MBA admission seekers duped of Rs 70 lakh
New Delhi, September 7 The police arrested Bobby Saxena from his house in Rohini whose interrogation led to the arrest of Deepak Chatterjee, alias Deepak Kashyap, and Raj Kumar Soni. Their other associates, who have been identified as Vikas and Pandey, are still absconding. Operating from Delhi, they had allegedly duped 12 students of Ludhiana, promising them admission in MBA courses in Symbiosis Institute, Pune, and K.J. Somaiya Institute in Mumbai, the police said. The victims learnt about the racket when they drew a blank at their admission centres. The victims tried to contact the suspects on their mobile phones, which were found to be switched off. Later, they reported the matter to the Economic Offences Wing. The police said that Deepak Chatterjee was the brain behind the scheme. He holds a B.Sc. (H) degree in Mathematics from Delhi University. Using common contacts, he would entice innocent but rich students on the pretext of securing them admissions in reputed management institutes in Pune and Mumbai. In one of his operations, he duped 12 students of Ludhiana in Punjab. Between March and April this year the victims had paid Rs 63.5 lakh in cash and Rs 16.5 lakh in the form of drafts favouring K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research , Mumbai, and the Symbiosis Institute of Management, Pune. As per plan, all students, along with heir guardians, were taken by air to Mumbai to meet one Shinde who pretended to be the owner of K.J. Somaiya Management Institute. This plan was hatched by Bobby Saxena, Vikas, alias Shinde, and Soni. According to the police, Boby Saxena had got a fake bank account opened in the Bank of Punjab, Bandra, in Mumbai in the name of SIMSR, purportedly the Silicon Institute of Management Studies and Research. These initials were intentionally chosen to dupe the gullible students. In a further attempt at make-believe, even visiting cards were printed of this dummy institute. The drafts, which were given to Deepak Chatterjee towards payment of fees in favour of SIMSR, were deposited in the fake account and misappropriated. The money was then transferred to another account in the Bank of Punjab, Preet Vihar, Delhi. Raj Kumar Soni was a final year B. Com. student (Correspondent Courses), University of Delhi. He worked for the gang to make some easy money. On the other hand, Deepak Chatterjee gave dates for admission in various colleges to the candidates. The police said that one of the victims was taken to Pune by air and introduced to a man named Pandey, purportedly the PA of the education minister; he was further told that his seat would be confirmed through him. This turned out to be a fraud. |
Contract killers caught with arms
New Delhi, September 7 The suspects were identified as Sanjay Garg, alias Fauji; Mehruddin, alias Mehru; Mohammed Riazuddin; Rizwan; Ismail, alias Pehelwan; Farahim and Dilshad, alias Kale. Five country-made pistols, two knives and two motorcycles were recovered from their possession. The suspects were being further interrogated. Inquiries so far have revealed that the suspect were wanted in Meerut in connection with the murder of Rajesh Chowdhary, owner of a bakery shop who was shot dead on September 2. The suspects had reportedly received Rs 2 lakh for the murder. The murder of the bakery shop owner had led to a considerable unrest among the trading community there. Ashok Chand, Deputy commissioner of police, Special Staff, said that initially Sanjay and Mehru were arrested from near Apsara Chowk in East Delhi. The other suspects were rounded up after the preliminary interrogation. The police said that Sanjay was arrested recently in connection with the murder of Manoj Kasana, a relative of Madan Bhaiyya. He had only come out of jail in July this year. |
Father-in-law charged with rape
Mussori (Ghaziabad), September 7 On a report filed by the woman’s father, police have arrested her husband. The accused, father-in-law and his younger son, are absconding. During interrogation of the woman and her husband, everything became clear. She was married to Zahir, a resident of Kallugarhi, five years ago. Zahir had not allowed his wife to meet her parents even once since then. This was Zahir’s third marriage. Similar harassment of his wives is considered to the cause of the break-up of his earlier marriages. When a few days ago, her father had come to invite the family for the marriage of her younger sister,
he was not allowed to meet his daughter. Some neighbours, it is learnt, had informed her father in Delhi about it on phone. The father had filed a report in Mussori police station. The police then interrogated Zahir and his wife and came to know of Zahir’s role. The husband is also allegedly involved in the sinister and criminal conspiracy. When the victim complained to her mother-in-law about it, the older woman also allegedly reprimanded her. While Zahir has been arrested, his father and brother are |
Norms for shop workers at night
New Delhi, September 7 As per the recommendations, if a shift system is introduced, the owner will have to ensure that a worker does not work only in night shift. Overlapping of shifts will not be permitted and if a shop remains open on all seven days, each employee will be given a weekly off by rotation, the recommendations said. No woman employee will be “allowed or required”
