Wife, son club man to death

Chandigarh, June 14
A Junior Warrant Officer (JWO) in the Indian Air Force here was today allegedly bludgeoned to death by his wife and his disabled son, who turned 18 yesterday, to what they called an end to a 22-year-long “sentence of torture” at his hands.

No case in fracas involving tenants, SSP’s wife
Chandigarh, June 14
Even after 24 hours of high drama over a petty issue following which two youths had complained against an Inspector of the Chandigarh police, the wife of the SSP, Ropar, her gunman and occupants of a house in Sector 8 here, the police has not registered any case in this connection.

Rs 47 lakh sanctioned for repairs on Ghaggar bridge

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and National Highways has finally released a grant for the repair of a vital bridge across the Ghaggar, on the National Highway 73, which had been swaying dangerously.

Over 80 lakh paid to victims’ kin, says Ranbaxy
Mohali, June 14
The Ranbaxy management today stated that it had been taking adequate care of the families of those who died following the blast and fire at the unit on June 11, 2003. Stating that Ranbaxy had paid over Rs 80 lakh to the families of the five persons who died in the fire, officials pointed out that they had not received any compliant from any family member of the victims.

IXTY years ago on June 6, came a turning point in the history of Europe when the Allied forces stormed the Normandy beaches in the D-Day landings. Tens of thousands of US, British, Canadian, French and German veterans with their families, besides French civilians, gathered on this day in Normandy to commemorate the historic battle. Not only that, 22 leaders from 16 countries, including for the first time, the Russian and German leaders, were present on this occasion.

The Chandigarh police yesterday detected that fake Gujarat Ambuja cement was being sold from a shop at Burail village here. The proprietor of Saini Cement Store, Paramjit Singh, was arrested and four bags of cement and 150 empty bags bearing Ambuja cement makings were seized from him.

Camps mark World Blood Donors Day
Chandigarh, June 14
A number of functions and blood donation camps marked the world’s first Blood Donors Day here today. The main theme was to create awareness regarding voluntary blood donations and to work on the motto of “each one enroll one”. During the celebrations at the Department of Transfusion Medicine at the PGI, a blood donation camp was organised in which more than 100 persons donated blood. Special postage cover was released by Chief Postmaster-General, Punjab, and Chandigarh circle L.K. Puri as a mark to honour to donors.

Manjeet SinghA national-level skater at 13
Chandigarh, June 14
Manjeet Singh, a 13-year-old skater from KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, has grown into a national-level roller skater, thanks to the support from the school management, coaches and his parents. In the just concluded 41st Senior National Roller Skating meet held at Visakhapatnam, Manjeet was the only skater from the city to secure the gold medal in the speed event in the individual section of the Rink Race II.

The coveted Rexello Castors Indo-Pak Peace Snooker Tournament will be telecast live on all four days by Doordarshan Sports. The event will be held for the first time here. It will telecast the matches from 11 am to 6.30 pm daily. A team of 42 technicians and cameramen of Doordarshan will be involved in covering this historical event live through 2 OB Vans.
