Flash strike as student is slapped for ragging
Parmindar Singh

Ghaziabad, September 10
The students of Inderprasth Engineering College Ghaziabad went on strike after getting the college closed for the day in protest against the dean who had slapped a student for indulging in ragging yesterday. The students created a ruckus on the college premises.

They indulged in stone-pelting, damaged the glasspanes and raised slogans against their teachers and the college management. No classes could be held in the college for the day.

When Prof Lalit Mittal of Inderprastha College came to know that senior students were engaged in ragging the freshers, he went out and slapped Himanshu, a 2nd year B-Tech student who was ragging a 1st year student. This led to the protest among students.

In a climbdown, the college management had to assure the student that such incidents would not take place in future.

In Greater Noida, the senior students of various institutions were more ingenious. They placed themselves at parking slots, canteens, and main gates to the institutions and at the bus stops to have their pick of the docile freshers. The seniors also made the best of the vacant periods between classes to indulge in ragging.

The administration had issued terse instructions to the educational institutions, asking them not to allow ragging in keeping with the apex court orders on the subject.

The college faculty and management had also taken sufficient precautions. Teachers and members of the disciplinary committees were taking rounds of the premises by turn.

All the same, the seniors had thought of newer ways of ragging. Some of the antics were pleasant and enjoyable like asking the fresher to recite a poem, sing a favourite film song, narrate the dreams, make a speech etc.

A city court today sentenced a Nigerian national to four years of rigorous imprisonment for possessing 70 gm of cocaine. Special Judge N. K. Sharma also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the accused Shokambi Anthony, alias Frady.

Acting on a tip-off that four Nigerian nationals — Frady, Emeka, Ola-Yinka and Ikechi — would assemble at a house in Vikaspuri with heroin and cocaine, the Narcotics Branch of Delhi Police nabbed Frady on April 15, 2003. However, his three associates managed to escape. In a subsequent search, the police seized the banned drug from his possession. Charges were framed under the relevant sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act against Frady on November 12, 2003.3.

Shokambi added a lot of drama to the case when he alleged that he was accosted by the policemen on his way back from the embassy. They also took away his US $ 1,500, he had alleged.

When he objected, he was beaten and falsely implicated in the drug case, he told the court. However, the court did not find his argument tenable.

The testimony of the police officials was found to be fully reliable, the court said.
