Hooda seeks Chautala’s resignation Chandigarh, May 14 The first to make the demand were, of course, Haryana Congress President Bhajan Lal and Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Mr Bhajan Lal said since both sons of Mr Om Prakash Chautala had lost the elections, he should uphold democratic traditions and quit on his own. He added if his son had lost the election, he would have immediately quit as the party chief. Mr Hooda said since Mr Chautala professed to be a great believer in democratic traditions, he should quit because the results of the Lok Sabha elections had conclusively proved that he had lost popular support. Mr Randeep Surjewala, President of the all-India Youth Congress, said Mr Chautala used to claim that what to talk of a majority, even if a single MLA of his party expressed lack of confidence in him, he would quit. Mr Kartar Singh Bhadana quit the INLD saying that he was feeling suffocated under Mr Chautala’s leadership. Therefore, Mr Chautala should now honour his word, the YC leader demanded. |

Inside Babudom Chandigarh, May 14 Mr Malik went on leave after the Election Commission directed the state government to transfer him from the post of DGP since his wife, Krishna, was to contest the Sonepat Lok Sabha seat on the INLD ticket. Initially, Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, refused to implement the directive of the commission. However, Mr Malik later voluntarily proceeded on leave to “avoid unnecessary controversy”. The senior-most IPS officer of the 1967 batch, Mr B.R. Lall, who was the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation, was given additional charge of the post of DGP. A non-controversial officer, Mr Lall is to retire on May 31. It is presumed that Mr Chautala wants Mr Lall to retire as the DGP. Till then Mr Malik is to stay in the Vigilance Bureau. Mr Malik is not the seniormost after Mr Lall. He belongs to the 1969 cadre. Mr Nirmal Singh and Mr A.S. Bhatotia, who are also in the rank of Director-General, belong to the 1968 batch. Mr Nirmal Singh is posted as the DG, Rules, while Mr Bhatotia is the DG, Prisons. Mr Chautala is unlikely to post Mr Nirmal Singh as the DGP because he had dragged the latter in a court case to claim damages when he was the Chief Minister earlier. After Mr Chautala came into power in July, 1999, Mr Bhatotia was allowed to continue as the DGP but was shifted to the Prisons Department after the 2000 Assembly elections. Mr Bhatotia was made the DGP by Mr Bansi Lal. Sources in the police say it is unlikely that the Chautala government would appoint anyone other than Mr Malik as the DGP after the retirement of Mr Lall. Meanwhile, the government has appointed Mr Anil Kumar, AIG, T&T, as S.P. to the Justice J.C. Verma Commission of Inquiry. Mr Balbir Singh, S.P., Telecommunication, Haryana, has been given the additional charge of the post of AIG, T&T. |
