Father of 6 electrocuted

A 32-year-old father of six was today electrocuted while whitewashing a house in Hallomajra village. Shrawan Kumar, a resident of Ram Darbar and his wife Laxmi came to the house at 8 a.m. Laxmi was working on the ground floor and her husband on the upper floor. Suddenly, she heard her husband’s cries.

Chandigarh to have judicial academy
Chandigarh, September 7
It is almost final. Judicial academy for judges belonging to the superior judicial services is being set up in Chandigarh. The states of Punjab and Haryana, besides the Union Territory of Chandigarh, have already short-listed three sites for the purpose in consultation with the High Court here.

Ban on corporal punishment sought

Chandigarh, September 7
Demanding a ban on corporal punishment, participants at a conference on “Teacher-student relationship and human rights” today advocated milder forms of punishment to students. A resolution passed at the conference, while advocating other forms of admonishments which do not harm students, urged the authorities concerned to frame policies aimed at maintaining the dignity of the teaching community.

Lift curbs on sale of property via GPA: NGO
Chandigarh, September 7
Samadhaan, an NGO, today urged the UT Administration to lift restrictions on the sale of property in the city to enable residents to go in for affordable accommodation by availing themselves of loan facilities on easy terms.

Mystery shrouds death of old man
Panchkula, September 7
Mystery shrouds the death of 61-year-old resident of a labour colony, who died at General Hospital here late last night. The victim, Panchi Ram, was rushed to the hospital late last night after a bout of vomiting and severe abdominal pain. He was administered treatment at the hospital, but later died.

Woman held for possessing smack
Chandigarh, September 7
The Chandigarh police today arrested Kamla for allegedly possessing 40 gm of smack. The police also arrested four others. Kamla is a registered bad character (dus numbari) in the Sector 39 police station. She is facing several cases. She was arrested while selling drugs in Sector 38-A. The police is interrogating her. In separate raids, Makhan Singh, Ranpreet Singh, Dalwinder Singh,all from Ambala district, and Sangram Singh of Sector 15 were arrested in the city.

Cases of immigration fraud on  the rise
Panchkula, September 7
The complaints of immigration frauds detected by the Economic Offences Wing of the police have been swelling by the day. Other than the four FIR’s registered against the Managing Director of Global Infolinks, Rohit Sikka, the police has received over 30 applications by those who have been cheated.

A minor girl of Indira Colony was reportedly kidnapped by her neighbour on September 2, according to the information released by the police, here today.

Man held for wife’s death
Chandigarh, September 7
The police has arrested Rajesh Kumar Prashar, husband of Ritu Sharma, who committed suicide yesterday, on the complaint filed by her father. Baldev Raj, father of Ritu reported to the police that his son-in-law Rajesh used to harass his daughter for dowry. She was under stress.

2 cops hurt in accident
Mohali, September 7
A case has been registered in connection with an accident in which two police personnel were injured near the telephone exchange in Phase IV here late last night. Mr Harinder Singh of the Punjab Police suffered a fracture in leg and was operated upon today at a private hospital here.

Panjab University’s poll date soon
Chandigarh, September 7
Panjab University is likely to shortly finalise the date of the elections to the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) and those to students’ councils in city colleges. While the UT Administration is learnt to have given its nod to elections in September, the date will be announced once the university receives the permission letter for the same.

Under a unique project to introduce fresh look to khadi garments being sold in khadi stores at Chandigarh and Ropar, the Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT) here has created a set of trendy khadi designs. These designs would be followed by the Punjab Khadi Mandal (PKM) tailors for mass production and make them available at the PKM stores across the state.
