Sahib college de-affiliated Ambala, September 5 The de-affiliation has put a question mark
on the future of the students who are enrolled in the college, besides
the lecturers and other staff members. The college was established
about a decade back. The provisional affiliation of the college was
withdrawn by Kurukshetra University on August 28 but the notification
was received by the college earlier this week. The college is
offering arts and commerce courses. The permanent employees include
four lecturers, three clerks and three peons. The part-time staff
includes 10 lecturers. A college lecturer said when they joined they
were promised that their payscales would be on a par with Haryana
Government lecturers. “However, we were informed that as the college
had been recently started it would not be possible to give the new
payscales,” he said. He claimed that even after five years they
have not been given the scales. “We had moved the high court in 1998
and in 2002,” he said. The lecturer said the withdrawal of
affiliation by the Kurukshetra University has left them in the lurch.
A student said, “I and my college friends are concerned about this
development. We are not sure about our future,” he added. “I
don’t know whether I will get admission in another college when the
session has already started,” he queried. He pointed out that the
affiliation of the college should not have been withdrawn at this
juncture when the academic session had begun. Haryana College
Teachers Union secretary Naveen Gulati condemned the withdrawal of
affiliation. “We are looking into the matter,” he said. |
Police prevents students from holding rally Jind, September 5 About 75 students assembled near the venue of the rally and raised slogans against the government. The police took the students into custody. Later all students were released. Several students stopped a Haryana Roadways bus near Jhanj village and threw stones at it smashing its window panes. The bus was going to Sangrur from Jind. No passenger was injured. The Jagruk Chhattar Morcha Haryana has alleged that the police used lathis on peaceful students when they came at Jind to participate in the rally. A student leader said that agitation of the students would continue till their demand was accepted. The Students’ Joint Action Committee formed to carry on the agitation alleged that the police manhandled agitating students. Mr Som Dutt
Siwha, convener of the Action Committee said that the committee has decided to observe Jind bandh on September 8 to protest against the affiliation of Jind colleges with Chaudhary Devi Lal University, Sirsa. Leaders of students had a meeting with Mr Manjit Singh Ahalwat, Superintendent of Police, on the agitation of the students. It was decided at the meeting that a deputation of students would meet Mr P.K. Dass, Commissioner, Hisar Division, and Vice Chancellor of Sirsa University on the issue of affiliation of Jind colleges with Chaudhary Devi Lal University, Sirsa. |

Imbibe Radhakrishnan’s ideals, Rewari, September 5 Addressing a state-level function organised at the Community Hall here to mark Teachers Day, the Chief Minister urged the teachers to imbibe the ideals of the late Dr S. Radhakrishnan. He asserted that inclusion of the values and ideals put forward by Dr Radhakrishnan was essential to uphold the honour and dignity of teachers. Making a specific mention of the efforts made by his government for a qualitative overhaul of the educational system, the Chief Minister said computer education had been introduced in Haryana from Class V1 while teaching of English had been made compulsory from Class I. Appropriate drinking water facilities, flush latrines, dual desks and other modern facilities had been provided to ensure harmonious development of schoolchildren, he added . Lashing out at politicians of opposition parties who had been fanning students’ agitations against the
fee hike in colleges and universities, the Chief Minister categorically stated that no hike in fee had been made, barring the fee hike in engineering colleges, and that too had been done as per the directives of the apex court. As regards the ongoing agitation of college students in certain parts of the state against affiliation of their respective colleges with Ch Devi Lal University of Sirsa, the Chief Minister said he was open to healthy criticism and would always be willing to consider constructive suggestions. Nine teachers, including two women, were honoured by the Chief Minister. The Haryana Health Minister, Dr M.L. Ranga, and a former Haryana BJP chief, Mr Om Prakash Grover, also spoke on the occasion. |
No signal facility
since 1965 Ambala, September 5 It is interesting to note that despite no signal
facility at some of these railway stations passenger trains make
scheduled halts at these stations. On the Ambala-Saharanpur rail
line the Tandwal railway station does not have a signal facility. It
was built in 1965 and since then it is functioning sans a signal
facility. Additional Divisional Railway Manager Dayal Dogra said
there were 133 stations in Ambala division. “The railway station
where there is no signal facility is referred to as flag station.
These railway stations have a railway man who sells tickets and
carries out routine jobs. Railway station where a contractor sells
tickets it is called a halt station,” he said. Mr Dogra said there
were 15 flag stations and 17 halt stations in Ambala division. He
observed that these railway stations are located in areas where there
is low density of passenger traffic. “While passenger trains stop at
these stations express trains do not stop at flag or halt stations,”
he said. A railway official said the no-signal railway stations pose
a challenge in effective running of trains. He said till a train with
a stoppage at the no-signal railway station does not cross a signal at
the next halt the section of line gets booked. Residents residing
near Tandwal railway station have sought a signal facility there so
that express trains can also halt there. However, the railway official
said it would not be possible to have a full-fledged signal facility
at the railway station as it requires manpower and it would cost about
Rs 12-15 lakh. A passenger train driver said, “The lack of signal
facilities has not caused any hindrance in our work. However, we
would prefer if all railway stations have signal facility,” a train
driver said. |

Bhajan flays
demolitions Chandigarh, September 5 In a statement issued here today Mr Bhajan Lal said by demolishing buildings constructed decades ago, the Chautala Government wanted to create an atmosphere of terror so that no one would dare to protest against its “anti-people” policies.