to work in shops during night hours. Employees will be entitled to a compensatory off in addition to overtime wages at double the normal rate, if they have to
work on a national holiday, they said. A number of employees’ associations had criticised the government move to allow shops to remain open till 11 p.m, saying that the owners might exploit the workers and make them work for longer hours. The government has also assured owners of small shops that it was not mandatory to keep the establishments open till 11 p.m. throughout the week. Several small shop owners had expressed the fear that they will have to follow the new timings, even if they do not have the staff to do so. |

RSS, Shiv Sena oppose separate Mewat district
Gurgaon, September 7 In a meeting of office-bearers of the RSS held here, a strong opposition to any move for granting a separate district status to Mewat, was expressed. The meeting was presided over by the local Sangh Chalak, Major Deen Dayal (retd). Giving details of the meeting, he stated that a decision has been taken to give support to the proposed agitation by the Arya Samaj on the issue. The meeting described the move of the INLD government to grant district status to Mewat as a mere gimmick guided by political expediency. The meeting further felt that there was no justification for a separate district status when already Mewat Development Agency under the aegis of Mewat Development Board was in place. The Board is headed by the Chief Minister of the state and it was set up by a legislative Act of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha for integrated development of the area of Mewat, dominated by Meo Muslims. The move will only foster fundamentalist forces, it was added. The Shiv Sena is also reported to be in high dungeon on the proposed move of the state government and is seriously considering supporting an agitation by the Arya Samaj on the issue. The “Gau Aveng Sanskriti Raksha Manch” has already organised a joint meeting of various religious and social organisations relating to the Arya Samaj to examine the issue. The speakers expressed the view that a separate district would encourage cow slaughter, proselytation and religious fundamentalism which had the potential to rupture the social fabric of the area. The meeting has decided to take out a procession in the city on September 9. Senior leaders of the Sanatan Dharam, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, among others, will take part in the procession. Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, who is also the INLD supremo, had promised before the last assembly election to grant a separate district status to Mewat. |
Handing over of Tricolour to RSS thwarted
New Delhi, September 7 About 50 activists of the ‘Defeat BJP Forum’, an organisation formed two months before the general election, were stopped by the police when they were taking out a procession to the RSS state headquarters at Jhandewalan here. “We were marching peacefully to the RSS headquarters to donate a national flag and submit a memorandum, but the police stopped us,” said Madhu Prasad of the ‘Defeat BJP Forum.’ She said the RSS should first raise the national flag over its own headquarters all over the country “before hoisting it in Hubli.” The police put up barricades to prevent the procession from Ajmeri Gate near the New Delhi Railway Station to the RSS state headquarters in Jhandewalan. The activists shouted slogans like “Gandhi hum sharminda hein, tere katil zinda hein” (Gandhi we are ashamed that your killers are alive). Prevented from gifting the Tricolour, the Forum activists now plan to travel to the RSS national headquarters in Nagpur to donate a national flag. “We have a plan to go to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur to gift a Tricolour,” Ms Prasad said. The BJP’s ‘Tiranga Yatra’ is to protest the arrest of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharati, against whom the Congress-led Karnataka Government revived a ten-year-old case of inciting riots by hoisting the Tricolour at a disputed ground in Hubli, before withdrawing it. |

Power connection eludes Noida residents
Noida, September 7 However, only 50 consumers out of 225 have so far been given the connection. To cap it, there are many houses in the colony where electric wires dangle dangerously, risking the lives of the residents. It seems the Power Corporation staff do not bother. A major tragedy befell a family in the area due to the alleged negligence of the UPPC staff. Raju Singh, a member of the family was electrocuted on Sunday. In spite of several reminders, the staff had not changed the cable of
