DUSU polls: Three seats out of four to NSUI
New Delhi, September 4 However, unlike last years’ unprecedented margins, this time the candidates just managed to inch ahead of their nearest rivals. ABVP’s Gaurav Khari won the post of Joint Secretary. He polled 8,101 votes as against NSUI’s Kapil Nagar, who polled 7987 votes. Deepti Rawat, who was considered a front runner for the post of President, lost to NSUI’s Narendra Tokas, by 542 votes. While Deepti polled 10,321 votes Tokas claimed 10,863. NSUI’s Ashok Basoya, who polled 9,788 votes, beat his nearest rival Neeraj Dagar of the ABVP by 4,035 votes, claiming the post of Vice-President and also ensuring a bigger margin than the rest. ABVP’s Ravinder Singh, who got 5,353 votes, lost the post of Secretary to NSUI’s Amrita Dhawan, who polled 8,781 votes. Incidentally, NSUI’s Ragini Nayak, who had won the post in the last elections, had polled an incredible 20,500 votes. An elated NSUI, however, has decided to file a request for re-counting for the post of Joint Secretary. National President Ashok Tanwar told mediapersons that the party has decided to go for re-counting considering the performance of the rest of the three panellists. Humbled by their loss, for the second consecutive year, the ABVP attributed it failure to the “NSUI’s muscle and money power”. Rawat said: “The NSUI was spending a lot of money to woo voters. During the campaigns in hostels, I saw booze being freely supplied to the boys. The amount of money that they have spent has made all the difference.” Refuting her allegation, NSUI’s Tanwar, who began his post victory speech with thanksgiving to Sonia Gandhi, said that the NSUI’s ideology has seen them through. “We have won a very tough election. We were the incumbent party and there was great competition, but we still emerged winners, because the students were with us,” he said. Tanwar also pointed out that the party would “immediately” get down to fulfilling its promises. “Safe and secure campus, improvement in the standard of studies and academics…will be our agenda,” he said. The third front, led by Students Federation of India (SFI), the Chhatra Lok Janashakti (CLJ), the Chhatra Rashtriya Janta Dal (CRJD) and the Samajawadi Chhatra Sabha (SCS), which contested as the United Student’s Front (USF), could not make a mark in the elections. Their presidential candidate, Akhila Singh, lost the election for the second consecutive year. Having staked a claim to the panel, INSO also registered a dismal performance. The party has also decided to seek a recount, claiming that the “polls were rigged”. The party’s spokesperson said, “The votes have been fudged and we just don’t believe the results. We have won the post of President and the panel in at least 11 colleges, we had a lot of support from the students and, therefore, we do not accept these results.” NSUI’s Kapil Nagar, who lost to ABVP’s Gaurav Khari, along with his supporters, has alleged that the “results had been tampered with.” They have, therefore, sought a recount. |
Let’s make it a city where head is held high: Sheila
New Delhi, September 4 Addressing teachers at the State Teacher’s Award distribution ceremony, Ms Dikshit said, “It saddens us when we learn that women are not safe here or senior citizens are not respected, but the police or the administration alone cannot wipe this off. We all need to chip in with our small bit.” The help of teachers is needed to educate children and inculcate in them the noble deeds of civilisation. Compassion, respect for others, care for the old and sensitivity towards the mute are the virtues that build and refine character, she told the gathering. “It ultimately comes back to us when we do a good deed or a bad one. Whether it is with the older people, fellow citizens, women, the poor and weak or the animals, it does reflect on us,” the Chief Minister said. “Every year we gather to remember Dr S Radhakrishnan on Teacher’s Day; to learn something from his words and deeds and his character. We need to plant a small bit of that in those whom we love and care for,” she emphasised. Awarding 68 teachers from Delhi for their contribution to education and outstanding performance, Ms Dikshit said the awards were actually for their contribution towards society. A good teacher not only elevates his / her school, family, community and city, but also the nation because good work shines above everyone and everything else. As conscientious citizens, we need to learn and teach the goodness of keeping our city clean and green apart from being sensitive to animals, who are mute and helpless, Ms Dikshit said. “This is how we make our small contribution to society to which we owe our entire life,” the Chief Minister added. The awards winners received Rs 10,000, a citation, a silver medal and a shawl. Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely presided over the function. At another function, Industry Minister Mangat Ram Singhal called upon the teachers to inculcate traditional values in their students. “There is also a need to create awareness about the country’s heritage and culture,” he said and called upon the teachers not to fall prey to greed. “There is something wrong with our education system that teachers run business also. They become interested in giving private tuition to earn extra money,” he regretted. The awards were sponsored by the Akhil Bharatiya Swatantra Patrakar Avam Lekhak Sangh and the National Child Women Development Charitable Trust. A former education minister, Mr Narendra Nath, in turn, said the transfer policy relating to teachers should be streamlined. He said he had written to his successor Arvinder Singh Lovely not to transfer teachers 40-50 km from their schools. “The teachers should stay within 4-5 km from their schools, otherwise they would not be able to devote much time to their students,” he said. |

The worthy holder of the ‘Queen of the Danube’ title has much to offer, including Europe’s largest Parliament, the continent’s first underground railway, towers and palaces, rivaling those of Vienna, and much more. LG frowns on token punishment in graft case
New Delhi, September 4 By invoking his powers vested under the Act, the Lieutenant Governor has made serious comments on the action of awarding minimum punishment to an Assistant Health Officer on corruption charges. The comments of the Lieutenant Governor reflect the imperfect working of the corporation, Mr Gupta alleged. The Assistant Health Officer had lifted water and ice samples from some factories and knowingly left some technical lacuna in the process of sample testing, resulting in the acquittal of the owners of the factory concerned. Surprisingly, the departmental inquiry committee had allowed the guilty Assistant Health Officer to go scot-free. However, on reference, the Central Vigilance Commission has observed that the matter is important and the officer cannot escape his responsibility. Accordingly, the matter was put up before the corporation, which awarded the penalty of censure only. In the same case, the co-charged official had been awarded the penalty of five per cent cut in pension for three years, against which he had appealed to the Lt. Governor. Having gone through the full facts of the case, the Lieutenant Governor has observed that the action of the corporation awarding a notional penalty of censure is not consistent with the responsibility under the statue and it would also be prejudicial to public interest, the Lieutenant Governor said. |
