B.N. Goswamy is Plan panel group member
Chandigarh, September 27 The Consultative Group will provide guidance in selection of the key issues and emerging problems for preparing inputs on culture for the mid-term appraisal document of the Tenth Five Year Plan in addition to give critical advise and directional inputs for further improvements. A communication to this effect has been received from the Planning Commission. Dr Goswamy is a distinguished Scholar who was awarded Padma Shri in 1998. A topper who created new score records, Dr. Goswamy joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1956 from where he resigned in 1958 and did his Ph.D. from Panjab University. He has been a Visiting Professor to European, American and Canadian Universities. Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London, Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society, London, Member of American Oriental Society and Fellow of the Asiatic Society of Membai, Dr. Goswamy was given the Rietberg Award for outstanding research in art history, from the City of Zurich, Switzerland. |
J&K students enjoy stay at YPS
Mohali, September 27 As many as 20 students, 16 boys and five girls, along with three teachers, from Model Academy, Sagra, are on an educational tour to the area. Most of them have been on an outing like this for the first time. Students of YPS, who had visited Jammu and Kashmir last year, are now looking after the visiting students. Divya Bhasin, a class VI student, said she was impressed by the facilities given to students by YPS. She said that she studied in a school, which was located in a small town where adequate facilities were not provided. She was learning to wake up early in the morning as was being done by students staying in the hostel here, she added. What impressed Mohammad Imran, a class VII student, was the discipline at YPS. He said he had been on a tour for the first time and was enjoying himself. Col H.S. Bhagat, who accompanied the students, told mediapersons here today, that his battalion was running the school at Sagra under Operation Sadbhavna. He said there were nearly 250 students in the school and most of them had not been out of a radius of 20 km. He said the aim of bringing students on this trip was to expose them to environment of other states. This was to help the children integrate with the national mainstream. Col Bhagat said that the students were taken to the Bhakra hydroelectric project yesterday. They would also be taken to Rose Garden, Rock Garden and the Lake in Chandigarh and the Chhatbir Zoo in Patiala district. Ms Achla Sharma, a teacher, said they had reached YPS on September 25 and were planning to leave for Jammu and Kashmir on September 30. The tour had been planned and organised by the Balnoi Battalion under the aegis of the Krishnaghati Brigade of the Rajouri division. Financial support for the trip was provided by the Army and it was flagged off on September 24 by Brig H.H. Mahajan, Commander, Krishnaghati Brigade. |
Hindi fortnight at detective school
Chandigarh, September 27 Essay writing, elocution, reading, one act play, and calligraphy contests were organised during the fortnight. Winner of these contests were also given prizes. Principal of the school Bhagnand Negi also participated in the event. Hindi Officer and DSP Surinder Pal Singh also took part in the function. The Central Bureau of Investigation’s regional head B.L. Soni, was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion he said Hindi was not only the national language but was also mother tongue of a large number of people and a link language. Prize distribution
Mr B.R. Dubey, Chairman, Indian Public Schools Conference, was the chief guest and Captain Verma, Principal-cum-Director, of the Motilal Nehru School of Sports-Rai was the guest of honour at a prize distribution function held at Dikshant International School, Zirakpur, today. Mr B.R. Dubey gave away prizes to meritorious students. The students performed a cultural show which was highly appreciated by guests as well as the parents. Ms Garima Dikshit, Principal of the school, informed that an exchange programme for the teachers and students (aged 11 years and above) would be undertaken with schools of UK and Germany. Ms Maureen, Chairman of Public Schools of UK would be visiting the school on November 3. As many as 14 headmasters from Germany will visit the school early next year. |
NIPER Director honoured
Mohali, September 27 Dr Rama Rao was chosen for the award for his extensive and excellent contributions in the area of biochemical pharmacology with particular reference to developing biochemical and pharmacological markers for quantitative toxicology. This award is presented ever year for the pharmacology and drug development in the memory of Dr I.C. Chopra. The other recipients of the award are Dr C.K. Atal (2000), Dr Y.K. Gupta (2001) and Prof Manju Ray (2002). |

Students visit Kalka railway station
Chandigarh, September 27 The children were enthusiastic to see the 6000-horse-power engine procured from Germany and considered to be the latest and the most powerful electric engine of the Indian Railways. The children had the privilege to see rail-cars and the vintage rail track. The trip proved to be quite educative to the children about one of the fastest means of transportation to enhance tourism, the School Principal, Ms Punam Dogra said. |
Flower arrangement contest held
Chandigarh, September 27 The participants took part in the flower arrangement competition enthusiastically. There were two categories, including fresh flower and dry flower arrangement in the competition. Students from Government College for Girls, Sector 46, Dev Smaj College, Sector 36, Home Science College, Sector 10, Food Craft Institute, Sector 42, Government College of Fine Arts, Government College of Education, Sector 20, Government College of Mohali, ITFT, and Dr Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management took part. The judges for the competition were Ms Indu Bala Singh, Ms Indu Sharma, Ms Namrata Prasad and Ms Anita Gupta. 46 cases settled at
Lok Adalat
Chandigarh, September 27 Organised under the aegis of Mr Justice Swatantar Kumar, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and executive chairman of the authority, the adalat took up 83 cases and settled 46 cases. A sum of Rs 13.64 lakh was awarded at the adalat. The adalat was presided over by Mr Sant Parkash, Member Secretary-cum-Judge of the Permanent Lok Adalat, and attended by, among others, Mr K.K. Monga and Ms Ramneek Sharma. Mr Sant Parkash said any person from the general public, before going to court, could submit an application to get the dispute settled through the adalat without paying any court fee. Among the disputes taken up at the adalat were family disputes, recovery loans, labour problems, property disputes, landlord-tenant disputes, claim petitions, compoundable criminals disputes, disputes of electricity and water bills. The authority also provided free legal aid to those sections of society whose income was less than Rs 50,000 per annum. It provided free aid to members of the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, persons in custody and women. The main objective of the authority was to serve the people through settling disputes in an amicable manner without any delay with a view to provide access to justice for all, Mr Sant Parkash said. |
