Rickshaw puller behind NRI’s death
New Delhi, September 24 On December 29, 2003, the police had received information that one Kaushalya Devi, a senior citizen and an NRI, was lying in an unconscious condition in her house in Jangpura Extension, Hazrat Nizamuddin. The police took her to a nearby hospital, where she had been declared brought dead. During investigation, it was found that she was living alone in her house. She had been tied with a nylon cord and smothered to death. Two sons and two daughters, who were living in the US, had survived the victim. She was also residing in the US but used to visit India occasionally. During investigation, the police found that one rickshaw puller, who used to work for the deceased, was missing since her murder. The police traced the rickshaw puller’s mother-in-law, who would earn her livelihood by begging for alms in the Nizamuddin area. During interrogation, she revealed that the accused was a native of Chandosi (UP). It was further revealed that he was working with the famous magician P.V. Sarkar. After several raids in UP and Delhi, the accused was finally arrested from Narela area. During interrogation, he admitted that he was working for the deceased and drawing Rs 1,500 per month. He told the police that he was in dire need of money and she owed him his dues for the last 10 months. A day before the crime, he went to her house and asked her to pay him his dues amounting Rs 15,000. At this, she abused him and refused to pay the money. The next day he reached her house, pushed her on a sofa chair and tied her hands with a nylon cord. Thereafter, he allegedly smothered her to death and took away Rs 5,000 from her purse and also some other documents, which the police said were not of any use to the accused.
Girl, lover get life term for killing old flame
A Delhi Court today sentenced a boy and his girl friend to life imprisonment for killing the girl’s former boyfriend. Additional Sessions Judge J M Malik also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on the two convicts, Gurdeep Kaur and Amandeep, for killing Deepak Kapur by chopping off his head at an isolated spot near the parking lot of Talkatora Garden here. While Kaur, a student of Janki Devi
College, was a national level kabaddi player, Amandeep was a cyclist and had even participated in international cycling championships. Kapur’s headless body was discovered on March 9, 2003, by beat constable Bhagwan Sahay near the Talkatora Garden’s parking. Investigation led police to Kapur’s brother Yogesh, with whom he was running a shop in Connaught Place. Yogesh told the cops that on the fateful day Kapur had gone to meet two of his friends, Rakesh and Gaurav. Upon interrogation, Rakesh and Gaurav dislosed that Kapur was in love with Kaur and the duo used to meet in the garden. The trail led police to Kaur, who broke down and revealed the truth. She disclosed that ever since she fell out with Kapur, he used to disturb her and that she had requested Amandeep to help her get rid of him. As per plan, she called Kapur over to the garden, where Amandeep attacked him with a knife and chopped off his head, she told the police. |

Meerut, September 24 This has happened due to the deposition of the woman before the court. The whole drama dates back to 2002 when Anju of village Tera went to her sister’s house in Agarwal Mandi Tatiri where she fell in love with Narendra, a neighbour of her sister. Both Anju and Narendra eloped on July 4, 2002, and according to the defence lawyer P Bhardwaj, Anju returned after three days on July 7, 2002. Paradoxically, she then made a written complaint to the SP Baghpat and a case of rape under Section 376 IPC was registered against Narendra on July 26. She also stated that three of Narendra brothers beat her up. Narendra was arrested on July 26 and bailed out after three months. In October 2002, Narendra met Anju and they again fell in love. Both apologised to each other and married on November 13, 2002, in a local Arya Samaj Temple. But the matter had now reached the session court where Anju deposed before the court. According to her deposition, Narendra raped her before marriage and the sexual relationship was against her will. Anju was still with her husband on Thursday when the court awarded sentence to her husband. She broke down. She said that she had done this all as per the instructions of her sister. While Narendra told the mediapersons that Anju is still his wife and he loves her as before. He said that he will move the High Court against the verdict. |

