ICD implantation: Glad tidings for heart patients
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, January 27
Here is good news for heart patients of the region. The Metro Heart Institute here, which had been empanelled by the State government for its staff recently, has succeeded in implanting an ICD (Implantable cardio verter decibilator) in a patient, who had a very fast heart beat and ran the risk of sudden death.

The patient, identified as Mohinder Pal Chawla (48), had been admitted here after he fell unconscious. Mr Chawla, who had undergone a bypass surgery in November last, was afflicted with an unusual kind of disease called Ventricular Tachycardia.

According to the doctors of the hospital, the patient was required to be given a DC (direct current) shock for revival but they said it was only an interim measure and there was no guarantee that a similar thing would not happen again. As a long-term measure, to overcome the problem, the doctors implanted an ICD in his heart on a permanent basis. While this was the first case of its kind in this hospital, the doctors claims that it could be a landmark achievement as far as the facilities were concerned.

A spokesperson of the hospital said that the ICD was an advanced device which would monitor the patient’s heart beat and deliver the shock in the event of ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation or heart arrest.

He said the device was imported from the US and had cost the patient about Rs 5 lakh. It is claimed that the patient would now be able to live for many years as the risk of sudden death had been minimised.

However, the doctors would have to replace the battery of the ICD after 5 to 7 years and the patient needed to come for a follow-up every six months, so that the doctors could check the functioning of the device with a non-invasive programmer.

It is also possible to change the programme set in the machine without touching the ICD.

It is learnt that such a problem occurs only among heart patients and the facility is available at select hospitals in the country.