Raju Singh’s metre. As the wire was exposed, Raju Singh had to pay the penalty for it with his life. The Noida Authority had handed over these flats to the allottees about two years ago, says Dr R Singh, a resident of the sector when about 30 to 40 per cent work was still to be completed. Out of 884 flats, some 225 residents have applied for power connection of 1 kilowatt by depositing Rs 2,243 each with the UPPC. Only 50 of them have got the connections, the rest are still awaiting as the poor residents are not able to shell out the bribe to the officials, allege many people in the area. General secretary of Shramik Kunj Welfare Association Girish Mishra had applied for an electric connection to his house No. 197 in June. Receipt No. 017630 was issued on July 28, 2004. However, the electric metre has not been fixed in his house. On his persistent requests, a makeshift direct connection was provided by the UPPC staff. On June 25, 2004, Mr Mishra said a list of 97 consumers were given to Executive Engineer BPS Chauhan at whose premises the electric metres had not been installed in spite of their having deposited the required amount. Wherever the electric metres have been installed in some cases, they have not been given proper connection and energised. They are just decoration pieces. Similar situation was exactly the cause of Raju Singh’s death–a stark negligence on the part of linemen and the JE. DCEO Avinash Gaur of the Noida Authority had even suggested to BPS Chauhan on July 8 in a letter to organise a camp in the colony for the purpose. In this labour colony, most of the manholes are without covers and lamp posts, without light. This despite the fact that the team under ACEO Debashis Panda had inspected the colony many months ago. According to GM UPPC, BB Singh, the Noida Authority had given possession to the allottees when most of the infrastructural facilities had not been provided. Singh said he would order an inquiry as to why the residents have not been given the electric connection and metres even after depositing the fees. He has called for an explanation from an executive engineer in this connection. |
Noida in grip of diarrhoea
Noida: There are no indications of abatement of diarrhoea in Noida town, notwithstanding the claims of the health department. As many as 125 diarrhoea patients had been admitted to the emergency ward in government hospital in Sector 30 during August. The condition of all of them was serious.
In last 24 hours, another 14 patients have been admitted to the district hospital. It is established now that diarrhoea is flourishing in the slums of Sector 8, 9 and Harola area. Roughly 50 per cent of the total 600 patients visiting government hospital daily are suffering from diarrhoea. Out of the 125 patients admitted in the emergency wards of Sector 30 hospital, 35 were from Harola while 25 belonged to the slums of Sector 8 and 9. The 14 patients admitted yesterday are also from Harola and Sector 8 and 9. According to Dr R.K. Dhawan, impure drinking water is the single largest cause of diarrhoea. Then all-round unhygienic conditions, heaps of waste, cut vegetables, fruit etc and exposed and stale eatables add to its
spread. — OC |
Motorable roads a pipedream for Delhiites?
New Delhi, September 7 Commuters complain of “mounds, ditches and various kinds of hitches”. For those travelling longer distances, the report cards of the roads are even worse. They are offended that the government’s idea of making this place a world class city holds no promise owing to the poor condition of roads that require skill to negotiate the unnecessary hurdles. Every year, crores of rupees are spent by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Public Works Departments (PWD) on the construction and repair of roads. However, all the money seems to have gone down the drain. The MCD launched its drain cleaning drive with much fanfare this year, but just one spell of the monsoon was enough to drown all its claims. Even important roads like the Ashoka Road in the VVIP area has developed potholes after the monsoon season. The endless delay in the completion of the flyovers and sub-ways has made driving on the roads a nightmare. The ongoing construction work in many areas, including the sub-way on the Mathura Road near the Humayun’s Tomb and the Lajpat Nagar flyover, add to the woes of the commuters. It was pointed out that the authorities seemed to have given no thought to providing proper alternative passages before digging up or blocking roads for construction of flyovers or sub-ways, particularly when these project are endlessly delayed. Roads dug up for laying of pipelines at the crossing near the Escorts Heart Institute in south Delhi has not been repaired. The Vikas Marg, which links important destinations in the Capital, remains damaged at number of places, despite the deadline of Delhi Finance Minister having expired. The ongoing construction of the Metro Rail has made travelling from Patel Nagar to Punjabi Bagh on the Ring road a nightmare. The Dhaula Kuan road and the one near Kirby Place have been commuter’s worry for sometime now. Even as Delhi Finance Minister A. K. Walia traced the problem to improper drainage system in the Capital, he has failed to explain why it was left unattended so far. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has expressed her displeasure over the slow pace of work on the flyovers. However, while the government has been quick to find excuses for its failures, it has failed to pin down officials responsible for the poor infrastructure in the Capital, which aspires to be known as a world class city.