Faridabad, September 24 He also directed the Chief Medical Officer to get a case booked against an RMP for wrong treatment of a minor girl of local AC Nagar here. Mr Chautala was here to preside over the monthly meeting of the District Grievances Committee at the MCF auditorium. A total of about 10 complaints were redressed at the meeting. According to the details, one Brijmohan of Nangla Enclave here had applied for a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh from the local branch of the Rural Development Bank. But he alleged in his complaint that the Land Valuation Officer (LVO) of the bank had demanded a bribe of Rs 15,000 for releasing the loan. The Chief Minister ordered suspension of the LVO release of the loan to the applicant. He also asked the authorities of the power department to immediately place under suspension the cashier of the Bijli Nigam, who had cheated one Harbhajan of the Panhera Kalan village in the payment of the bill. He directed the civil surgeon to take a strict action against the accused RMP doctor, whose treatment led to deterioration of the condition of one Anju, daughter of Dori Lal of AC Nagar, recently. A complaint in this regard had been put up by the victim’s father in the grievances meeting. The Pollution Board officials had to seal a generator set being used by a workshop owner in Jawahar Colony, after a resident identified as Amrik Singh had complained that the generator set had been causing both noise and air pollution and demanded to get it removed from the residential area. The Chief Minister in his order, asked the authorities concerned to issue notices for removal of all the factories or workshops, which had been functioning in the residential and non-conforming areas. Call girl racket busted; 8 held
New Delhi, September 24 Once the deal was struck, the pimp paraded the girls before the decoy. Train ticket racket
The Crime and Railway Branch of the Delhi Police today claims to have arrested four persons and seized forged tickets from them. After conducting raids at various places, the police noticed four persons who were selling fake tickets. The police arrested them and recovered 100 forged tickets from their possession, the police said. |
Rich heroin haul in Capital
New Delhi, September 24 The suspects have been identified as Gulzaman Khan, alias Gullu, Vijay Pal and Wasim. Acting on a tip-off that a drug consignment had arrived from Rajasthan, the sleuths spotted the suspect near Civil Lines. During a search, the police recovered 4 kg and 800 gram of heroin. During interrogation, the suspect disclosed his name as Gulzaman Khan, alias Gullu, and said that his son-in-law, Qayyum, had been manufacturing heroin in Chittor in Rajasthan. Gullu supplies the heroin to Rama Shankar in Jahangirpuri, who is involved in this racket for the last five years. He was also allegedly involved in a murder case. In another case, Vijaypal and Wasim were arrested from Bangla Sahib Gurdwara and one kg of heroin was recovered from them. Vijay and Wasim were running the racket with the help of a quack, Sumit, in Muradabad. The quack used to ask them to supply heroin to his contact in Connaught Place. A team of the Narcotics Cell has been sent to arrest the quack.
Nepali set free in charas case
A Nepal citizen, arrested by the Delhi Police on the charge of possessing four kg of charas, has been acquitted by a city court for want of evidence. Additional Sessions Judge M. R. Sethi set free Safi Ahmed Khan, a resident of Bara in Nepal, after finding no substantial evidence against him, and also because of the contradictions in the prosecution’s account. Khan was caught with the drug behind Priyadarshini Jhuggi Colony in Sadar Bazar area on March 26, 2003, the police said.
5-yr RI for carrying drug
A youth, who was arrested with 16.5 kg of marijuana last year, has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of five years by a city court. Additional Sessions Judge I. S. Mehta also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the 21-year-old convict, Vidyarthi. The court, which took a lenient view after it was informed that the convict was poor and had a large family to support, said if he fails to pay the fine he would have to undergo further imprisonment of one month. On August 1, 2003, Vidyarthi, a native of Bihar, was arrested near Yamuna Bridge, Gautam Puri, for possessing the banned drug. The case was lodged in I P Estate police station. |
2 arrested for palming off ‘gold’ bricks
New Delhi, September 24 The complainant, Inderjeet Singh, a resident of Noida, told the police that the duo had palmed of the fake gold bricks. The police has disclosed that the bricks were not made of gold. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police claims to have solved a daylight robbery that took place in Dabri area in Southwest district. The arrested persons have been identified as Anil (24) and Amit (26). The police said that the duo had committed a daylight theft on September 21 and robbed a shopkeeper of Rs 400. |
NTPC Accounts Officer embezzled Rs 7 lakh
New Delhi, September 24 Barua was the signatory of the NTPC, authorised to sign on behalf of the corporation in bank transactions. According to the CBI, he had between January and June 1986 obtained two bank drafts of Rs 6.71 lakh and Rs 38,370, respectively, and deposited the same in his own account by forging signatures of the NTPC authorities. Later, he utilised the amount for purchasing a house in Kalkaji Extension, a car, a TV and an amplifier. The defence said no loss was caused to the NTPC as SBI had conditionally reimbursed the amount. But the court rejected the contention, saying it does not mitigate the offence committed by Barua. “It only shows that there were some lapses on the part of the bank and they did not want to lose a good customer like the NTPC,” the court said.
Constable caught
The Anti-Corruption Branch of Delhi Police claims to have arrested one constable, Salim Khan of Badarpur Police station, and his tout Ram Vilas, a tea maker, for accepting Rs 1,500 from a person. Nar Singh, the complainant, contacted the police and reported that Salim Khan was pestering him for money. The police arrested him red-handed while accepting the money. |

