Cyclists on a mission to Khardungla Chandigarh, September 7 This and much more forms part of “Lakshya Khardungla,” a cycle expedition which they have conceived with the target of covering a record breaking distance of 6000 km from Srinagar to Etanagar in India. As volunteers with Nehru Yuva Kendra functioning under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the bikers have already covered a significant distance beginning their strenuous journey from Delhi on August 20 which saw the expedition being flagged off by Sunil Dutt. Narender says, “From Delhi we traveled to Srinagar in a bus and from there we set out to achieve our target. We have encountered many hardships along the way, especially while in Ladakh. But the pleasure of facing them together has also been immense.” Interestingly, the foursome met the most formidable challenge of touching Khardungla at a height of 18, 338 feet in the very first phase of their expedition. Their most memorable experience has been the one involving an overnight halt at Kargil where local Muslims were only too happy to host them. Says Jagmohan who is from Uttranchal, “They are used to seeing foreigners on cycles. We surprised them pleasantly, so did they.” Arriving in Chandigarh last evening, the bikers are now planning their journey ahead. They left for the second leg of their expedition today. In fact by now they would have crossed Paonta Saheb. Sharing the experience of biking, Kanwar Singh said, “This expedition was planned, courtesy our camp commandant who was keen that we set some new record. Adventurous as we are, we did not think twice before taking the plunge. In fact we like all the attention being showered upon us.” With a target of covering at least 160 km per day, partners in adventure are progressing at a heartening pace. But they still have several milestones to cross. During the course of their journey, they will pass through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal before disembarking in Arunachal Pradesh. |
