SYL canal: Haryana submits action plan Chandigarh, August 24 The proposal was submitted to the Supreme Court following its directive asking Haryana to give a plan on completion of the canal. Official sources told TNS that the government on August 18 submitted the action plan proposing a five-member committee to monitor work on the SYL canal. The Union Home Secretary, the Union Water Resources Secretary and the Chief Secretaries of Punjab and Haryana will be the members of the proposed committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary. Haryana also suggested that the canal should be constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in consultation with the Central Water Commission (CWC). The sources added the Punjab and Union Governments had been given four weeks to give their views on the proposal. Haryana would get two weeks to react to the views of the two governments. The sources claimed while Punjab was stubbornly opposing the construction of the canal, it recently released more water than Haryana’s share in the existing portion of the canal to get rid of excess water. Punjab released 6,500 cusecs of water in the incomplete portion of the SYL canal around 20 days ago. |
