Peenaz pays musical obeisance to Krishna Kurukshetra, December 2 Today, however, the numinous melodies of sadhus merged with the devotional presentations of Peenaz Masani, creating a musical totality rich enough to pay a befitting tribute to the cradle of the Bhagwadgita. As Peenaz assumed position on the stage at Brahmasarovar, the gathering watched her with some apprehension that stemmed from her rather fashionable appearance. Gradually, however, the listeners were convinced of her hold over the devotional realm, considered the most difficult to handle and present. Earlier, while relaxing at the Haryana Tourism’s Yatri Nivas, located near Shri Krishna Museum, Peenaz talked about Kurukshetra, its rich historical legacy as also its growing popularity in the wake of national level celebrations. Even though the singer looked enraptured by the tales she had heard about Kurukshetra, its eternal link with Lord Krishna and Gita, she could not prevent herself from enquiring: “Was the Mahabharata really fought here? Where did Krishna sermonise Arjuna?” But lack of evidence does not bother Kurukshetra admirers, just as it does not bother Peenaz. Back from a tour of Africa, sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the singer likes to believe what the legends say. “When I came to Kurukshetra eight years ago for a ghazal presentation, I was overwhelmed to set feet on the land where Lord Krishna once treaded. I am as overwhelmed on my return today. This place inspires me strangely.” Peenaz returned her inspiration when she presented Krishna bhajans this evening. Nazeer Akbarabadi’s devotional song reflecting the childhood charm of Krishna was particularly mesmerising. Among the other devotional presentations Peenaz made were — bhajans of Soordas and dohas of Kabir. “Tum taj aur kaun pe jaaon”, the Krishna bhajan by Soordas inspired the Gita Utsav with spiritual element. |
Don’t panic over tremors, says DC Jind, December 2 He was speaking at a meeting of district officers and representatives of social organisations yesterday. Since Jind town has been experiencing tremors of low intensity for a couple of weeks, the Deputy Commissioner appealed to the people of the district not to panic and instead remain prepared to face any eventuality. He assured that the district administration was fully alert and was regularly in contact with the Geological Department office in at New Delhi regarding the issue. Meanwhile, it is still not confirmed whether the low intensity tremors in Jind could be treated as earthquake or not. According to Dr Abhey Kumar Srivastava, Professor of Disaster Management at the Haryana Institute of Public Administration, Gurgaon, though Haryana lies in the high-risk seismic zone, these tremors could be because of a void created in the strata by the evacuation of underground water in a large quantity from the earth. He directed the SDM of Jind and the Executive Officer of the local municipal council to identify safe places in the periphery of Jind city, where people could be evacuated in case of an earthquake.
