Plea to transfer case against Bhajan dismissed

Hisar, July 28
The District Sessions Judge, Mr Arvind Kumar Goyal, here today rejected a plea by the Haryana Government to shift the case against state Congress President and former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal from the Fatehabad court.

Mr Bhajan Lal is facing charges of attempt to murder, intimidating officials and preventing them from performing their duty during the Fatehabad byelection in May.

The government had pleaded that since Mr Bhajan Lal hailed from a nearby (Mandi Adampur) area and was an influential person he could influence the court in Fatehabad. As such the case should be shifted to a court in some other district for an impartial hearing.

The Fatehabad court had stayed the arrest of Mr Bhajan Lal till July 29 in connection with an FIR registered against him at the Fatehabad city police station. Consequently, the hearing in the case in the additional district court at Fatehabad will be heard tomorrow.

Cleanliness drive issue rocks council meeting
Tribune News Service

Ambala, July 28
The use of emergency provisions to carry out cleanliness drive dominated the meeting of the general house of Municipal Council Ambala Sadar here today.

The Sub Divisional Magistrate, Mr Narsingh Dhull, presided over the meeting. This was the first meeting of the House after Mr Suresh Garg took over as the officiating president.

A new municipal councillor, Ms Ajay Walia, was administered oath by Mr Dhull. Ms Walia was declared winner following a court order.

Mr Kamal Kishore Jain, a councillor, expressed unhappiness at the failure of the authority to inform suspended president Pandit Shankar Dass about the meeting. He said it was unfortunate that the meeting had to be presided over by the SDM despite there being a democratically elected president.

Mr Rajiv Gupta wanted to know the amount of money spent on cleanliness drive. Councillors questioned the use of emergency provision for carrying out the cleanliness drive, which had been done without the permission of the House. “We fail to understand why Section 35 emergency provision had to be used when none of the municipal councillors would have opposed the cleanliness drive,” a councillor said.

The leader of the Congress in the council, Mr Hira Lal Yadav, opined that Section 35 was being misused. He said public work had been affected in the past couple of months. “A sum of Rs 3 lakh was to be spent on each ward with the consultation of the councillor concerned but this has not been done,” he added.

Ms Neelam Sharma wanted to know the status of the outer colonies.

Fake ISO certificate!
Tribune News Service

Ambala, July 28
An ISO 9001:2000 certificate issued to an electronics company has been found to be a forged one.
The owner of an Ambala-based electronics company said he was shocked to learn that the ISO certificate issued to his firm was fake.

He said he was keen to get ISO certification for his firm as it was the need of the hour. “I approached an Ambala City-based consultant so that I could get the certification. With her help, I fine tuned firm operations to meet the stringent ISO requirements,” he said.

“After I was issued the ISO certificate number 2503, I approached the Development Commissioner Small-Scale Industry, New Delhi, so that I could get subsidy. But, my application was turned down,” he added.

Thereafter, he forwarded the certificate to the accreditation headquarters in England on June 6. “I was informed by the agency that no such certificate had been issued by it,” he said.

He said it was a serious issue. “I have spent nearly Rs 1 lakh for getting my firm an ISO certification. I feel that other firm owners must take note of this development and confirm their certification directly from the issuing authority,” he said.

Haryana VIPs to travel in Sonata Gold
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 28
The Haryana Government has decided to buy Sonata Gold cars from Hyundai Motors for its ministers and senior officers.
Sources said the government had placed orders for the purchase of 18 Sonata Gold cars, described by the rich as “poor man’s Mercedes”, at the meeting of a high-powered committee held this evening.

The sources said each car would cost Rs 9.25 lakh and carry a warranty of two years.

The meeting was chaired by the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala.

The choice was between Toyota Corolla and Sonata Gold, but the former failed to get the order as it was unwilling to reduce its price by Rs 40,000 for each car from the market price and had earlier failed to deliver 10 Toyota Qualis as per a government order.

Hyundai clinched the deal by offering a discount of Rs 3.5 lakh on the market price.

Besides ministers, the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, the Chief Secretary and the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister would also travel in the “luxury” car.

Earlier, the Chautala government had withdrawn Contessa cars from ministers, who were given Ambassador cars as an economy measure. But Ambassadors were later replaced with Maruti Balenos.

Tipra residents demand bridge over Sukhna nadi
Our Correspondent

Kalka, July 28
The Joint Gramin Vikas Parishad has demanded the construction of a bridge over the Sukhna nadi between Kalka and Tipra under the Prime Minister Village Road Scheme.
The general secretary of the parishad, Mr S.N. Sahai, said here today that provision had been made under the scheme for construction of concrete roads for connecting thickly populated villages with towns.

He said Tipra and its adjoining villages, Kangoowal, Bitna, Ramser, Bharon-ki-Sair, HMT Colony, Tipra Railway Colony, etc., which have a population of more than 15000, remain cut off from Kalka during rainy season as there was no bridge over the Sukhna nadi.

He said the causeways that were built about four years back had been washed away by heavy current of water. Residents of Tipra and its adjoining areas were dependent on this town for their needs as government offices, banks, post office, railway station, and bus stand etc. are all located at Kalka. “But during rainy season, these areas get cut off from Kalka and it puts the people residing in these villages to a lot of inconvenience,” he said.
