Chandigarh, June 14
Manjeet Singh, a 13-year-old skater from KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, has grown into a national-level roller skater, thanks to the support from the school management, coaches and his parents.

In the just concluded 41st Senior National Roller Skating meet held at Visakhapatnam, Manjeet was the only skater from the city to secure the gold medal in the speed event in the individual section of the Rink Race II. He also captained the UT sub-junior roller hockey team and again brought the gold medal. In the road race, Manjeet won the silver medal.

Prior to this, Manjeet had won scores of medals in the CBSE National Roller Skating meet held in Chandigarh and Faridabad in 2002 and 2003, respectively.

In the 46th National School Games held in 2000 at Panchkula, Manjeet created a scare for senior skaters by winning the gold medal in the Rink Race I and the bronze medal in the Rink Race II.

Manjeet began skating as a student of Bhavan Vidyalya, Sector 15, Panchkula, and his first coach was AD Sharma. He later learned the finer points of the speed event and the roller hockey event from various coaches namely Bhupinder Singh, Harpreet Singh, Balwinder Singh and Sarabjeet Singh.

Manjeet says he has been offered 50 per cent fee concession and bus service free of cost by his school. But he feel that unlike Punjab and Haryana governments, the Chandigarh Administration is not doing any significant contribution to promote the cause of skating. He says his parents have always encouraged him to perform in skating.
