Sales tax evasion continues unabated

With the hosiery season at its peak in the city, sales tax and octroi duty evasion worth lakhs of rupees goes on unabated in the city. Officials of State Taxation Department, who are supposed to meet big targets here, are having a tough time to detect the evasion.

The PAU Students Association and the Researchers Association have urged the government to fill hundreds of vacant posts in various departments and extension posts of the university at the earliest.

The ongoing feud within the District Congress Committee (DCC) over the possession of the office refuses to die down with the president of the women wing of the DCC, Ms Usha Malhotra, complaining to the police that she was being threatened on behalf of the DCC president, Mr Jagmohan Sharma.

Delay in tubewell connections irks BKU
Ludhiana, December 7
Taking strong note of the failure of the PSEB management to provide power connections for tubewells to farmers strictly on merit and without delay despite clear directions from the Supreme Court the BKU has threatened to gherao board officials and adopt other methods to secure justice.

FCI, PAU join hands to minimise grain tampering
Ludhiana, December 7
In order to bring improvement in the Cover and Plinth (CAP) storage and to minimise grain tampering and quality loss in wheat stocks stored under this arrangement, the FCI and Punjab Agriculture University are jointly taking up a research project for which a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed at Ludhiana here yesterday.

Workshop on moong preparations
Amloh, December 7
Under the aegis of the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Centre, Taiwan, a team of experts on Moong cultivation from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, with the assistance of a progressive farmer, Mr Balbir Singh Jaria, organised a workshop at Dharamgarh village, 3 km from here, on Thursday. The purpose of the workshop was to make the rural women aware of the preparations from moong and highlight its nutritious values.

Resentment prevails among the staff of Nankana Sahib Public School over the failure of the police to arrest an accused student and two other persons, who allegedly threw acid on a music teacher of the school, last Saturday.

Ex-Dy Commandant acquitted in  corruption case
Ludhiana, December 7
Seven years after the Vigilance Bureau arrested former Deputy Commandant-General (Home-Guards), Punjab, Jagjit Singh Ahluwalia on charge of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, a local court acquitted him observing that his assets were within his known sources of income.

Captivating performance by Gurdas Mann
Ludhiana, December 7
The journey with Gurdas Mann last night at Guru Nanak Bhavan was truly rewarding. His compelling and energetic performance for over three hours energised the audience, which said “Dil mange more”. Being an extremely devout person , Gurdas Mann started his journey with a devotional song “Meri Rakheeye Laj”. He sang a nursery rhyme sung in village schools like “luk chup jana,makai ka daana, raje di beti aayeeh weh”.

SAN Jain School record 6-wkt win

Powered by useful innings from Tarun Passi (37 n.o) and Chintan Sehgal (33), SAN Jain Model Senior Secondary School, Circular Road, registered an easy 6-wicket win over the Government Model Senior Secondary School, PAU, to bag the trophy in the inaugural Master Dalip Aggarwal Memorial Cricket Tournament (u-19 years) organised by Bharat Box Factory at the BBF ground, Bhambia Kalan, here today.

Women’s hockey meet from Dec 9

The Ludhiana District Women Hockey Association (LDWHA) will conduct the District Hockey Championship in the junior as well as senior sections here at the Government College for Women from December 9 to 11. According to Ms Surinder Dhir, honorary general secretary, LDWHA, the tournament is being dedicated to the memory of late Ms Ranjodh Kaur Grewal, a former president of the association.
