CM imposed taxes without consulting BJP Rohtak, December 7 Addressing reporters at the state party headquarters here today, the state BJP chief, Prof Ganeshi Lal, said though the BJP was opposed to implementing the VAT system of taxation, house tax on houses used by owners for residential purposes and professional tax, the Chief Minister imposed these taxes. He, however, said the BJP would continue to oppose the imposition of these taxes and other “anti-people” policies of the INLD government. Professor Lal did not agree with Chief Minister Chautala’s reported version that the presence of INLD candidates had helped the BJP in defeating the Congress in the just-concluded Vidhan Sabha elections in Rajasthan. The fact, Professor Lal said, was that because of the presence of the INLD candidates, the BJP had lost some of the Assembly seats. The INLD supremo, he said, had given the ticket to BJP rebels in Rajasthan, who caused the defeat of certain BJP candidates. When asked as to why the BJP was extending outside support to the INLD government when the Chief Minister did not care about their views, Professor Lal said only the party high command was comptent to take decisions regarding alliances and extending support to a government. Asked to comment on the possibility of early elections to the Haryana Vidhan Sabha in view of a CBI probe ordered by the Supreme Court into the recruitment of teachers, Professor Lal said his party was prepared for any eventuality. The party proposed to launch a ‘jan jagriti’ mission in the five parliamentary constituencies of Bhiwani, Sirsa, Rohtak, Mahendergarh and Hisar from December 13 to highlight the achievements of the Vajpayee-led NDA government at the Centre. On the culmination of the week-long yatra, the party would organise a massive rally at Hansi on December 20 which would be addressed by Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, BJP President Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister Raj Nath Singh and Mr I.D. Swami. |

Villagers booked for attack on nigam officials Fatehabad, December 7 Mr S. C. Garg, Executive Engineer of the DHBVNL, Tohana, had lodged an FIR with the police in this regard. According to the complaint, Mr Garg along with Mr R.K. Singh, SDO (Operations), City, Tohana, and some other officials of the DHBVNL had gone to check power thefts in the brick-kilns situated near Kanheri village on Friday night. They were allegedly roughed up and held as captive by some villagers, including the two persons named in the FIR. The villagers allegedly wanted to prevent the officers from proceeding against a brick-kiln owner who had been indulging in theft of power. The police has registered a case for preventing public servants from performance of duty, beating up of public servants and keeping the government servants as hostage. This is not the first instance when the villagers have roughed up senior officers of the nigam. In fact, several cases of manhandling of DHBVNL officials by activists of the BKU in this area are pending with the police. Besides these, cases of sedition had been registered against over a dozen villagers during the BKU agitation in support of the BKU leader Ghasi Ram Nain last year, but no action was taken by the police. Mewa Singh, a BKU activist wanted by the police in the present case, was also involved in the earlier incidents, according to sources. Resentment prevails among the government employees over the incident and the failure of the police to act in this case. The district unit of the Haryana Karamchari Mahasangh has threatened that its members would not cooperate in the anti-theft drive of the nigam in case the police did not take stern action against the accused. Mr Randhir Singh, senior vice-president of the mahasangh, accused the police of adopting lackadaisical attitude in this case. |
Remove faulty sewerage from green belts, HUDA told Ambala, December 7 It has also asked the HUDA authorities to restore the green belts in their original shape. Ms Kusum Aggarwal, a resident of Sector 9, had filed a complaint in the forum in which she had alleged that HUDA authorities in gross violations and alterations of master plan constructed a big drain in front of her plot over the green belt, which was 3-4 ft above the earth level, causing water stagnation during the rainy season. She said as per the master plan the sewerage and the frainages should be made underground. The complainant also filed affidavits of some other plot holders of various sectors of Urban Estate in which they had complained that the sewerage system was defective and had not been laid down in accordance with technical norms. As a result of which the sewerage system had failed and the HUDA had been discharging sewerage water of Sector 9 through the unauthorised and illegally-constructed drain. The open drains emitted foul smell, affected the aesthetic look and caused serious environmental problem. The president of the forum directed the HUDA authorities to comply with the order within six months and remove the drain constructed above the earth level.
