Woman, minor son found dead
Husband, in-laws booked under dowry Act

Raikot (Ludhiana), September 10
A 25-year-old woman of Pherurai village and her one-and-a-half-year old son were allegedly murdered by the woman's in-laws. The bloated body of Harpinder Kaur was found from a canal near Phallewal village last evening.

Jagraon MC chief voted out
Ludhiana, September 10
The factionalism within the Congress has cost it the post of the President of the Municipal Committee, Jagraon, who was voted out after a no-confidence motion against him today. Mr Devinder Kathuria, President, Municipal Committee, Jagraon, was voted out after six Akalis and eight Congress councillors voted against him. The no-confidence motion was moved by the Akali councillors and supported by eight Congress councillors.

Giving bad marriages a second chance

When the Crime against Women and Children (Prevention) Cell was constituted under the Family Courts Act here in September, 2001, it was taken to be just another exercise in futility. But three years down the line, the cell continues to provide counselling and legal help to estranged couples and victims of atrocities in their domestic and social life.

14.8 lakh to get old age pension
Ludhiana, September 10

The Punjab Government has embarked upon an ambitious programme of providing old-age pension to about 14.8 lakh persons every month. Disclosing this here today, the Minister for Rural Development, Panchayats, Irrigation and Power, Mr Lal Singh, said each pensioner would be paid Rs 200 a month, which would cost Rs 360 crore to the state annually.

SBP staff observe strike
Ludhiana, September 10
Protesting against the management’s “rigid” attitude, employees of the State Bank of Patiala have observed a strike. A massive rally was held in front of the bank’s regional office.

Migrant labourer found murdered
Mandi Ahmedgarh, September 10
Close on the heels of murder of a migrant labourer at Jurahan village, another migrant labourer was found murdered at the farms of his master. Seemingly an honour murder, the killing has once again brought to the fore the need to verify to antecedents of labourers working in farms.

Man held for attempt to rape, murder
Ludhiana, September 10
Raju, a migrant, was arrested by the Sarabha Nagar police yesterday and booked under Sections 307, 341, 506, 376, 511 and 323 of the IPC for attempt to rape and murder of a girl living in Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar.

PCTE declared best B-category school 
Ludhiana, September 10
The Punjab College of Technical Education has been ranked best B school in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. A survey was conducted by the IMRB in association with the Business Standard for AIMA (All- India Management Association).

Talent search contest at college

In order to find budding singers and actors, a talent search contest was organised at Arya Girls College here today. The function started with a prayer. The freshers displayed their talent by presenting solo as well as group dances.

NSS camp organised
Doraha, September 10

A one-day NSS camp for boys was organised at Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, yesterday. Seventy volunteers, along with Prof Pargat Singh Sekhon and Prof Gursharanjit Singh, participated in the camp. The volunteers cleared the mess of the college lawns.

‘Aagman’ to freshers
Mandi Gobindgarh, September 10
‘Aagman 2004’, a freshers' party, was organised by students of Desh Bhagat Institute of Management and Computer Sciences (DBIMCS). The main attraction of the function was modelling, Malwai giddha, Kerala dance, Punjabi songs and western dance.

The Punjab Student Union (PSU) burnt the effigy of Transport Minister, Mr Mahinder Singh Kaypee, to express its anger and displeasure at inaction on part of the minister at the ITI, Gill Road, here today. Students blocked traffic for 10 minutes and raised slogans against the minister.

Hospital services hit as staff continue stir
Ludhiana, September 10
The work in the Hero DMC Heart Centre continued to remain suspended as the strike by some of the employees entered its sixth day today. Many employees in Dayanand Medical College and Hospital today alleged that some employees were trying to hold the entire hospital management, staff and patients to ransom by resorting to blackmail.
