Chautala predicts hung Parliament
Kaithal, March 14 This was predicted by the Chief Minister, Mr Om Parkash Chautala while talking to mediapersons here today. Mr Chautala said the INLD was open to enter into an alliance with any party which suited it politically. He said consultations were on to select party candidates for parliamentary constituencies in Haryana and other states. Criticising the BJP central leadership, including Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, Mr Chautala said now he had realised that to extend support to BJP at the Centre was not a correct decision. He accused the BJP of collecting huge funds for elections from the industry by allowing them to increase rates of various commodities including steel, cement and sugar. Mr Chautala also criticised the BJP for increasing the prices of diesel, urea and other agricultural inputs in the past few years. Mr Chautala said the recent appeal by Mr Advani not to vote for regional parties and even vote for the Congress was out of frustration as he wanted to become the Prime Minister even with the Congress support. He criticised the rath yatra being undertaken by Mr Advani. Earlier, addressing a huge public meeting at Pai village late last evening represented by Mr Ram Pal Mazra, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Mr Chautala said Rs 89 crores had been spent on development works in the Pai assembly constituency during his current tenure. He gave credit to Mr Mazra for the development in his constituency. Mr Chautala also addressed a public meeting in Kaithal town late last night. He said his government has completed record number of development projects in the state despite lack of financial support from the Centre. |
CM launches campaign
for Ambala seat Naggal (Ambala), March 14 Although it was believed that he would announce the party candidate for the Ambala seat at the Naggal rally, he did not do so. Addressing a well-attended rally, he attacked the Congress and the BJP. Mr Chautala said his government had carried out all round development of the area. “We have spent more than Rs 100 crore in Naggal alone while the figure is more than Rs 400 crore for Ambala,” he said. He said the Congress had increased the price of sugarcane by 50 paisa per quintal. “The lack of interest shown by different parties has encouraged people to join our party,” he said. Sixteen persons from other parties joined the INLD today. Taking a dig at the infighting within the Congress in Haryana, Mr Chautala said: “I feel that there are 13 Congress parties in Haryana. Several Congress leaders are aspiring for chief ministership. In INLD, there is only one chief ministerial candidate but in the Congress there are 13 claimants.” He said they had extended support to the BJP-led NDA
government at the Centre. “We wanted to give a new direction to the nation but the BJP leaders in Haryana let us down. They voted against us in the Assembly and they participated in demonstrations against our government,” he said. He said Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani had said casting vote for a regional party was a waste. “When Mr Advani wanted to form the government, he took our support. Now he is saying that it is a waste to vote for us. I think that the BJP and the Congress are both alike. They are opportunists,” he said. He claimed that when the INLD came to power, the state was in a bad shape. “We have improved the road network,” he said, adding that the Punjab portion of the SYL canal would be constructed by the Border Roads Organisation. He said the Vidhan Sabha elections would be held in 2005. “We have a lot of work to do and we hope to finish pending work in the next one year,” he said. |

Senior citizen counters CM’s claims
Israna (Panipat), March 14 As Mr Chautala reached the stage, many police personnel touched his feet. Before Mr Chautala’s speech, local party workers contributed about Rs 5 lakh to the party fund. While Mr Chautala highlighted his government’s achievements, a senior citizen sitting in the first row stood up and countered Mr Chautala’s claims about development. He drew Mr Chautala’s attention the poor state of roads in the area. Sensing resentment among the public, Mr Chautala said it was not possible for any party to fulfil all demands of the people, but he had tried his best for the development of the state. Mr Chautala said the state would not only become self-reliant in power generation soon but would also supply electricity to neighbouring states. Criticising the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L.K. Advani’s yatra, Mr Chautala said Mr Advani had spent crores on the sophisticated bus for the journey at the cost of the exchequer. Asking people to vote for regional parties, Mr Chautala said BJP had formed the government at the Centre with the help of regional parties and now Mr Advani was criticising these parties. Mr Chautala said the state Assembly elections would be held in March, 2005. The Speaker, Mr Satbir Singh Kadiyan, blamed the BJP for early elections to the Lok Sabha. He said there was no need to hold the elections six months before the scheduled time. |

