Bypass inaccuracies in history books: NCERT

Putting the controversy over the use of the “saffronised” history textbooks prescribed by the previous NDA Government to rest, the NCERT has directed the teachers to use the existing history textbooks while avoiding the “inaccuracies” in them.

Tributes paid to Tibetan martyrs
Tibetans take out a candle-light procession on the Panjab University campus in Chandigarh on Monday. Chandigarh, September 27
Members of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, Chandigarh, today took out a candle-light procession in memory of those who had laid down their lives in the struggle for freedom in Tibet. It was on this day 17 years ago that hundreds of Tibetans, monks and their supporters went out of their houses for a peaceful demonstration in the capital city of Lhasa but only a few returned.

PU students bodies over spend on poll
Chandigarh, September 27
The Panjab University Students’ Council elections proved to be an expensive affair this year. The final expenditure for all three students organisations, Panjab University Students Union (PUSU), Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), stood at over Rs 6 lakh, way off the estimated budget of Rs 30,000 to Rs 1 lakh made before campaigning began.

Government College Principal suspended
Mohali, September 27
The Punjab Government has suspended Mr Harkuldip Singh, Principal, Government College, Mohali. Mr Harkuldip Singh was placed under suspension on September 22, following the initiation of a departmental inquiry on the charges of maladministration levelled against him by the Kharar MLA, Mr Bir Devinder Singh. Following a checking at the college on September 16, the MLA had, in a letter to Ms Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, stated that punitive action be taken against the Principal and other erring officials, who had messed up the affairs at the college.

New rules for listing of cases before judges
Chandigarh, September 27
The Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued fresh guidelines for listing of cases in which relatives of sitting Judges of the High Court appear as advocates.

Wards of policemen suddenly started queuing up before senior police officers to get a certificate that they were children of serving men in khaki. The increasing number of wards of policemen was noticed a few days after the physical test for the Chandigarh police started in the Sector 26 Police Lines.

Tourist Information centre opened
Chandigarh, September 27
A Tourist Information Centre with a touch screen kiosk was inaugurated by the Home Secretary-cum-Secretary Tourism, Mr R.S. Gujral, at Sector 17 today. Tourist information centres already exist at the Railway Station and the Bus Stand in the city. Mr Gujral said that such touch-screen kiosks shall be installed at other places like the air port and the ISBT, Sector 17, for the benefit of the tourists.

Run for tourism organised at Panchkula

Haryana Tourism Corporation celebrated the “World Tourism Day” throughout the state. A number of events were organised in this connection. Ms Navraj Sandhu, IAS, Managing Director, Haryana Tourism Corporation, stated that a ‘Run for tourism’ at Red Bishop Tourist Complex, Panchkula, was held today.

Punjab National Bank will motivate residents of Kaimbwala village to form self-help groups, especially in dairy sector, so that individual dairies being run from houses be brought together and run in a cooperative form. Kaimbwala in collaboration with PNB will be the first village to form self-help groups in the Union Territory.

A 27-year-old Nepalese domestic help of a former Deputy Director of the Industries Department of Punjab today allegedly hanged himself to death, leaving behind his wife and one-and-a-half year old daughter.

Thieves decamped with cash and gold from two households in the same house in Sector 71 here today. The landlord, Mr H.S. Chopra, and his wife Surinder were out when thieves entered the house by breaking the back door.

Justice Swatanter Kumar shifted
Chandigarh, September 27
Mr Justice Swatanter Kumar of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has been transferred to the Delhi High Court. Mr Justice Swatanter Kumar had sometime back sought his transfer back to Delhi, his home state. Orders of his transfer were issued by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam after consultation with the Chief Justice of India.

Thirty per cent of the children in the age group 12 to 20 years are facing problems of blood pressure and diabetes in certain cities. This was stated by Brahma Kumari Shivani of Om Shanti Retreat Centre, Delhi, while addressing officials of the Punjab School Education Board here today.
