Chautala cautions regional leaders
against BJP Chandigarh, March 13 In a statement issued here today, Mr Chautala told the regional parties to be “beware of the sinister designs of the BJP in general and Mr Advani in particular.” He reminded the leaders of the regional parties that “the arrogance and desire to appropriate all political space by the so-called claimants to the tag of national parties had always led to the suppression of regional aspirations. “In fact, the unwillingness of the bigger parties to appreciate and accommodate the aspirations of the sub-regional parties has been the stumbling block in the faster progress of the country,” he added. Mr Chautala has also written letters to leaders like Mr George Fernandes, Mr Nitish Kumar, Ms Mamata Banerjee, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, Mr Navin Patnaik, Mr Farooq Abdullah, Mr P.K. Mohanta, Mr Parkash Singh Badal and Ms Jayalalithaa. He has pointed out that the regional parties had played a vital role in the formation of the National Democratic Alliance “to give the country the much-needed political stability after the country had to undergo three General Elections between 1996 and 1999... After having ruled at the Centre with the support of the regional allies, Mr Advani did not hesitate to ask the voters to vote for the Congress...This makes me wonder if the sole objective of Mr Advani and the BJP was to cling to power even if it had to join hands with the Congress. “Such opportunistic planning and blatant disregard for voters whose aspirations are met only by the regional parties, needs to be exposed. I, therefore, urge you to appropriately react in the media and other foras so that the monolithic parties realise that the regional parties and their voters have a right to exist... and that anyone who denigrates their voting rights needs to be condemned.” It is not known if any these leaders has responded to Mr Chautala’s letter. However, Mr Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal who has close ties with the Chautala family, only recently overruled his son Sukhbir and declared that his party would support the BJP in Haryana and not the INLD. |

Few takers of INLD, BJP flags
Ambala, March 13 With the Lok Sabha elections round the corner, shops dealing in election related material like party flags have replenished their stocks. Mr Gurdeep Singh, who runs a shop at Ambala Sadar, said that there is an increasing demand for political party flags. “While the demand for Indian National Lok Dal and Haryana Vikas Party flags has already picked up, Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress flags are finding comparatively fewer takers,” he said. There is good demand for flags displayed on cars. There are three types of car flags on sale. While the expensive one made of woollen material with embroidery is priced at Rs 100, car flag made of terrycot is available for Rs 50. The cheapest variety is the simple printed variety which is available for Rs 30. The range of ‘normal sized’ party flags starts at Rs 60. At the base price, a printed party flag measuring two feet by three feet is available. At the higher end is the political party flag costing Rs 100, which has embroidery work on it. Mr Gurdeep Singh stated that besides political party flags, they have an expertise in preparing flags for the defence forces, police and administration. “We had supplied National Flags during the Kargil war,” he said. “Besides the order for National Flags during the Kargil war, I had also sent additional National Flags free of cost with the promise that they would only be used at the forward posts which had been won by our soldiers after defeating the enemy,” Mr Gurdeep Singh stated. He said that Brig P.C. Katoch of 102 Inf Bde had written a letter to him following his gesture. “I just did my duty in honour of those who made the supreme sacrifice while defending the nation’s territorial integrity,” he said. |

Chautala govt ‘exploiting’ owners of private schools Hisar, March 13 In a press note issued here, he said the government’s decision to implement Education Guidelines-2003 from the next session would result in the closure of thousands of private schools in the state. These schools were providing employment to thousands of youths, he pointed out. Mr Bishnoi said after the implementation of the guidelines, a large number of school owners would be forced to close their institutions as they were not in a position to fulfil the norms laid by the Chautala government. The government’s decision would not only render thousands of teachers jobless, but also make it difficult for parents to educate their wards, he maintained. He said it was unfortunate that examinations were going on in Haryana while school owners were on roads to protest against the decision. He held the government responsible for this situation. He alleged that the future of teachers as well as poor students, whose parents could not afford high fees of recognised schools, was at stake due to Mr Chautala’s adamant attitude over the issue. Mr Bishnoi demanded that instead of implementing impractical guidelines, the government should encourage the school owners by providing facilities. |

Accused refused anticipatory bail Chandigarh, March 13 The accused had allegedly hired assassins to kill Daulat Ram for avenging his father’s death. The prosecution had claimed that Daulat Ram was initially blamed for killing the father of the accused, but was acquitted in the murder case by Karnal’s Additional Sessions Judge on April 5, 1997. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was asked to look into the murder case by Mr Justice K.S. Garewal of the High Court in December, 2001, after Daulat Ram’s wife Haridevi had alleged police inaction. In an attempt to solve the case, the premier investigation agency had taken into possession several unclaimed bodies. The CBI had also questioned Daulat Ram’s “servant” Bahadur, missing soon after the incident. According to the CBI, Bahadur, in a statement before a Magistrate, had revealed that three persons had carried out the killing in his presence. Claiming to have been implicated in the case, the accused, on the other hand, had alleged the hatching of a conspiracy to frame him. The accused had asserted that Bahadur was planted by the prosecution. His real servant Vinod’s name was mentioned in the first information report lodged by Daulat Ram’s wife.
