GNEC Principal suspended
College to reopen on Monday

Giving in to the adamant stand taken by striking students of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College here, newly elected SGPC President Jagir Kaur today suspended Principal R.P. Singh and also ordered the execution of the suspension orders for Prof J.N. Jha with immediate effect.

Nirmal Singh 31 years ago he robbed Rs 10, caught now
Ludhiana, September 24
Thirty-one years ago, Nirmal Singh, then a resident of Dashmesh Nagar here, had along with two others allegedly robbed a telephone exchange employee of Rs 10 and managed to elude arrest in the case till now. The amount may not seem much today, but the charge stands against him till date, and he may have to pay for it now.

Farmers block rail track

Activists of three farmer unions, Zamhoori Kissan Union Punjab, Kirti Kissan Union and Bharti Kissan Union (Ekta), Sidhpur, blocked the rail track for three hours as part of a statewide agitation to urge the government to accept their long pending demands.

A police-public meeting was held by the Arhtiya Association in old grain market, Jagraon, today. While speaking on the occasion the SSP, Mr Rajiv Ahir, said public cooperation can help the police to tackle public problems and crime more effectively.

Six of family drugged, looted
Ludhiana, September 24
Six members of a transporter's family were drugged and looted by a Nepalese servant in Block-R, Model Town, last night. The suspect seemed to have mixed some unidentified drug in food as the victims were left seriously ill after consuming it.

4 booked for murder bid
Ludhiana, September 24
The Civil Lines police registered a case of attempt to murder against four persons yesterday. The four persons barged into a clinic in Ghumar Mandi yesterday afternoon and attacked Rinku Kumar with a knife.

Private godown looted
Doraha, September 24
A godown of Vijay Sugar Company of Doraha was looted near Kaddon village this morning. According to the watchman, Bhinder Singh, on whose statement a case has been registered at Payal police station, four or five persons climbed the 15-foot-high wall of the godown with the help of ladders after tying him with a rope and opened the main gate from inside.

Deposits in the banks from the district have registered an increase of Rs 605 crore at Rs 11,239 crore at the end of June 2004 from Rs 10,634 crore in March 2004.
