The two Congress-backed organisations and arch rivals in students’ politics, the Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) and the Students’ Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU), will jointly form the next Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC).

His disarming smile and innocent ways did the trick for PUSU candidate Rajwinder Singh Lucky besides, of course, his work for the students all through the year. Elected president of the newly constituted Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC), Lucky won by a margin of nearly 400 votes from his nearest rival in today’s election.

Rajwinder Singh Lucky (PUSU) — 1,764 votes: We won because we stayed in touch with the students and their problems. PUSU’s tradition of work culture and its popularity weighed the scales in our favour.

Gurparvez Singh SandhuGurparvez Singh Sandhu (ABVP) 1,352 votes: We paid the price for crossvoting by our activists. I can’t take solace in the fact that I am second best because I was and am number one candidate material.
Ranjit Singh Raju Ranjit Singh Raju (SOPU-NSUI-HSA-USSA-HPSU) — 1,202 votes: “Kidnapping” of our supporters cost us the president’s seat. We have won two seats and made a dent in the PUSU vote bank.

Cop’s son abducts dentist girl
Chandigarh, September 24
A dentist in Kotbilla village in Panchkula was allegedly kidnapped by a son of an Inspector of the Chandigarh police. The father of the girl of Sector 22 alleged that his daughter was allegedly kidnapped by Amit Walia who runs a school in the city.

A seniormost Inspector of the city police may be promoted with the Chandigarh Administration asking the Inspector-General of Police to give a list of the DSPs and Inspectors who want to be inducted as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Vigilance Department of the UT.

11-year-old dies of mysterious bite
Mohali, September 24
Kanta and Kuldip consigned the body of their 11-year-old son to flames today amidst disbelief and shock in their house in Mohali. Harjot (11) called Shanky at home, died of a mysterious ‘bite’ at the PGI last night. Initially it was thought to be a snakebite that he got from school, PGI doctors declared that Harjot had died of an acute infection.

As many as 35 temporary houses near Bhainsa Tibba village in Mansa Devi Complex, were removed by the enforcement staff of Haryana Urban Development Authority today.

Saw mill irks electronic unit’s owner

A saw mill running in the middle of a cluster of electronic units in Phase IX Industrial Area has become a cause for concern. The mill running from a vacant electronic unit is causing havoc with the electronic equipment being manufactured by its neighbouring units.

VAT will simplify indirect tax system, says PHDCCI

The objective of VAT is to simplify the tax system on global lines and make it easy for the tax payers as compared to the existing pattern of tax, which is not only cumbersome and complicated, but also open to legal lacunae, said Mr S.K. Students of the Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT) here presented a collection of evening dresses designed by them as part of their course. The evening wear module is taken up in the final year of the fashion design course structure where students are taught specialised evening wear from design to development stage. This year the students worked on a theme of evening wear and designed garments for the Miss World Pageant.

Accused in Avedna case denied bail

Mr Justice Rajive Bhalla of the High Court has dismissed the petition filed by Zakir Hussain, the main accused in the alleged kidnapping of Ambala girl Avedna Sharma. In his petition, Zakir , who is lodged in Ambala Jail, had prayed for grant of bail to him in the case.

Administration, MCC ‘differ’ on property tax rate

The Chandigarh Administration and the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC), it seems, do not see eye-to-eye on the imposition of 3% property tax on the commercial property in the city.

The Chandigarh Administration said yesterday in view of the shortage of “smart cards” issued for driving licences and registration of vehicles, it has been decided that members of public will be given temporary slips which will be valid for driving and RC.

After doing away with power cuts in residential areas, the Chandigarh Administration today removed peak load restrictions for industrial units in Industrial Area, Phase I and Phase II.