New Delhi, September 24 Some of the world’s most sophisticated and advanced safety and comfort measures have been implemented in metro stations and trains. The Australian companies have provided several parts used in different sub-systems. These include air-conditioning and door-closing systems, disabled-friendly tactile flooring and certain portions of ballastless tracks. Ballastless tracks, it may be mentioned, minimise the need for track maintenance and also reduce running dimensions on structures. Besides ensuring lower maintenance cost and enhanced safety, these also reduce vibrations and increase riding comfort for passengers. Apart from being a major centre for coach maintenance for the Metro project, as per the funding plan approved by the Government of India, a major property development project is also coming up adjacent to the depot. |

New Delhi, September 24 They had joined service in 1998 after facing an interview panel comprising the Principal Secretary, Health, Director, Health Services and the Principal of Maulana Azad Dental College. Initially, they were appointed for six months and, thereafter, they had been given extensions without break. They had approached the court in 2000 for help and following its directive, they had been given benefits of earned leave and maternity leave in 2001. They had also obtained a stay order from the court against appointment of new dental surgeons and demanded that first their services should be regularised. |

New Delhi, September 24 A delegation of the AIDSO also submitted a memorandum each on communalisation of education and professional college issue to the Ministry of Human Resources Development. The organisation said the National Policy on Education drafted by the Rajiv Gandhi-led Congress government in 1986 was being followed by all successive governments. The policy emphasised job-oriented professional courses and ignored other areas, it pointed out. ‘’The sole aim of the policy was to restructure the whole education system and make it job-oriented according to market demands,’’ the organisation said, adding humanities like literature, history, economics and basic sciences like physics, chemistry and maths were ignored. |

Rules should be strictly followed to maintain law and order,” he advised them. New Delhi, September 24 A former Union Minister of State, Mr Vijay Goel, CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal, FEDSIA President Kapil Chopra and CAIT State General Secretary Narender Madan participated in the rally. The rally passed through Asaf Ali Road, Ajmeri Gate Bazar, Hauz Qazi, Chawri Bazar and Nai Sarak. The protestors carried placards and black flags. CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khanddelwal said that the UAM was not citizen-friendly. It was neither transparent nor in the interests of the traders in the Capital. Mr Vijay Goel, in turn, said that the MCD had arbitrarily set the use factor for different categories of owners of property: While residential colonies have been put under one use factor, industry has been put under three use factor and trade has been put under four use factor, which would make the tax liability on trade and industry much higher. Mr Narender Madan said that the penal provisions were very harsh and could not be “digested under any circumstances”. |

New Delhi, September 24 The police said that the cards belonged to one of the club members. When he found his cards missing and money was withdrawn from his account, he contacted the police. After investigation, the police arrested the accused.
