Two shot dead on way to court in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad, September 27 The four were on their way to court in Ghaziabad in a white Maruti car. The police had recovered a local revolver and empties of the cartridges from the scene of crime. In this old dispute over land, three persons had lost their lives in the past also. Those killed today included Sunder, whose father and brother had been killed in this very feud, and Omi. Sunder was going to Ghaziabad court for a
hearing in the case this morning along with his companions when the assailants sprayed the car with bullets. Police Circle Officer, Loni, Sanjay Kumar and SO Loni police station, had rushed to the spot where people had placed the body in the middle of the road and jammed traffic. S.P. City Umesh Kumar Srivastava, SDM Sadar Rajesh Prakash and Circle Officer border Dinesh Kumar somehow managed to assuage the feelings of the people, clamouring for the arrest of the assailants. The double murder took place at about 9 am today. Jeetu and Jaikaran of
village Milk are having an old enmity over some land. Omi, Sunder, Anil and Kalu were going in a white Maruti car to Ghaziabad courts, when at Khajuri Pushta, the car was waved to a halt by a youth. As soon as it stopped, some criminals, who lay in wait, rained bullets on the occupants of the car. Sunder who tried to run to safety, was felled as he reached a ditch by a roadside. Half a dozen armed assailants then fled from the scene in vehicles, parked nearby. The police had rushed the wounded Omi, Sunder and Anil to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Shahdara. But Omi succumbed to his wounds on the way. Apart from the two, Vedpal from Jeetu side had been murdered a few months ago, and a case of murder is being heard in a Ghaziabad court. People from dozens of villages from the area had held a panchayat where oaths and affidavits were sworn, giving rise to the possibility that this bloody enmity might subside. But Jaikaran side had taken the enmity further by today’s murders. Omi, 35, belonged to Manipuri while Sunder, 35, and Vedpal are from village Milk only. His father Vedpal and brother Jeetu have already lost their lives in this bloody feud. |
‘Healthy India’ is new NSUI mantra
New Delhi, September 27 “We have been accused of showing up only during elections, we want to change that perspective as well as our own,” points out Reddy. Which means less agitation and more “concrete work”. “We have been guided by our party leader, Ms Sonia Gandhi, to shift our perspective from political to social issues,” adds National President Ashok Tanwar. And the paradigm shift entails, “setting up of self-help groups, right to information and special emphasis on health, especially in the BIMARU states, counselling students on how to earn while they learn and organising programmes of social relevance,” says Reddy. The “serious campaign”, aimed at highlighting the party’s concern for the society at large, is “an offshoot of our ideology and the right guidance,” claims NSUI spokesperson, Kuntal Krishna. Beginning with the colleges,
the NSUI, Kuntal claims, will “work towards self-realisation and not rely only on authorities or the government”. “We will organise self-help groups in all colleges for solving problems like shortage of books in the library. We can either pool in money or get the seniors to donate their old books to the library.” Tanwar adds, “There are scores of people in villages who are not aware of their rights. Even in cities some people find it hard to claim their dues. To solve these problems and create awareness about the policies of the government, we will invite volunteers to join us in the right to information forum.” Emphasis on the health of children, women and aged will be a part of the party’s campaign in the BIMARU states, “we will get doctors to help us with providing fee concessions and examining the ill who have been recommended by the NSUI block president. We will encourage the youth to help us set up a ‘healthy India’ fund wherein a corpus would be created to help in times of exigencies and also poor students who lose their lives for want of money”, explains Reddy. If cleaning the Ganga is on the agenda in Lucknow University, it is cleaning the campus in Jawaharlal Nehru University. “There will be weeklong programmes in universities like the one in JNU, to mark the birth anniversary of Gandhiji. We will have screenings of movies with a social theme, panel discussions and shram daan, where students will helps clean the campus,” says Tanwar. With emphasis being given to academic performance of aspiring party leaders, the NSUI claims, it is ushering in a change in political strategy. “To become a good student leader, you have to be a good student first,” points out Reddy. |

IMD chief gets anticipatory bail in sexual assault case
Tribune News Service
New Delhi, September 27 The court has also directed Srivastava to cooperate with police in its investigation. Justice B. N. Chaturvedi granted interim bail to Srivastava after his counsel Nishikant Pandey and former Additional Solicitor General K. K. Sood pointed out that Srivastava had been cooperating with the investigators while he was out on bail earlier from September 2 to September 23. On September 23, the trial court had decided not to extend his bail after the complainant objected. Mr Sood said Srivastava had already been medically examined and samples of his voice and handwriting had already been taken. He alleged that the FIR, lodged on basis of “bald allegations”, had been registered only because the complainant was a woman. “All allegations made by the complainant are made up as the facts tell a different story,” he said. The complainant and Srivastava had a “consensual relation” for about 10 years. The complainant had also received “many benefits, before and after her marriage,” and now for some reasons, had chosen to level allegations against Srivastava,” Mr Sood claimed. Bharti Yadav fails to appear in court
A witness in the Nitish Katara murder case, Ms Bharti Yadav, who is also the daughter of the former Rajya Sabha MP, Mr B. P. Yadav, failed to appear in the court today. The court had given Ms Bharti, the sister of the accused in the case, a final chance to appear in the court in connection with the case and avoid the execution of a non-bailable arrest warrant. The Additional Sessions Judge, J. M. Malik, however, deferred any decision on the execution of the warrant against Ms Bharti till the receipt of a recent Delhi High Court order in the case. The matter will now come up for hearing on October 1. The High Court had refused to allow Bharti’s plea for video conferencing to record evidence and had upheld the trial court’s order to issue NBWs against her. However, the trial court has not received the copy of the order. Ms Bharti has been evading the court since she was first summoned in April last. |
