the main road here and other streets also.

BKU seeks action against urea hoarders
Ludhiana, January 30
The Bharti Kisan Union (BKU) today demanded strict action against hoarders and black marketers of urea as the same is not freely available in the open market these days.

PNB observes security awareness week

In order to enhance security consciousness among employees, Punjab National Bank (PNB) observed security awareness week from January 24 to 29. A wide range of activities were undertaken during the week in the entire state.

De-addiction camp ends
Ludhiana, January 30

A fortnight-long de-addiction camp organised by the Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle ere at Model Town, concluded today during which 25 addicts were treated.

Free ration distributed
Ludhiana, January 30

Manna Singh Manufacturers Association organised a free ration distribution function at Manna Singh Nagar here today. Mr Ramesh Takkar, chairman of the association, supervised the distribution of ration to 101 needy and widows.

The Anti-Corruption Council of India (ACCI) and National Consumer Awareness Group (NCAG) have asked Congress legislator and Chief Parliamentary Secretary of Punjab Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi to quit the post on moral grounds

One more held in extortion case
Khanna, January 30
Parmjit Singh, a member of the Manav Commando Force, involved in an extortion case, was arrested by the Khanna police yesterday. The police had seized three letterheads of the commando force from him. The accused was produced in the Court of Duty Magistrate K.K. Goel today who remanded him to police custody for two days.

Teachers burn effigy of Education Minister
Ludhiana, January 30
Teachers of the Un-employed Teacher Union, Punjab, assembled in local Chattar Singh Park to protest against the treatment given to unemployed teachers in Patiala on January 29 and burnt the effigy of the Education Minister, Mr Harnam Dass Johar, in front of his house in Model Town here today.

Guru Nanak Girls College holds annual function
Ludhiana, January 30
The annual prize distribution function of Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, was organised yesterday. Mr Jasjit Singh Randhawa, Minister for Co-operation, Punjab, was the chief guest. He was received and escorted by NCC cadets.

‘Life Hi to Hai’ to be staged today
Ludhiana, January 30
‘Life Hi To Hai,’ a play written by Krishan Chander and Arun Singh, will be staged at Guru Nanak Dev Bhavan tomorrow. The play will be a part of the second International Children’s Festival of Performing Arts to be held from January 31 to February 2.

Medical camps mark martyrs’ day
Ludhiana, January 30
To mark the death anniversary of the Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi, a free surgical camp began at a local hospital here today. The surgical camp would continue till February 20. As many as 20 patients would be operated upon, free of cost while another 150 patients could avail of surgical procedures at a heavily subsidised cost.

NGO to hold free dental camps
Ludhiana, January 30
The Aagaz Charitable Foundation, an NGO working for the cause of the downtrodden and weaker sections of society, will organise a series of free dental camps here. The first one in the series will be for women lodged in Central Jail on the Tajpur road here on February 1. This will be followed by another camp at Juvenile Cell in Simlapuri on February 2.

An unidentified male patient, about 30 years of age, was admitted to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here at midnight on February 21 in an unconscious state. The patient was presumed to have met with an accident near Raikot.

Mr Suresh Goyal, President Gobindgarh Educational and Social Welfare Trust, inspected a guard of honour and took the salute at an impressive march past and declared open the 13th Annual Athletic meet at the Gobindgarh Public School ground here today. Guests, parents and students were present on the occasion.