NCP threat to contest all seats
Chandigarh, March 14 Sources in the party say since the NCP and the Congress have entered into an alliance at the national level, the two parties must contest the Lok Sabha elections as allies in Haryana also. Therefore, the Congress must leave a respectable number of seats for the NCP in the state. Sources close to the President of the NCP, Mr Ved Pal, say the state unit has sought permission from the high command to contest all Lok Sabha seats in Haryana if the Congress does not honour commitments made by its national leadership. They say the state unit has already prepared panels of candidates for the 10 constituencies. The panels have been sent to the high command. It is learnt that for the Ambala reserved seat, the party has recommended the names of Mr Gian Chand, Mr Jasram Kamal, Mr Vinay Kumar and Mr Dharam Raj. From Kurukshetra, Dr Ghanshyam Dass Bansal, Mr Shiv Om Gautam, Mr Balwan Singh Saini, Mr Surat Singh Bajwa, Rana Mahipal Singh, Mr Ram Sharan Khanpur Kolian and Mr Ram Kumar Moudgil are aspirants for the NCP ticket. The party has recommended the names of Mr Suraj Bhan Aggarwal, Mahant Hukam Chand Kashyap, Mr Sunil Dhingra, Mr Om Prakash Sharma, Mr Mohinder Singh Mehla from Karnal. The panel for Sonepat includes the names of Mr Sanjay Badwasniya, Mr Ranbir singh Bajwan and Mr Shamsher Singh. The Hisar panel comprises Mr Jyoti Prakash Gupta, Mr Ram Bhagat Saini, Mr Shamsher Singh and Mr Ramphal Goyal. A former DSP, Mr Ajit Singh, Mr Mohinder Singh Choudhary, Ms Saroj Saini and Mr Dharminder Singh want the NCP ticket from Rohtak. The panel for Faridabad includes the names of Mr Hari Chander Bhadana, Mr Ajit singh Harsana, Mr Prem Chander Khattar, Mr Anil Sabarwal and Mr K.D. Prashar. The party has recommended the following names for the other seats : Mahendragarh — Mr N.C. Jain, Capt Chattar Singh, Mr Davendra Singh Chauhan and Mr Ram Kishan Yadav; Bhiwani — Mr Dalbir Singh Sheoran, Mr Digvijay Singh, Mr Vijay Singh Dahiya and Mr Pratap Singh; and Sirsa — Mr R.S. Sailani, Mr Gian Chand and Mr Rameshwar Dass. It is unlikely that the Haryana Congress would submit to the threat issued by the NCP because leaders of the former have already gone on record to say that in Haryana there is no need for the party to enter into an alliance. It is also unlikely that the NCP President, Mr Sharad Pawar, would make Haryana — where his stakes are not very high — a prestige issue and rock the alliance with the Congress. |

Beopar Mandal to work for INLD’s defeat
Rohtak, March 14 Mr Gupta said here today that the mandal would support candidates constituency-wise and the ones capable of defeating Mr Chautala’s nominees would get the support of his organization. The candidates would be selected by a committee. He said a 15-member core committee of the mandal had taken this decision at a meeting here today. He said although the mandal had supported Mr Chautala and his party in the last Assembly poll, the Chief Minister had of late, become dictatorial. He never fulfilled the promises he made to traders and businessmen after becoming the chief minister. The mandal at its last meeting in Panipat on February 15 had given the Chief Minister one month’s time to discuss its demands. However, the Chief Minister did not give the mandal leaders an appointment. Now the mandal had decided to oppose him. He said the mandal leaders would campaign among traders, businessmen and the general public to persuade them to defeat INLD candidates. Other faction of the mandal headed by Mr Bajrang Das Garg of Hisar is also opposed to Mr Chautala. |