Bandh to protest closure of units
Protesting the decision of the Delhi Government to close industries in all non-conforming areas, the Delhi Manufacturers Federation has decided to go on an indefinite ‘industrial strike’ from tomorrow; during the stir dharnas will be staged and road blockades enforced. The federation, an umbrella body of 50 industrial associations, stated that despite several representations to the government and its assurances, small manufacturing units were being forced to wind up. “All the assurances of a large number of leaders have borne no fruit. Under such circumstances, the Federation has been compelled to declare an indefinite industrial bandh, dharna and road blockades in Delhi,” Federation Secretary G. K. Sethi said in a statement. Accusing the state government of backtracking on its promises, it stated that the Delhi legislature had passed a resolution in July for amending the Master Plan for converting areas with a industry concentration of 70 per cent or above as regular industrial areas. Terming the state government’s decision as unjustified, the Federation said closing down of industrial units will directly hit 15 lakh workers and 10 lakh others indirectly. It has also apprised CPI-M General Secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet of the hardships faced by the small industries because of the state government’s decision. |
HC advises spouses on divorce fallout
New Delhi, September 7 Justice Vikramajit Sen said, “Every child requires exposure to and influence of both his parents.” It was trite to state, but still necessary to reiterate that it was the child welfare, which must be kept in the fore while granting custody or visitation right to the parent who does not have custody, Justice Sen said. So far as the interests of the child, who has no role or say in the spousal spat, were concerned, it was imperative that a meaningful exposure to both parents should be ordained by the court, he added. The court was dealing with a plea by a father who had appealed against the trial court, granting him only one hour per month visitation right to his daughter, that too, within the court precincts. One hour every month was clearly counter-productive for the achievement of the objective of meaningful exposure, the judge said adding that the court should endeavour to make a weekly meeting possible. The duration of the meeting should be fixed so as to enable a healthy interaction between the parent and the child, and should not be reduced to a mere legal formality, he said. “There is no reason why a shorter visitation, say for one hour, should also not be ordered on a weekday so that there is constant contact between the child and parent. “This may be onerous or awkward for the parent who has custody, but in a dismembered family, it cannot be avoided. The parents will eventually evolve a system and develop a pragmatic and healthy attitude where their lives continue in the smoothest manner possible even in such adverse and unfortunate circumstances,” Justice Sen said. |
Devotees throng temples
New Delhi, September 7 A festive atmosphere pervaded the city with plays depicting scenes from the
life of the dark-skinned God, one of the most loved deities of the country,
being organised at the temples. The biggest celebrations were held in the ISKCON Temple in southern Delhi and Laxmi Narayan Temple near Connaught Place. Huge gates were erected outside the ISKCON Temple and devotees chanted “Hare Krishna” amidst the singing of Bhajans (hymns) and reverberating sound of drums and cymbals. The main festivities, however, would be witnessed after midnight when the birth of Krishna in his uncle Kansa’s prison in Mathura would be re-enacted. Though the celebrations were held in Laxmi Narayan Temple last night itself, devotees continued to visit it for most of the day to offer prayers. The fact that Central and Delhi Government offices were closed today helped matters. In several parts of the city, children aided by their parents built models of Gokul, where according to legend Krishna spent most of his childhood. Elaborate security arrangements were made by police to maintain law and order with barricades and deployment of additional personnel at sensitive points. Some temples, including the ISKCON Temple, hired their own guards to control the crowds. |
